Styling a Maxi Dress

One of the 10 Summer Fashion Essentials I shared on Saturday was a maxi dress. I know a lot of you love and wear maxi dresses but I don’t always feel like they are flattering on me.

I think a part of styling a maxi dress is finding the right style dress for your body type. I recently got this Gilli maxi dress in my Stitch Fix box and I fell in love with it.

This maxi dress is a little more fitted in the waist area with a wrap top and softly gathered details.

I love the colorful navy and white skirt and it’s soft, flowy fabric.

The Gilli brand is a made in America brand. I couldn’t find my exact dress but ModCloth has several Gilli dresses. The short dress is made like my maxi dress. I think it would be perfect for a summer wedding!

Beauty for the Heart~~I’m always finding paper in my Mom’s bibles that she has written on. I found this quote in her Bible the other day.

Jesus is not only IN you; He is BEFORE you to lead you. He is BEHIND you to guard you. He is BESIDE you to support and comfort you. He is ABOVE you to bless you.

Thanks for the reminder Mom!

Have a blessed day!

  1. I feel the same way about maxis – they look great on everyone except me! I love the way this one has a solid top. I think it looks fabulous on you! Thanks for the links! I am checking them out today! Susan

  2. I can see the four Gilli dresses but not any of the pictures of you in your dress.
Also, the page took a long time to load, but that could be my laptop. I’m not complaining – it’s just feedback.
I bought my first maxi dress this summer for my niece’s wedding. I was hoping to find something with short sleeves but ended up choosing a sleeveless dress. I’ve lost 110 pounds in the last few years, but I still have issues about my upper arms. 😉
I love your dress (I COULD see it when I first clicked the link from my email, but not after I clicked “read more”). I like the sleeves and the solid color on top with the print on the bottom. And I really love the print – bold but not crazy!

  3. I’m surprised all the other “shorties” find the maxi unflattering. I find they really elongate my stature and with a solid colour or single print and wedge heels, make me look much taller and slimmer.
I really like sleeveless in the Summer and halter is my favourite for maxi’s, although I appreciate the sleeve issue. I also prefer a casual look. For me this would be way to dressy. In fact, it is almost a duplicate of one of my Mom’s dresses that I wore to prom. It was so beautiful and designed by a Hawaian designer, but formal.
While I prefer other maxis you’ve styled better, comfort trumps all, so our opinion is irrelevant!

  4. For some reason I can’t see your photos. There is just big blank spaces where the photos would be and then the text. Is anyone else having that problem? I’ve never had a problem seeing your blog before.

  5. Cyndi, on both my phone and iPad, I can see your pics with the introduction to the post, but when I click “read more…”, I can only see the text and the pics you share of the Gilli dresses but not you in your dress. There are just white spaces where the pics should be. Is there something I need to do on my end to enable the pictures to be seen? Thanks.

  6. Love the quote from your mom. My mom’s “home-going” was two years ago today, and her favorite saying that she passed on to me & her granddaughters was, “always remember who you are, and whose you are”. She was a great Christian lady who loved the Lord with all her heart & soul. I am an only child & she was19 when I was born, so we sort of grew up together. Still miss her tremendously, but I do know there is a great reunion day coming! Praise God for His gift of eternal life.
Bought my first maxi dress right before July 4th. It was a small red, white, blue print with very thin straps. Wore it as it was, on my 4th “outing”, but styled it with a white, thin pullover for church the following Sunday. Thanks for your continued inspiration in all areas!

  7. Cyndi, you are so right about finding the right kind of maxi dress for your body. I have tried on some before that seemed like they were wearing me 😉 I have been expecially happy with the hi-lo style maxi dress. The elevated front gives me a little more moving room and some extra air.

  8. Cyndi, you look great in that dress. Your Stitch Fix clothes are always so classy, stylish and age appropriate. My latest few fixes have been awful. The clothes have been shapeless, cheap looking and completely inappropriate for my age and size (14). I often pin the clothes you feature from Stitch Fix on my Pinerest board but I never get them. Would you consider sharing what you have marked as your style preferences on the Stitch Fix blog as a guideline for others?

  9. This maxi dress looks nice on you. I think the sleeves makes this look rather dressy and not casual. I prefer a more casual look.

