{Day 23} Shapewear & Bras: Fashion & Beauty for Women Over 40

I’ve been trying to avoid this topic like the plague! I get a little squirmy when I have to talk about the undergarments we wear. This is a blog for women so I’m assuming that only women are reading but it’s still hard to talk about shapewear and bras.

For women our age and women who have areas they want to hide shapewear is a must! And I’m not talking about our grandmother and mothers’ girdles. If you have a girdle throw it away!

Shapewear has come a long way! It’s more comfortable and works better than ever!

Many of you have asked about how to hide back fat, muffin tops, love handles etc. This is your answer!

Identify the area that bothers you and buy shapewear that will hide those areas.

Charla Krupp from How Not to Look Old says, “Shapewear is the hardest working pieces in our wardrobe. They lift! they smooth! They mold! They shape! They minimize! They hide ten pounds! You’d be surprised how shapewear can open up new wardrobe possibilities.”

The new shapewear is comfortable enough to wear all day and night. So invest in good shapewear such as Spanx, Maidenform, Lipo in a Box to name a few.

Now for Bras: When was the last time you were fitted for a bra? Most of us are wearing bras that are either too tight or too loose.  The best thing we can do is let a professional bra fitter measure us and find our correct bra size.

When picking out a bra we need the right cup size, the right band, and the right straps. The most popular bra color is white but we really only need two colors: nude and black. White bras can be seen under a white t-shirt. Buy nude!

If you’re like me, I want to spend the least amount of money on shapewear and bras because no one sees them (except my husband) but we’re at the age that we need to invest in good shapewear and bras.

The best place to start is to clean out your lingerie drawer. Keep the good items and throw the rest away. Mine drawer is full of bras and shapewear that I never wear. So guess where I’m headed?

Do you wear shapewear? How long has it been since you bought a new bra?

Beauty For the Heart~~1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us that our bodies should honor God.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Oparh said one time that a good bra is worth its weight in gold. I believe that. Everyone needs to go get fitted and buy a good bra that fits, no matter what size it is. No one will know the size except you unless you tell someone.

  2. I need new of both! But the pics they show always crack me up because the women they show, in my opinion, do not need shapeware!

  3. You know you aren’t in your 20’s anymore when the sales lady helping you suggests Spanx to help get that “perfect” look in the dress you are trying on…

  4. Cyndi, I can’t believe our 31 days of Fashion and Beauty are almost OVER!!! I’ve enjoyed it so much, you have offered so much great information. You might have to do another 31 days like this sometime in the future. Easy for me to say, I know. You’re better than any fashion magazine out there. Be so blessed!

  5. Even though I’m 5’2 1/2 (that extra 1/2 inch is important!) and about 105-107 lbs. I still have the little poochy lower tummy problem. I have a pair of Spanx which I love that takes care of the pooch when I wear clothes that show it. I’m emarassed to admit the last time I bought a new bra because I don’t know know when it was! I went for a professional fit at Nordstrom’s and all they offered were $40+ dollar bras. I just can’t believe that cost is necessary for a decent bra.

  6. You’re too funny feeling embarrassed about lingerie! I imported a high-end line of French lingerie (that means bras and panties) and swimwear geared toward the hard-to-fit and full-figured woman for years, so it’s like talking about baking a pie for me! This is the most important piece of your wardrobe, ..truly the FOUNDATION of your look and various outfits need different bras. Do not skimp on this item. Get fewer, but better quality and definitely have the professional fitting. Hardly anyone wears the proper size and that’s the primary reason for flesh bulging out in the upper back and sides.
This doesn’t mean expensive, although the French do it best if you’re a smaller cup size. They like “full-frontal projection” and this can look matronly in a larger cup size with a shorter waist. However, the wider “wing-span” of a well-sized minimizer will take at least 10 lbs off and make everything fit better. I love lilyette and wish they made their new wireless styles in my size:(. Go to TJMAXX if you already know what works.
I do not like the padded bras that give a big bulbous look; can we say dumpy? I don’t yet wear shapewear, but I recently bought some panties that have a silicone type strip along the back edge so no riding up or lines. Brilliant. I could go on forever. Great advice, Cyndi.
