Healthy Living For Women Over 40

One of the emails I get in my inbox quite often is, what are you doing to stay healthy? Do you exercise? What do you eat? and so on. So I thought I would start a weekly series on Healthy Living For Women Over 40.

Healthy Living For Women Over 40
Obviously, I am not a doctor and I’m not pretending to be. I do talk to my doctor about what I should be doing and I read a lot of information on staying fit and healthy past 40.

So let’s dive it to some recent information I read about balancing our body! Hang with me, we’re going to talk PH balance.

Have you been feeling sluggish lately? Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you wrestle with fatigue or depression? When you look in the mirror, do you feel you look older than your age? Do your muscles cramp or ache?

Believe it or not, some of this could  have to do with the PH balance in your body. Our bodies were designed to maintain somewhere close to a 7.4 ph balance between acidic and alkaline states.

If we vary too much from that number, a lot of problems can occur! The American diet tends to lean heavily towards acidic food.

Foods that are high in acidity include:

  • All meat and fish
  • Grains
  • Processed foods
  • Sweets
  • Alcohol
  • Soft drinks
  • Coffee

Yikes! Many of us are consuming way too much of the above list and they can cause weight gain, depression, lower back pain, digestive issues, and aging skin.

Overacidity has even been linked to the formation of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

To keep our body balanced our diet needs to consist of 60 percent alkaline-forming foods and 40 percent acid-forming foods.

One food that is extremely alkaline forming in the body is the lemon. Which seems weird because it is chemically acidic.

Adding lemon to your water is highly beneficial. It helps cleanse your digestive system, ignite your metabolism and neutralize excess acids.

I use a drop of Lemon Essential Oil. I carry an extra bottle in my purse and when I order water at a restaurant, I drop it in my water.

Other alkaline foods include:

  • Practically all vegetables
  • Practically all fruits, except blueberries, plums, prunes, and cranberries
  • Grains such as flax, millet, quinoa, and amaranth
  • Fresh unsalted butter
  • Milk, cream, and goat’s milk
  • Eggs
  • Plain yogurt

Call to action: Let’s make sure our bodies ph balance is where it needs to be. This week try to drink more water with lemon and cut back on at least one acidic food and drink. We can do this!!!

Beauty For the Heart~~While I want to take care of the body God has given me, I don’t want it to become my only focus. 1 Timothy 4:8 says, For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Let’s strive for godliness! Have a blessed day!

  1. So glad you are going to be posting on this issue. I’m hitting the big “50” this year and don’t feel very good at all. I like that you started with something small and doable. Thanks for being such a force for good.

  2. I would love for you and your subscribers to post their favorite websites for health, recipes and tips such as today’s post. There is so much information out that it is over-whelming. I’m not interested in fads. Just clean healthy, family friendly ideas. I think that is my biggest struggle: family friendly recipes that are healthy and that my family will eat. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas. I am over 50 and I think going through menopause and I have so much trouble loosing weight. Looking forward to these posts!

  3. I love this post also!!! You may check with a local health food shop or herb shop for the test strips. My local shop gave me a few strips….it is a simple urine test similar to pregnancy tests.

  4. Hi Cyndi,
PS. forgot to mention we also are incorporating the Alkaline/Acid way of eating into our daily diet. It works!!!! 🙂

  5. HI Cyndi,
I love this issue today… It is right up my alley!! My hubby is also starting his more healthy eating and yesterday I noticed him dropping a fresh slice of lemon in his glass of distilled water. Thank you for the tip on the Lemon Essential Oil. I will hunt for it today. I have been meat free now for 5 weeks and started dairy free last week, losing 3 lbs in that week. We do drink milk… but nut milks only… Almond and Coconut. I make my own milk occasionally with the almonds. It’s fun and way more healthy then cows milk. and now our grains are Gluten free and whole grain. “Baby steps to a healthier body” is my motto!
You are gorgeous and a great inspiration to eat clean !

  6. Thanks for adding this topic to your blog. Great idea to tackle one thing at a time. Over a year ago I changed my diet because of bad numbers from a check up. Great news. After this years check up my numbers have come down. Just recently my husband and I have started riding bikes. I expect numbers to be even better next year. But my point I don’t think I could have changed my diet and started excercise at the same time. Small changes along the way ends up being a total life style change before you know it.

