26 Days of Summer Fashion (Day 19)

Welcome to Day 19 of my 26 Days of Summer Fashion! Today we are going to talk summer dresses for a wedding.

26 Days of Summer Fashion (Day 19)
I get emails that start like this all the time, “I’m going to a wedding and I was wondering what to wear?” They’re usually asking for a specific type of wedding such as a formal wedding, casual, or beach wedding.

So let’s talk about what to wear to a wedding. First, my motto is, “It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed.”

Most weddings that I get invited to are semiformal or casual. If you get invited to a white tie wedding then a formal floor length gown is the way to go. If it’s a black tie wedding then a floor length or dressy cocktail dress is appropriate.

For semiformal weddings, I wear a dress with a dressy heel. This hot pink dress from JCPenney is a great dress for semiformal events.

I also love this simple blue dress with a floral heel.

If the wedding is a casual summer wedding, I will wear a casual sundress with sandals or a wedge heel.  This INC dress is so soft, it feels like I’m wearing pajamas.

This Jude Connally dress would also be great for a causal summer wedding.

I haven’t been to a beach wedding but a sundress with sandals would be the perfect outfit for a beach wedding. A maxi dress would be cute too.

If you’re looking for a dress for a summer wedding, the most flattering dress on all body types, is a wrap or faux wrap dress.

Do you have any weddings to attend this summer?

Beauty for the Heart~~Following God is not like driving on a scenic highway with one majestic experience after another. The pathway of discipleship is often downward before it is upward, emptying before it is filling. -Charles Stanley

I have found that being a christian does not mean that life will be easy, quite the contrary. Life is full of ups and downs but knowing that He is with me, makes all the difference!

Have a blessed day!

  1. I would agree that you can almost wear a different sun dress for any activity that you do during the summer! A huge benefit to wearing summer dresses is they make summer clothing more exciting with their floral and colorful different patterns. The photos you have a great in displaying how fun summer dresses can be for any occasion. Thank you for going into detail about the different dresses you can wear for different occasions!

  2. Michelle, I agree that with the bridesmaids wearing neutrals, you and the MOTG can wear almost any color with no fear of clashing with the bridal party. So, choose a color you like and look good in and that will be comfortable. And share your choice with MOTG so she can chose her outfit. And the shoes sinking into the ground is a real thing so keep that in mind when selecting shoes.

  3. I love the dresses and have one that looks like the blue dress. Wore it to a wedding.
But I wanted to put a reminder in here to wear a wedge or chunky heel for an informal wedding. Any chance that you would be walking on grass, for the service or photos, you don’t want to sink down or make divot.
My youngest daughter ruined dyed shoes by getting them wet from dew.

  4. it is nice to have some items already in the wardrobe that one can draw from rather than making a frantic search for the dress when one receives the invitation. your hints should provide our being prepared and consequently we will be able to put our emphasis on the couple and their celebration. Thank you again.
Have you ever been surprised by the amount of trekking thru lawn or sand and had the absolutely worst shoes ??any good back up suggestions ??
thanks for the reminder that being a Christian is not a smooth slide through life but a Savior by our side.

    1. I love your points, Brenda – particularly the one regarding being able to put your emphasis on the couple and their celebration! I was the Mother of the Bride 3 summers ago, and I can honestly say that I don’t remember the outfits that any of our guests wore. I just appreciated their presence at such a special event in our family! Be prepared and appropriate, as Brenda said, and then go with confidence to encourage the couple and their families! 🙂

    2. My daughter was married this past Saturday and I only r ember a couple of outfits but really don’t remember what most people wore. I do remember their smiling faces though.

  5. Love dresses in the summer they are so comfortable. I have a wedding this summer & it’s my oldest daughters. It is casual ,outside & the only person in formal attire is the bride. As the MOTB what on earth do I wear? Her gown is Ivory strapless & the colors are neutrals mostly in the beige family. Any suggestions friends?

    1. Michelle, Congratulations on your daughter getting married. I think you have the easiest job because the MOB is one person who can wear exactly what she wants! First, I would go shopping with your daughter and see what she has in mind for you. If that’s not possible, I’d just go and find a dress that makes you feel special (just don’t clash with the bridesmaids). I would do it relatively early so you can then tell the MOG of your intentions and give her plenty of time to shop.

    2. As MOTB I would wear a knee length sleeveless dress in a soft pastel shade of green, pink, blue or lilac to compliment all the bride’s neutrals. I would wear a solid or very soft floral. Too much pattern and too bright or bold of color will overpower your daughter’s gown in the pictures. A neutral heel or a heel in the same color as your dress would be appropriate. Keep your jewelry classy but simple. A dressy but soft drapey shawl or shrug if you need a little something should it turn chilly As MOTB your dress can and should be just a bit dressier than the average attendee but not formal. And since your daughter’s colors are neutrals the MOTG should steer away from beige as many think she’s to do, which is a myth. The MOTG should wear a subtle color and style that will not overpower the bride or your dress so you all look fantastic in the pictures. And I’ve heard the Mother’s should never show more skin than the bride.

    3. first congrats as MOTB…it’s a daunting task searching a dress for yourself. With the bride’s gown and bridesmaid color determined you now choose a color to compliment them. However find a dress you feel good in, keeping in mind you’ll be wearing 2-4 hours; don’t choose something you’ll be uncomfortable wearing, i.e. too low cut, or strapless if that’s not the styling you’d choose for an everyday outfit. JCrew has some beautiful choices – (https://www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Bridesmaid.jsp). The Clara dress in silk chiffon is beautiful with several color options. In this dress, I think the following color options would compliment the ivory and neutrals: dusty thistle, misty rose, bright coral, bright seaside, dark bluegrass, dusty shale, and dark cove. There are several other options of dress styles and fabric choices. It’s a place to begin the search…and really your color choices are limitless with the neutral dressing of the bride/bridal party. Once you’ve chosen your dress it’s appropriate to share color choice/styling with the MOTG. If you don’t want something that resembles a bridesmaid dress, then search the major department stores for what I will call an “Easter dress” – something a little dressier than an ordinary dress you’d wear to church. You could search for a pretty floral or a solid color. I like the brand Alex Marie found at Dillard’s. Don’t limit your options, but do research online to narrow down what you like/dislike…it’ll be like the bride choosing her dress, when you try it on you’ll know it’s the one!!! Good luck and congrats to all

  6. Cyndi. I absolutely love the quote from Charles Stanley . Thank you for posting how to dress for a wedding! Cathy

  7. I really like all of the dresses! We have not been invited to any summer weddings. I have brushed off JCPenney for the past several years because of the brand & style changes made at the store near us. But, you sharing some clothing you wear from there has me rethinking my decision. I am going to at least look on-line. Thank you! Have a blessed day!

  8. I love all your looks! I definitely consider the venue when dressing for a wedding. Heels are a “no” if it’s outdoors, as I tend to get them stuck in the grass. And I always bring some sort of “wrap”…for the a/c.
