Over 40 Beauty Tips-Hair

One of the things we talk about a lot around here is hair. I’m certainly not an expert! But I have noticed a few things about aging (ahem) and the importance of softening our appearance.

I’ve recently noticed a high profile person, who I feel needs a softer look. Let me begin by saying I don’t want to be mean spirited at all. She is busy, works incredibly hard and I’m not in her shoes. I’m guessing it’s out of convenience that she has let her hair grow. When you’re traveling the world as Secretary of State, I’m sure fashion is not the first thing on your mind.

Mrs. Clinton is a beautiful lady with a beautiful smile but her long hair doesn’t seem to be her best look.

With that being said, I think Mrs. Clinton looks much older with her long hair and no bang look.

Mrs. Clinton has great hair but by cutting a few inches off and adding bangs she would have a much softer look. It would also lift her face and remember as we age we want everything lifted up!

My guess is when her life slows down, she will cut her hair. I could definitely see her with this look–I wish my hair looked like this!

So today, just a reminder that as we age it’s better to cut a few inches off and add bangs for a softer look.

Have you noticed your hair changing as you age? Have you had to cut a few inches off or add bangs?

I would love for you to follow me on facebook here! Check out my Pinterest boards here.

Have a blessed day!

  1. I’m 55 and have had my hair, which is fine, about chin length for several years–a good look for me, I think. But now I’m dating someone very seriously and he reeeally likes long hair. Of course he knows it’s my hair and I can do what I want, but do you have advice for how I can wear it long without aging myself? Thanks!

  2. Richella you have gorgeous hair!! and I don’t think every woman over 40 needs short hair sometimes that can make you look old.
I think softening can sometimes just be by adding a few layers around your face. You don’t have to have bangs and if you look good without them, I say go for it because they are more trouble.
You look beautiful the way you are!
    Love ya,
    Cyndi

  3. have I noticed my hair changing? Yes, it seems to be getting grey quicker! lol. It seems when I was younger and went to the salon to dye my hair, i could go for at least 12 weeks or more between dyes. Now its every 8-9 weeks! As for bangs, I would love to have my bangs a little longer and swept to the side as shown in the pic, but alas, the hair getting into my eyes would start to bug me 🙁 so for now, I have shorter bangs. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Every time I see the Secretary of State on television, I say “Where is her hair stylist?” or “Where is her best friend to tell her this style is NOT good for you?” My husband tells me to get off her case, that she’s traveling from country to country and doesn’t have time to worry about her hair. I disagree. We all have time to worry about our hair and in her case, I feel sure there’s a make-up artist and hair stylist. But I do like Mrs. Clinton. I just think she needs a new hairstyle. I love your blog.

  5. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but just because someone has short hair doesn’t mean it looks good. There are a ton of women walking around with awful short hair. As for Hilary : whatever floats your boat!

  6. I had a really bad hair–decade in the 90’s when my kids were young. I used to sing the song “I’ve got Jane Pauley bangs” to the tune of Betty Davis eyes! But this past year I had a new hairstylist give me a different cut. She cut SIDE SWEPT BANGS and for the first time in my life I have a ‘good bangs look.’ I even have bad bangs pix from when I was a year old. I too have a short forehead and front cowlick. But these rock! I think the key is having them to the side on both sides! I have stubbornly straight hair that is really thick, so she thinned it out and now I blow it dry, put goop in it and put in hot curlers while I do makeup. Then just run my fingers through it upside down after curlers out. For me that is much faster and easier than the irons (I have fibromyalgia, and get shoulder aches)

  7. I am what my Grammy would call “scaring 40,” as I am just a couple years shy of the big 4-0. Thanks so much for your great advice. I live on a college campus and sometimes teeter too far toward the fashion of those with whom I live. When I pick up a little tip here or there from you it always results in a compliment from someone or just confidence in my fashion decision. Thank you for what you do!

  8. LOL! I so agree. I feel sorry for her for all the stress she endures even though I don’t agree with a lot of things she does. Her hair is definitely aging her, though. Thanks for the tip!

  9. Hi Cyndi.

I, too, think Hillary is attractive and would look more youthful with a different haircut. Maybe she just isn’t sure what she wants to do or maybe she’s just letting it grow longer until a specified time that she has in mind. I have shoulder length hair, and want to cut it super short; however, there is a fine line with going short over 40. If you get the wrong cut, you look like you’ve got that “old mom” look that I see so many women wearing for years and years and years. Your hair is beautiful, as is the picture of the cut you suggested for Hillary. I would like that cut, but my hair is not thick enough. I have very fine hair.

Keep up the good work. We love the tips.

