Skin Care Tips (For Women Over 40)

Skin Care Tips (For Women Over 40)
You can hardly look at any fashion magazine these days without seeing topics on skin care. They tell us what to use, how to look years younger, how to stop aging, etc.

Fact: We are all aging if we are living. But there are things we can do to have beautiful skin at any age.

Here are some of the causes of premature aging:

  • Sun
  • Pollution
  • Stress
  • Smoke
  • Processed Foods
  • Free Radicals

It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin!

Here are five of my skin care tips.

1. Drink lots of water-I know, how many times do we have to hear this, but it’s true. Hydration is key in keeping your skin looking its best.

2. Don’t sleep in your makeup-Sleep helps to restore our bodies so it’s important to go to bed with clean, moisturized skin. While you are sleeping, the body’s hydration rebalances. Skin is able to recover moisture.

3. Moisturize-Make sure you moisturize not only your face, but your neck and decolletage.

My favorite beauty tip! Keep the area under your eye moisturized with a good eye cream. If the area under your eye is dry, your fine lines will show up even more. If you’re looking tired at the end of the day, apply some eye cream under your eye and then re-apply your concealer. You look refreshed!

4. Use products that are good for your skin-This one has been a learning process for me. For years, I had no idea that most of the products I was using were actually bad for my skin.

There are no regulations on what goes into beauty products and many of the things they put in them are doing more damage than good. Ugh!

A great way to check if what you are using is safe is download the app called Think Dirty. You can check your makeup, hair products, lotions etc.

I’m shocked at some of the products I use or have used that don’t have a good rating. I’m working on finding safer products.

5. Keep your face and neck out of the sun! I use to lay out for hours and tan my face and neck. To be honest, I’m paying for that now. To keep your skin looking it’s best use your sunscreen and stay away from tanning beds.

Let’s help each other out, what are some things you are doing to keep your skin looking its best?

  1. Hi Cyndi – I have been following your blog for a while (my Mom shared it me) and I love your posts. But, on this one, I will disagree. Think Dirty is a great idea, but it does not give users access to accurate information and true comparisons because of the current scoring methodology, the lack of context about company policies, and the fact that brands that fully disclose ingredients are compared with some companies that are not disclosing all of their ingredients. A better app to use is Skin Deep from the Environmental Working Group. EWG is a non-profit non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.

  2. i am obsessed with the Think Dirty ap! Thank you for the tip. I have always been very conscious of the earth friendliness of products that I use to clean my home. Most I make myself and the items used for this scored very well. However my face and hair products did not! I will be making some changes.

  3. I downloaded the Think Dirty app this evening and started scanning the items in our bathroom to see how they rate. I was disappointed that so many of the products we use are not in the database. Has anyone else run into the same issue?
Cyndi thanks for all your helpful beauty tips. And your Beauty for the Heart.

  4. Hey Cyndi – I was wondering if you have ever heard or used Nerium anti-aging face cream. I have heard great reviews and success with this product. Blessings!! 🙂

  5. Ugh! I downloaded the app and so far everything I’ve tried has gown an 8, 9 or 10. I thought the old standbys like Neutogena, Cerave and Cetaphil would come out ok. Do you know if they have recommended products that are safer?

  6. I have a lot of decolletage wrinkles from sleeping on my side. I have been using those silic skin silicone pads at night. They actually work. In the morning my chest wrinkles are all smoothed out!

  7. I love your tips and as I read, was nodding my head up and down at the things I already do. LOL
I love to sit in the sun, but with a cap to hide my face and no lotions accept for a spray bottle of water…. My face tans naturally while working in my gardens. My daughter says that I don’t even have to sit out, that “at my age” she says, “you tan too fast.” LOL at my age, well…..
But as I read the comments I guess there are a lot of women who use face creams, soaps and rinses. I don’t use anything on my face but water, and on days I use facial make up, I do use Oil of OLay to wash it off. I have never used anything other then that one my face. I let food and water tell my age. I drink only water and keep my skin well hydrated and I try to eat at least 50% raw food daily. and always sleep till I naturally wake up, never with an alarm in my ear, and each morning I look at the time to see that I got 7-8 hrs sleep. When I eat more raw food I can get 6-7 hrs. sleep and be regenerated for the next day just like I had 8 hrs. and living here in the Mt.s the air is cleaner and I love to take long walks or hikes, and breath deep! 🙂 Okay, I think that is about my story on my aging process. I stay way from lotions, creams and rinses, and get sun, air, water, and fresh raw food ! 🙂

  8. Hi Cindi!
My question is about the self tanner you use. Did it score in the safe category? I’m eager to find one to use as I am as white as a ghost,

    1. Not good!!! I knew it wouldn’t score well. I’m on the lookout for a better self tanner! I’l share as soon as I find one.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  9. I wish this were open to non-facebook people. Perhaps you can blog about the conversation. I’m pretty happy with my ever changing routine, but there’s always room for improvement. I find as I age I use more products in more places; first under my eyes, then my upper lip, neck, chest then hands, forehead and now it’s my earlobes, for goodness sakes! Oh well.

