Summer Hair Tips: Hair Care & Styling

Summer-hair-tips
The heat and humidity have cranked up around here so I thought I would share some of my Summer Hair Tips with you.

My hair is fine but I have a lot of it, and it also gets frizzy when the humidity is high. This won’t be a shock to any of you, but I like me some volume. 🙂

Here is what I use to get volume, even in the summer months.

I blow dry my hair almost completely upside-down.  I just use my fingers to make sure it doesn’t get tangled and brush it out a little bit. Every couple of minutes, I use the cool shot feature on my dryer to “lock” my hair in place.

I have been using this OGX, Hydrate + Defrizz Kukuí Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. It has humidity resistant abilities, to help smooth texture and repel humidity.

I use velcro rollers on my hair to help get rid of the frizz and give my hair volume. To keep it looking good with the humidity I use my flat iron with my velcro rollers. (My daughter shared this tip with me and it works great!)

I section off my hair, run my flat iron over one section and then add the velcro roller. As SOON as I can, after I straighten a section with the flat iron, I put a velcro roller in that section.  I want my hair as hot as possible when I put the roller in.

rollers
I do this with each section of my hair, taking a section, flat iron it, and then add the velcro roller.

Then, I  let it set! I usually put on my makeup while I’m waiting for my hair to set…so about 15 minutes.

Once I take the rollers out, I flip my head over and kind of brush it out with my hands. I turn it back over, part it, and tease the crown up just a little with my teasing brush.

I use a teasing brush for the crown of my hair. This brush is great for back combing at the root of the hair to create major volume or for styling and touch-up work.

I brush it a little to get it looking like I want it and then I spray some hairspray and I’m done!

Beauty for the Heart~~I have been reading in scripture about patience. It’s funny how the more technology I have to help me do everything quick, the less patience I seem to have.

I schedule more in one day than I can get done, and then I lose my patience because I can’t get it done! It’s crazy!

I love this quote by Joni Eareckson Tada, “The times we find ourselves having to wait on others may be the perfect opportunities to train ourselves to wait on the Lord.”

So today I’m going to mindful of being patient with myself and with others. I’m going to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Hi Cyndi I have a question about your bangs how far back are your bangs cut I have read they are heavy bangs and blended into the top of your hair is that correct ? I love reading about all your fashion ideas also thank you Cyndi. Vicky Nodtvedt

  2. Hi There,

You girls are talking humidity…. which I love when I come to visit TN and KY. I live in the HOT Phoenix desert and I feel like my hair gets so dry it resembles scarecrow hair!! I hope this shampoo and conditioner works well for the dry hair too!! I loved the old formula of “Cat Walk Curls Rock” conditioner and shampoo because of the great volume it gave, they have since changed the formula and I haven’t found anything that compares (Boo Hoo!!) I’m putting my faith in the Kukui nut products and we’ll see. Thanks for the info.

  3. I, too, live in Kentucky and experience the humidity-related frizzy hair. I tried the Kukui Oil shampoo and conditioner… love it, love it. So glad you posted that brand – it works!!

    1. Love your hair wish mine was like that. I have baby fine hair. I can’t keep a curl or anything else for that matter in it to save my soul. When I try oil shampoos and conditioners they weigh my hair down, leaving me with no body. What I really would like to know is what kind of hair spray do you use? Will it hold all day style? As I work with clients threw out the day and need to be ready in a drop of a dime.
      Thanks for the AWSOME tips.
      Laurie

  4. I bought this shampoo and conditioner last week and have been using it and wow, what a difference it has made! My hair is silky and shiny even after a very humid day at our county fair yesterday it did not frizz at all! I’m a big fan!

Thank you SO much for your suggestion!

    Karen

  5. Hi Cyndi

I rushed right out and bought some Velcro rollers and styled my hair as you instructed. Wow I just love the volume I get now! My hair is cut pretty much just like yours but I could never get the volume I wanted until now. Thanks so much for this tip and honestly don’t know how I got along before this blog! Blessings !

  6. I am a 54 yr.old wife, mom, lover of big hair and the Lord :). We live in Ohio and have our share of hummidity in the Summer. What kind of hair spray so you use? I use Tresseme. I have blonde thick stubborn hair. Just curious. Thank you.

  7. Ok, I bought the shampoo and cream rinse at the local CVS and did exactly what you described. LOVE it! It worked perfectly! I have used the big velcro rollers for years, but the drying upside down and then the flat iron step made all the diffence. I like the others would love a suggestion on a good humidity fighting hair spray.
We are expected to reach 100 degrees today in Texas, so I guess the real verdit on how this handled humidity will be at the end of the day.?
Your blog is something I look forward to every day. Thank you!