  10. I have friends that leave their hair long just so they can still put it in a ponytail.
It isn’t becoming on them because they are in their 50’s like me. I feel we grew out of this hairstyle long, long ago. Hillary is probably thinking “I’m busy, I’m tired, let me just do the easiest hairstyle possible.” Having a cute hairstyle is probably the last thing on her mind. I think she should just cut it and go back with the headbands if that suited her ☺

  11. Hi ya Cyndi, I think Hillary Clinton would look 10 years younger in the shorter, layered cut you pictured, it’s darling. I think it would also be a great cut to help her hair look better when she definitely needs to have a color. When she wears her hair severely pulled back, she reminds me of an old school marm; worn down, her hair is overwhelming just makes her look tired. I agree, she must be on the edge of true exhaustion all of the time and her hair is probably the last thing on her mind. But, her appearance is very important to her credibility and in her job, credibility is everything.
As to your other question, YES, YES, YES since I got my assymetrical bangs last year, I think (mine, not other’s opinion) everything about my face looks softer.

  12. I had bangs my entire life, until I decided to grow them out last year, just for the heck of it. I kept thinking that once they got long enough (past the awkward stage) that I would look better. Never happened. I couldn’t really figure out exactly what was wrong, until I read your post about wrinkly faces needing softer hair. Bingo! I went straight to my stylist and got my bangs back, and couldn’t be happier. I’ve received tons of compliments since then. Now that I finally realize WHY long hair looked bad on me, I don’t have to even THINK about doing that again. Bangs forever for me now.

  13. I agree about the softer look needed for Hillary. She is busy but at the same time I think she has always struggled with finding a good look for herself just based to what I have seen over the years.

  14. I also agree that she needs a few inches off the hair. I love your bangs! I wish I could wear bangs since I have a high forehead and my hairline starts back farther on my head. However, I have a very weird cowlick right in front and bangs don’t work with it.

  15. I totally agree Cyndi! I read that Chelsea wanted Hilary to grow her hair longer for her wedding but she should have stopped a long time ago! I think with the right hairstyle she would look at least 10 yrs younger. I’m 54 and I cut my hair over a year ago (from shoulder length) to a style similar to yours, maybe a bit shorter than yours in the back. I had several people tell me that I looked younger with this style. I know I hated to give up the longer hair, felt a bit like I was giving up some of my youth but now I’m glad I did it! Some women my age look good with longer hair but most of them do have layers in their hair to lighten it up a bit.

  16. I don’t think the last look is that much maintenance IF the cut is good. A few wisps are sometime all it takes as bangs come in many varieties. Layers on the side also help to soften things and let the hair be a bit longer in the back. It’s the straight parted hair hanging limp that really weighs down the entire face. Few can pull that off even when young.
People always used to make fun of Hillary’s bangs and headbands, but I thought they looked really cute. It’s hard to make time for oneself with a demanding job. She looked great at Chelsea’s wedding and has a really nice complexion so it wouldn’t take much.
I’ve had some sort of bang almost my entire adult life. I too, have a lower forehead so I keep them light. I feel I look like an entirely different person with out them! CTD

  17. I have seen lots of women lately, well over 40, wearing their hair 6 to 7 inches (at least) past their shoulders. No bangs, either. Not sure if this is a current trend in California, or what. And suprisingly, they look really good. So, sometimes I think it depends on how your face looks after 40. Don’t mean to sound nasty or anything, but some women do age more than others by a certain age.

  18. I’m certain that Mrs. Clinton has been far too busy as Secretary of State to give much thought to her appearance. When life settles down for her, I imagine that she will do something different with her hair.

The photo you include at the end looks pretty, but it also looks much too high-maintenance and “fiddly” for most of us. I know I’d never be able to tolerate that much hair in my face! Any suggestions for getting that kind of a look without needing to spend inordinate amounts of time on one’s hair?

Also, I have another question for you. I understand that bangs work for many women and are particularly good for hiding forehead wrinkles. Bangs are NOT a good option for me, though–my hairline is very low, and wearing bangs shortens and widens my face considerably. (I had bangs for many years, and when a stylist finally brushed them aside and created a bangless look for me, it made a huge difference in my appearance!) So do you have suggestions for softening one’s look that doesn’t include bangs?

    Thanks, Cyndi!

  19. I totally agree and your kind words about her are sweet. Every time she’s on the news, I say out loud, “Surely she has someone telling her how to dress and fix her hair!”

Surely not. She’s not an ugly person. She just needs softening.

  20. I absolutely agree! I saw her the other day and was thinking about how she has the same hair now as she had in the 60s when she was in college. While many mocked her having stylists during her husband’s presidential campaign and years in office, she did look great!

  21. I agree! She totally needs to cut her hair!! I think the style you suggested for her would looks great. The cut & style she had when her husband was in office suited her much better than her current cut/style.

  22. I saw a clip of Secretary Clinton on the news last night, and I said the same thing to my husband! Oddly, he didn’t share my interest in her look 😉