  10. Really a great look on you, Cyndi!! Maybe you like this particular dress because of the definition it gives to your waist – anyway love it on you, and the color is super too!! Thank you for sharing the thoughts from your Mom today – I have my beloved Grandma’s bible, and also enjoy finding and reading all her notes she wrote as she was studying God’s word –

  11. I love maxis. I have purchased a few a JCpenneys in the last few weeks. They are easy to wear, good coverage, and cute with wedge heals.
The secret to me, is the waist definition to your particular figure. Maxis are the one item I must try on before purchasing..on the hanger they may look cute, but the fit be a disaster on my shape.
    Cyndi,
I think you have a great gasp on what is most flattering on you…and this dress looks super cute!

  12. Love the Beauty from the Heart today. I am not a huge fan of maxi dresses, as I find they make me look larger, especially prints. I see them on others and think they look nice. Maybe I’m my own worst critic. LOL 🙂

  13. Super cute and looks great on you! I have a black and white striped maxi that I can add coral accessories to for some color. Do you find that you need to wear a slip? Some are so sheer. Looks great and what an awesome legacy your Mom has given you of leaving uplifting notes in her Bible! Thanks for sharing her with us!

  14. You look extra dressed up in that maxi and purse, so cute; I’m enjoying the change of background scenery; and that quote from your mom, that’s a treasure, it will go on my frig!

  15. Hi, I just wanted to say you always look lovely. I think your beautiful heart really shines in your smile.
I am not a fan of the maxi dress. I actually prefer short and cool sundresses. I did enjoy your summer must haves. You nailed it.
    Looking forward to future post.

  16. I got that same dress I’m my stitch fix this month, LOVE it! I don’t wear sleeveless things either so it was nice to get one with cap sleeves! Love the quote today – so true! Many thanks to your mom 😉

  17. I love the Bible quote, and I love this dress! I am only 5′ 2″ and would never think of wearing a maxi dress. Then I received one in my Stitch Fix box and I wear it all the time!

  18. Looking good Cyndi! Maxi dresses are not the best on me because I’m short and hard to find one that doesn’t make me look even shorter but I love them on everyone else! I’m into the swing dresses this summer and love wearing them in the heat we are having in OKC.

  19. Love the dress! It’s so hard to find a maxi with sleeves. I don’t wear sleeveless things and don’t want to wear another layer in this heat!

  20. Agree about the right maxi dress fit and love this one on you!!! If it’s a Josiphine fit I can’t do that…I look pregnant but if it’s a drop waist I can’t do that either…hits at my worst part…I would love to own this one tho!!!

  21. What a great note to find! I love finding things that my momma wrote – one, because it’s her handwritting, two, how great to know what she was thinking about! My mom died in 2001 after battling cancer 4 years. My life has never been the same.
The dress is pretty on you but I am not a fan of maxi-dresses on me AND I strongly recommend anyone wearing one to check the “back-view” 😀 As I believe I have said before, I see many women with them on and it is too obvious they have on thong-style undies, or ill-fitting others. I know it isn’t popular but a slip or something needs to be worn under a maxi dress (depending on fabric of course) to help with the panty lines and/or to help control the “jiggle”.

  22. Cyndi….so funny. My sister and I were just talking last night about maxi anything and I was saying that I don’t like them for a number of reasons, but mostly because I am 5′ 4″ and they make me look even shorter. She is 5′ 8″ and looks fabulous in them. How tall are you because you look absolutely FANTASTIC in this dress and I’m tempted to buy it!

  23. Hi Cyndi, You look fabulous in that maxi! I love the color on you and the style is so flattering. It’s hard to find a maxi with short sleeves like that. So many are on the skimpy side. Cheers, Deborah

  24. I love that dress! One of the cutest I’ve seen. I wonder if it is available somewhere other than stitch fix

  25. I love the Beauty from the Heart message from your mom. The maxi dress is beautiful on you. I have some that I love and a few I need to rid of because I don’t really like how the top part looks on me.
    Have a blessed day!

  26. That is easily one of the prettiest maxi dresses that I have seen. I have one maxi dress that I am planning on wearing to my niece’s tea party bridal shower next Sunday. I am not always comfortable in a maxi dress either; mostly because my legs are so long that most of them look short on me. I also love the church in the background of your pictures.

  27. Looks great on you, Cyndy! I love wearing maxi dresses. So comfy, cool, and flowy. Can be dressed up or down!

  28. This maxi dress is beautiful. Like that the top is different from bottom.
Beauty for the heart is something we all need to remember.
    Have an awesome Monday.

  29. I am over the moon in love with this dress!! It is just beyond cute and look amazing in it as always!!