  8. Hi Cyndi 🙂 I LOVE your hair! Do you use any other products to get volume? Favorite hairspray this summer? Thanks for the beauty advice ; )

  9. I honestly thought I was melting today. My hair is very thick but I might try the shampoo/conditioner. Have a cool day!

  10. Great tips, Cyndi! Thanks! Oh, and something I do with rollers as well is I use my blowdryer to put a little heat on them once they’re in — just gives them an extra “shot” of heat to help them set. A friend of mine actually uses a flexible hairspray BEFORE she uses her rollers, but I find that I prefer to use it afterwards.
    Have a great day!

  11. Oh my – I love that hot iron/velcro roller hair tip! Love love love BIG hair!
    Thanks, Cyndi!

  12. Hi Cyndi! Your hair always looks great. I haven’t used rollers in a long time, but I think I just may bring them out again…cause I like a little “poof” too ;-)… must be an 80’s thing. I prefer the instyler over a flat iron. It also gives more body yet takes out the frizz. I have naturally curly hair but straighten it. So i deal with frizz on humid days too ;-( yuk! I also have lots of hair, but medium textured. How does the shampoo and conditioner rate on the “think dirty app”? love Joni’s quote as well. thanks for all the tips!

  13. Thank you for these tips. I will have to try the shampo and conditioner. My hair is thick, coarse and curly with frizz. I use a flat iron and it has been so dry lately. I have started using a lower blow dry setting which is helping my hair to not look so damaged and i am thinking of trying rollers to smooth out and help the frizz. Thanks for the tip to use a flat iron with curlers and showing pictures of each step. My stylist recently used a hair spray by Bed Head with shine that I really liked. Have a blessed day!!

  14. I am going to get the shampoo and conditioner also and a flat iron and try this,. I have Velcro rollers already.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  15. You need to do a video tutorial on back combing. I’ve tried it and all I manage to get is knots! I like volume too but don’t know how to get it! Your hair is longer than mine, now that you’ve been growing it out but any tip you can give would be appreciated!

    1. Hi Sheila,
I believe Cyndi did a “style my hair” video a few years ago. She shows how to do backcombing.

  16. Great tips! Your hair always looks beautiful! I style my hair before I leave for work every morning but as soon as I hit the door the humidity melts it flat, except for my bangs which gets frizzy! Ugh! I’ve tried hairspray and all that does is make it flat and stringy. I’m looking forward to picking the shampoo/conditioner up on my lunch hour today and try it tomorrow because the humidity today is awful! I’ll probably end up pulling my hair back in a clip on my lunch hour since it’s so bad!

    Thanks!

  17. I just found your blog! What great advice for summer hair. My husband and I recently moved from California to Virginia, so it’s been an adjustment for my locks 😉

  18. Cute hair style. Sounds like to much time & trouble to take care of. That’s why I have a pixie cut. Wash it, put some product in your hands run them through your hair & style it & you are good to go. I also have VERY thick hair.

  19. I have super thick naturally curly hair. I live up in Montana and it gets super dry up here. I still struggle with frizz though, goes with the curly hair territory. Lol. Anyway, I use Diva curl products, they are made for curly hair and sulfate free. Then I let my hair dry naturally if I have the time, sometimes if I am in a hurry I will use a blow drier for the front. As a child I hated my thick curly hair but as an adult I have grown to love it.

  20. What type/brand of flat iron do you use? I’m currently shopping for a new one. There’s so many different ones out there…it’s confusing!

    1. Hi Jen….I don’t know what kind of flat iron Cindi uses but I’ve used the Chi flat iron for around 10 years now….on my 3rd one, it’s that good! A little pricey but well worth it.

  21. I have frizzy hair too…all the time. I will try to find the Kuku shampoo and conditioner…is it a salon variety? I will also try the velcro rollers when I flat iron. I admire YOUR volume in your posts. Thank you for sharing. Sherry

  22. I’ll have to try the Velcro rollers. I use a flat iron too because my hair tends to wave and it will frizz if I don’t use Moroccan oil when it’s wet. I’m going to ask my hairdresser tomorrow about what you use for my hair. Thanks for the tips girl and love your beauty for the heart today!

  23. I love your hair Cyndi! Like you, I have a lot of finely textured hair. I wear my hair up most of the time and therefore need to keep it longer to do so.

What hairspray do you use??? Have a wonderful day! ?