  10. I need alot of help in this area. I’ve always been VERY simple in my skincare routine, only to have my skin looking pretty bad right now. Ugh. In fact, I’m hoping to get to the dermatologist soon. Looking forward to the Facebook event. Thanks for all you do!

  11. Thx for this post Cyndi. I tried the app you suggested. My makeup was on the low side, scoring a 3. However, the Loreal sulfate free shampoo & conditioner scored a 9!! Yikes!! My Neutrogena eye makeup remover wipes scored a 7! Also not good! back to the drawing board I guess. Please share what you use when you can. Much appreciated!! 😉

    1. Lisa I could not believe the Loreal shampoo and conditioner. I about freaked out!!! I will let you know what I find to replace that. Ugh!!
      blessings,
      Cyndi

      1. Hi Ladies,
I have started using hair care products from The Honest Company and am very happy with them. My daughter’s hair is always very tangled and she wants it long. The detangling spray is amazing – no more tears when brushing her hair! Co-founded by Jessica Alba they have a wide range of products from diapers to cleaning supplies. Check them out http://www.honest.com

      1. Dee, I use Bare Minerals makeup. Everything I have scored a 3 or a 2. I’ve been using their products for years. Very happy with them. Foundation comes in either a pressed powder or loose powder. Whichever you prefer. Hope this helps 😉

  12. I think most of our skin condition comes from our genetics. I am blessed to come from a family of women with great skin 🙂 I also use a line of natural skin products, Concept Now, which I have used since my 30’s changing the products as I aged. I think it’s more than our skin that ages us, we can appear older than we are by how we dress and also our attitude. If I think I’m old then I will be old! I like what you said at the beginning of this post Cyndi, if we are living we are aging! We live in a time where people are striving so much to appear younger but I think there is no one more beautiful than the woman who ages gracefully – more to do with inner beauty than outer.

  13. I would love to learn about good products for sun spots. Luckily at 58 1/2, I only have 3 but so far nothing seems to lighten them.

    1. I have found nothing that works on sun spots either. If anyone has tried something that works, please do tell!

  14. Cyndi,

I’m 32 years old but am trying to be religious in terms of using preventative skincare. You are right about SPF – it’s so important. I remember reading somewhere once that if, when we were born, we were kept in a bubble away from sun and air pollutants, our skin would stay baby soft. Isn’t that crazy?!

Another thing I swear by is a serum. I’m currently using the rest of my bottle of philosophy’s “when hope is not enough,” but I’ve read great things about the Boots line of skincare that Target carries. I think I’m going to try one of their serums when my runs out.

Great post today! Have a great Monday!

  15. Hi Cyndi.

I, too, am paying for the years and years of southern fun…tanning! My face doesn’t look as bad as my arms and legs. I have been struggling with very loose, sagging skin on my legs and arms for a couple of years now. No matter how much muscle I build, it is hidden under this ugly, loose skin. Do you know of any body products that target this? I do eat a clean diet, drink lots of water, exercise 5-6 days a week and avoid the sun now. Maybe I should have listened all those years ago when people told me I was going to look old from the years of sun tanning. I will be joining your group to see how essential oils can help. Thanks for addressing this for all of us. You look beautiful, as always.

    1. Gina, I definitely understand!! I spent too many years in the sun. I’m really surprised as much as you exercise that it hasn’t toned more. Very frustrating!!
I’ve tried lotions that say they help with toning but I’ve never seen any difference.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  16. Im 41 years old. About six months ago, I looked in the mirror and was shocked by the amount of small (and not so small) wrinkles, sun marks, age spots etc on my face. My seemed my face had lost all its color and zest. I turned to the pharmasict in at my local health store because I had heard she makes wonderful skin products.
She had a good look at my skin and came back a few minutes later with a routine. All the products are made by her and not only did she explain how and why the product should be used, she also took responsibilty for the outcome. I liked that.
Now, my skin looks much better, younger, cleaner, and healthier. I get complimented ALL the time.
My routine is as such: In the morning a put on a light Vitamin C cream , then White Tea toning eye gel (love this miracle worker) then a concentrated vitamin E moisterizer, then 50 SPF sun block, then my makeup…(it takes less that two minutes).
In the evening, after Ive taken off all the makeup, I put on the eye gel, a soft peeling\lightening\correcting cream, the vitamin E moisterizing cream, and take an Emperor Pearl vitamin pill (also two minutes), and Im done.
Im so happy with the results, and its all natural 🙂

      1. Hi Amy,
These are creams she makes herself and sells only in her store.
Im sure you can find something similar in your area.
The only commercial products are the Emperor Pearl vitamins ( I use Nutri Care)and the White Tea toning eye gel (I use Neals Yard Remedies).
It is expensive? All together, Yes. But as I see it, its cheaper than a face lift and more natural…. 🙂
Good luck with finding your products.

  17. I went for a facial for the first time last year. She told me something I didn’t know. She said to use a moisturizer with sunscreen every day but when you are actually going to the beach or pool always use a sun block .
