Spend Less Money and Still Have Pretty Nails

I love having beautiful nails and I’ve spent a lot of time and money on acrylic nails. I usually stick with the french tips because I think they look neat and they go with everything. The problem is I end up spending around $60 a month because I have to have a fill in every two weeks to keep them looking good.

I also don’t like sitting for an hour while they’re doing my nails. I can’t read, talk on the phone, answer emails, nothing. All I can do is sit there and think about all the things I could or should be doing.

Well, I still want my nails to look nice so I’ve found I can get a manicure every month or so for around $15 (much cheaper than acrylic nails). It also takes a lot less time! I can have a pretty nail color or clear nail color put on my nails and if I want to change my color after a few weeks, I have some pretty ones at home that I use.

Recently I found this new color by Sally Hansen called Commander in Chic. (I love the name, don’t you?)

The color is neutral and goes with anything you wear. If you wear black it has a gray tint, but if you wear brown, it looks brown. It’s a perfect color for the Fall/Winter season.

This is the quote on Sally Hansen’s website about this nail polish:

“Sally knows you’re busy. So skip the salon, but get the results. With patented Vita-Care Technology for advanced wear, more shine and nourishing care. Dare to compare to your favorite salon brand.”

This polish goes on easy and lasts for days and I’m hard on my nails.

If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer or pretty color to wear to all your holiday gatherings this is the color!

Beauty For The Heart~~  Some days I hear about so much tragedy that I can easily get a little depressed. On those days it’s important to make sure we’ve bathed ourselves in scripture. This verse reminds us to fix our eyes and our thoughts on good things. So, if you’re having one of those days this is a wonderful scripture to read. Sometimes I even write the scripture out and put it on my refrigerator or bathroom mirror.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”  Philippians 4:8 NLT

  1. Just discovered your site and enjoy the everyday-ness of it. 🙂 In my work pretty nails would be a plus. But the chipping works my nerves! I’m hoping that Insta-Dri on top of the Commander in Chic will change all that! Thanks for the tips. (no pun intended) 🙂

  2. Cherie, I read in a magazine several years ago that beauty editors almost always keep their nails short and either just buffed to a shine or with a light natural polish or bright red. That really made an impression on me and ever since I have quit trying to grow my nails long (though I used to be able to do it easily). I really should go get manicures but I never seem to find the time or the $$.

  3. I just started blogging a few months ago for my own enjoyment of writing. I love yours. I have a lot to learn about it. I love the nail color! I have been looking for a neutral for so long! My problem is polishing with my left hand. I spend a lot of time with “clean-ups”! Your blog is so good and from the heart, and I loved the tribute to your mother. It’s a winner!

  4. I’m headed out to get this color! Love it! I always, I mean ALWAYS, have my toes painted, no matter what:)! My fingernails, at least a clear coat or a natural color b/c the color feels harsh next to my fair skin, but I LOVE pretty nails! I am completely in love with your new fashion posts and really look forward to them! Very glad you decided to add this to your already great blog!!

  5. Lori I use a clear coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri clear nail color over my polish. I probably should have said that in my post. It makes then shine and I think it helps them not to chip.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Wow! You did have acrylic nails for a long time! I haven’t read Emilys book yet but it’s on my reading list. May not get to it until after Christmas.
    Have a great weedend!

  7. Love this! After nearly 15 years, I’ve started doing my own nails. I’ve worn acrylics for, well, 15 years! For me, it was a sort of an unmasking (following reading Grace for the Good Girl by Emily Freeman). My nails meant “perfection” for me. What a release it was to stop wearing them. As crazy as it sounds, losing the nails was a result of walking in greater freedom.

I’m still doing my own nails and loving it!!!

  8. I use to love to get acrylic nails. But I had to give that up a long time ago, due to finances, and also, they sort of interferred with my typing (even though I tried to keep them short). But I do love the way they look. My nails look aweful right now. I really should get a manicure!

  9. I love these posts, Cyndi! I used to have acrylics as well, but can no longer afford them. I have the worse nails as they constantly split and polish looks terrible. A woman at work told me to try nailtiques formula 2 plus and put a coat on every day. After a few days, remove the polish and begin again. My natural nails have never looked so nice, and they are actually getting long. This dries very quickly so it’s not a pain to do. The polish I have been using is mademoiselle by essie (which is a very light pale pink), but I’m looking forward to seeing if colors will last more than a day. I have a few if those Sally Hanson nail polishes and i like them and the brush as well. Have a blessed weekend! Linda

  10. I love painted nails too, but rarely have the time to sit and do them. I always lean toward the reds for some reason! I love so many colors on others, but then when it comes time to buy it for me, I chicken out! I’ll just have to dive in!

  11. Really enjoying the new lay out and the new forum. Learning a lot I didn’t know and the Beauty For The heart scripture passage at the end really puts things into perspective. Continued Success and many Blessings!!

  12. I just started doing my nails recently and I love how they look but they do get chipped and ugly looking after just a few days…I don’t want to spend money or time on acrylics either so I guess I will just have to keep doing them every few days. Any tips to keeping them looking better longer?
