Adding Color That Will Flatter Your Skin Tone

Yesterday we talked about some basic wardrobe essentials we need to have in our closet.

Today we’re going to add color by looking at our skin tones!

Years ago when my husband and I started dating he told me his favorite color was orange. Of course, I immediately went out and bought some clothes that were orange.

I kept noticing how bad I looked. My dark circles were even darker. I didn’t have any color in my face and I looked tired!

I finally realized that orange was not my color! If I’m going to wear orange, it can’t be anywhere near my face.

That’s why it’s important to know what colors look best on you.

With the right colors:

  • Your skin tone will have a glow
  • Your eyes will appear brighter
  • Your hair will reflect it’s natural highlights
  • You will hear compliments such as “That is your color, you look great!”

With the wrong colors:

  • Your skin tone will appear tired
  • Your eyes may appear shadowed, and you’ll see dark circles
  • You will hear comments – such as “You look tired today” “Are you feeling OK?”

First, determine your skin tone:

Winter complexions have blue or pink undertones. Skin can be pale white, yellowish-olive, or dark. Winter people are generally brunettes, with dark eye color.

Summer complexions have blue or pink undertones. Skin is pale and pink. Summers are often natural blondes or brunettes with pale eyes.

Autumn complexions have golden undertones. Many redheads and brunettes with golden brown eyes fall into this category.

Spring complexions have golden undertones and are usually creamy white or peach. Spring people generally have blonde or red hair, freckles, rosy cheeks, and blue or green eyes.

Now, choose clothes to flatter your skin tone:

Winters should wear colors that are sharp, stark and clear. White, black, navy blue, red and shocking pink all go well with winter complexions. For lighter colors, wear icy tones rather than pastels. Avoid subdued tones like beige, orange and gold

Summers should choose pastels and soft neutrals with rose and blue undertones. Lavender, plum, rose-brown and soft blue work well, while black and orange do not.

Autumns should select colors with golden undertones, like camel, beige, orange, gold and dark brown. Avoid colors with blue tones, like navy.

Springs can wear warm colors like camel, peach, golden yellow and golden brown. Avoid dark, dull colors.

So there you have it! Know which season you are and then buy colors that flatter your skin tone. This will make your shopping much easier!

Do you know which season your are? I’d love to hear!

  2. Hi Cyndi,

Came over from Traci’s blog. Great post and so right on! I’m a winter skin tone (yellow-olive to be exact) and have been really wanting a great beige wool coat but my husband always says,”No that color doesn’t do anything for you.” Can’t argue with him after reading this… I’m not going to tell him that he was right either. Lol

I’m your new Pineterest and blog follower. Have a blessed day!

  3. Hey Autumn
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll try to get a post together about hair removal. I know a lot of women have a problem with it. I usually have mine done at the salon but I’ve been wanting to try some over the counter.
    Have a great day!
    Cyndi

  4. ALTHOUGH MY NAME IS AUTUMN I’M PRETTY SURE I’M A WINTER AFTER READING THE DESCRIPTIONS! THANKS FOR THE TIPS CYNDI. ALSO, THIS MAYBE WEIRD BUT WITH VERY DARK ALMOST BLACK NATURAL HAIR COLOR MYSELF I WAS WONDERING IF YOU MIGHT HAVE ANY TIPS ON FACIAL HAIR REMOVAL?

    THANKS!

  5. I’m a summer! For years i thought I was a winter. Its amazing how much difference it made when I found out I was a summer and started wearing summer’s colors. Also, my daughter found a book in their church library where it takes it a step farther and breaks it down into 8 times of the day. It is very interesting. Turns out I am a “high noon”! The book is called Shades of Beauty. It’s an old book so I don’t know if anyone has heard of it. We had so much fun with it though. It also goes beyond color to even the style of clothes that’s right for you. Very interesting to say the least! I was wondering if you would do a post on this, Cyndi. I love this kind of thing!

  6. Love this post, Cyndi! I was wondering if you would consider making a post about blush…colors, techniques, etc. It’s the one area of make-up I just can’t seem to get right! Thanks 🙂