  7. I do not sell any products, but on the subject of healthy PH balances I would suggest Plexus. They promote healthy PH balances with certain products. It is so important.

  8. Great topic! I look forward to more on health & exercise. I love lemon in my water & have trying to use it daily this summer. I use lemon essential oil in my water also. Thanks for all you do! 🙂

  9. Thanks for this post Cyndi. This is a fantastic addition to your blog and I look forward to more tips. I drink a cup of warm water with lemon squeezed into it in the winter first thing in the morning in the winter or during the day when I’m cold and don’t want to drink a regular glass of winter. I’ve never really noticed a difference but I’m going to try it in my water this summer and see if there is a difference. Is there a reason you use lemon essential oil instead of actual lemon?

  10. I’m looking forward to this series very much Cyndi! And I love the verse, 1 Timothy 4:8 today. Great reminder to what’s most important. Have a healthy and blessed day!

  11. I’d eat lemons whole if I could look as good as you do! 😉 Thanks for the great info – looking forward to hearing more.

  12. thanks for the hints. It all makes so much sense really. Love this time of year because we have a big organic garden so there is never a lack of vegetables. Plus I put a fresh lemon wedge with a couple mint leaves in my water every day. So much easier to drink lots of water when it actually has a taste. 🙂

  13. What a great addition to your blog. I can never have enough information on good health and ways to improve.
    Have a great day Cyndi!

  14. Thank you Cyndi for adding a health component to the posts. After 40, beauty is near impossible without a commitment to health.
I would love- as you do with your fashion- real down to earth, real life, day to day recipes and suggestions.

    1. Suzanna! I am excited to share this weeks series with you – as for more recipes for healthy eating, check my pinterest boards!

  15. How can we actually measure our body’s pH level? As a past beautician I understand pH in hair but what or where do we test for the body?

  16. Thanks Cyndi, I am 47 and at age 25 began making kidney stones that has been a constant health problem since. My body is too acidic. I’ve done everything and always drink lemon in my water. I also have to take a high dosage of potassium citrate daily. This is just one very painful results of a PH unbalance. After many dr visits and tests we still do not know why my body creates such an imbalance. PH balance is very important. I also suffer with depression.

  17. great addition to your blog.!
is there still a test strip available for this alk/acidity situation ??

  18. Great post! I started drinking lemon water as soon as I lift my knees from morning prayer many years ago. I don’t think I could start my day without it at this point. Looking forward to your next post!!!

  19. Cyndi,
Beauty for the heart and a healthy body! Thanks sweet friend for sharing. 🙂
So just one drop of lemon essential oil in a glass of water? I will be ordering some lemon essential oil from you! How many times a day do you drink this lemon water?

  20. There does seem to be a lot on the internet lately about ph. I’ve been drinking a cup of warm water with apple cider vinegar in the morning instead of a second cup of coffee. It has been an easy switch for me.

  21. I really think we need this post! I am doing the 30 day shred by Jillian Michaels and all of the women on YouTube who post their results are very young. I am eating more fruits and veggies and will definitely try adding more lemon to my water. You look like you are in great shape! What is your exercise/workout regimen? I would love to see some posts on exercise for women over 40! Thank you so much and have a great day!!!!

  22. Hi Cyndi, really enjoy your blog. I too use YL lemon oil…what is your secret to keeping it from floating on the top of the water? TY!

  23. Hi Cindy. This is such a great idea and I am looking forward to your posts. My question is, how do we know if our ph isn’t in balance? Is there a test we can do? I know for a long time when I was in my twenties and early thirties my ph was way off and I was getting yeast infections and all kinds of problems. I haven’t had those problems since I’ve been in my forties and have been eating mostly fresh fruits and vegetables with lean meats. Thanks so much for your posts, I always look forward to seeing what you are up to. Sisters in Christ, Holly

  24. Cyndi, you touched on something I used to struggle with and that is focusing WAY TOO MUCH on things of this life, i.e., the way I look, fashion, etc. And, while God created us and all of these things to enjoy, I should focus the most on those things that will guide me to my salvation….living for Jesus Christ! Thank you for the reminder.
