Picking The Right Foundation For Your Face

Have you ever noticed how many foundations there are to choose from?

There’s liquid, powder, mousse, creams; medium coverage, full coverage,

sheer, and the list goes on!

How do you know what foundation is right for your face?

First, why should you even wear foundation? (Many women don’t and

never will, and that’s fine.)

  • But, foundation can be a barrier against pollution and toxins in the environment.
  • Foundation can even out your skin and can add color and radiance.
  • Many foundations can make you look younger and because many

contain sunscreen they protect you from the affects of sun on your face.

Let’s start today with mineral powder foundation and tinted moisturizers.

Mineral Powder Foundations

For me, mineral makeup is great for summer-time weather because I usually need less

coverage in the summer. Mineral foundations can enhance your skin’s own radiance.

I personally use Mary Kay mineral powder foundation.

Mineral powder foundations have very few ingredients so it’s great for people

with allergies or sensitive skin.

Mineral makeup is a favorite for mature skin (ahem) because it is lightweight while

providing ample coverage. Mineral foundations give you a “soft” look, and has been

compared to the airbrush in creating a flawless appearance.

If you have dry skin, make sure you use a good moisturizer before using mineral

foundation and I love to use a foundation primer too.

To apply mineral foundation use a big, natural bristle kabuki brush.

Tinted Moisturizers

If you don’t need a  lot of coverage or don’t like the feel of foundation on your face

but do want something to even out your skin tone and relieve dry skin,

tinted moisturizers may provide you with just what you need.

Tinted moisturizer is a one-step process because it’s a moisturizer and foundation in one.

It softens and protects the skin while adding a hint of foundation color.

It will even out imperfections and fade the appearance of fine lines.

I have tried JOUER luminizing moisture tint and like it on days when I want

to wear very little makeup.

If you have a lot of blemishes such as age spots, acne, etc., tinted moistuizers may not be

enough coverage for you.

Lastly, if you are having pictures made I would not wear either of these foundations due to

their light-diffusing attributes. Most of the time we need more coverage in photographs.

  • Tuesday~liquid foundations.
  • Thursday~creme to powder foundations.
  • Friday~whipped or mouse foundations.

What type of foundation do you wear? Anything you want me to cover about foundations?

Have a great Monday!

  1. Hi Cyndi,

Do you know of any foundation that is non comedogenic to prevent acne? One of the issues I face is that I have a tendency to break out when applying makeup and leaving it for any length of time!

I know Mary Kay has an acne fighting kit but haven’t seen any makeup for acne prone skin. I may be wrong though.

  2. I am currently using Revision Intellishade tinted moisturizer with sunscreen. The tint of the this adjusts to everyone’s facial color and it is natural to your own skintone. It is like wow I didn’t know tinted moisturizer could work so well! The derm’s office put the matte on me & my friend when we finished facials & we loved it. It is alittle pricey but we were impressed . 🙂 It is a 3 in one product.

  3. Enjoy reading your posts about your make-up finds. I just bought Boots no. 7 Refining and lifting foundation and love it. Goes on lightly, but good coverage for my 60 + skin. I agree with you…like primer and always use moisturizer with sunblock.

  4. Very interesting. I never wear foundation, so if I need it (like for a formal event or photo session) I don’t know what to do. Thanks! Lisa~

  5. Do you have any tips for picking out foundation colors? I have a hard time knowing if the color I”m using totally matches ok. I like to just buy it online though, so that adds to my problem. 🙂 Also, what foundation do you suggest using if you have acne?
