The ’70s inspired style isn’t about to end anytime soon and one of the biggest trends this fall is tie neck blouses.

Just for fun, I thought I would share this picture of Mom and my sister (she’s the baby) and I from the ’70s. I didn’t have a bow blouse but I was rockin the bows on my sleeves.

This is why I can’t ever keep up with my Mom, she made all three of our dresses. Who can do that with a newborn? She.was.amazing.and.beautiful! (She was also rockin lace up boots!)

  1. No on the tie neck blouses; I could never tie them properly and was so glad when went out of style the last time.

My mother sewed all our clothes, too. How she found the time I will never know. She’s about to turn 81 and I’m still in awe of her!

  2. Nope. I predict Nordstrom will be selling these for $12.99 next spring and then dumping them on Ross or Goodwill. Some styles should never be revived. RIP necktie blouses.

  3. One of favorite memories, in the early 80’s ish was going yo fabric stories or Kmart and looking at the huge pattern books. They were sectioned off into categories..I loved the ball gowns and sleep wear.
My grandmother made huge portion of my clothes. It was so fun to pick a new pattern for a dress or skirt/ top for back to school.

  4. Ah Cindy, the memories are so fun! I have a picture of me with my tie blouse and I was styling’! I just showed it to my 22 year old daughter the other day because I saw a similar item in a magazine! It is hard to believe they are coming back! Blessings –
    Lori

  5. Hi Cyndi Girl – The picture of Mama and the girls is so precious. I’ll say your Mama was rockin’ the whole 70s vibe with her hair, outfit and boots. I bet you didn’t know how cool she was!
I am such a fan of the tie neck blouse, they always look so chic and so right with jeans or trousers or a pencil skirt. I really like the white tie neck faux wrap blouse, I would wear that at least once a week. Thanks for sharing your family picture! Be Blessed!

  6. Cyndi,

I really enjoyed this – love the tie blouses – but mostly love the last pic with your mom. You look so much like her, and I know you were close. I still miss my mom so much. I found out recently I’m going to be a grandma, and it’s a girl! I keep thinking of how thrilled my mom would be. But, she’s with the Lord now, and in a much better place. Thank you so much for sharing – It makes me think of happy times.

  7. This is one trend I’ve been considering for awhile, but finally concluded it wasn’t for me. As a stay at home mom, it just doesn’t fit my style. I do like seeing on others and reserve the right to change my mind, lol.

  8. I love the tie blouses, I have a couple but did see some on here that I want! Love the picture of all yall, my mom to made our clothes. I have a younger sister and she always dressed us alike so I remember those days and she wore boots also if I remember right the were white.
She is gone now but the memories are always there, thanks for always sharing!!
Look forward to your blog everyday.

    Thanks
    DeeDee

  9. Oops! I just realized that you are the one standing beside your mom. Sorry.
But you are definitely a beautiful child.

  10. Cyndi, even as a baby you were beautiful! The seventies were my growing up years.
I remember them well. lol Seeing you and your sister with your mom makes me smile as I sit here and remember my own mom, who I lost this past Tuesday. Please say a prayer for my family as we get through this sad time.

  11. I think I will NOT be “on-trend” this fall! Lol Definitely not a fan of the tie neck blouses (really not a fan of blouses period), flared jeans, or fringe. Like someone else commented, I think they definitely age us. I think of older ladies wearing a gabardine suit ?. I do however, love suede, so I’m sure I can incorporate some suede loafers or boots into my fall wardrobe. ?? Thanks for sharing the photo. I remember my mom and grandmother making most of our clothes when I was younger, also in the 70’s. I also remember them making lined blazers and coats and draperies. When I think back about how time consuming and how much patience that must have required, I’m just amazed. Definitely not a task I ever took the time to learn, although sometimes I wish I had taken the time, if nothing else to spend the time with my mother and grandmother.

  12. Love the picture! I used to sew matching dresses for my two daughters and me when they were little – especially at holiday times. It was so fun and special to wear them together. As for time, I think we would all be surprised just how much time we spend online these days. Probably would have time to sew if we didn’t have the internet! 🙂

As for tie blouses, I used to wear them often. One drawback was that those made of “slick” fabric often came loose and untied. I hope the reintroduction of the tie blouse doesn’t mean scarves are going out. I enjoy wearing scarves more than blouses with ties.

  13. Your Mom IS beautiful – I too love her hair!! I remember doing myMom’s hair like that for her – such good memories!! My Mom also could sew anything on here sewing machine – we grew up on a farm in the Dakota’s – she could see something, figure out how to do it, and whip it up on her machine without a pattern – I always was in AWE of her!! She made such beautiful things for us, and kept us “in fashion” when there wasn’t the money to buy them – and she didn’t think she was a very good seamstress!!!
My high school and college years was during the 70’s – there was a lot of things that were cute and fun, but I will have to say the tie blouse was not a favorite – it was “old looking” even then – out teachers wore that look (and they were old) ?

  14. Love the photo… In the 70’s most of my friends made our own clothes so they could be “custom” hahahaha. I have some funny pictures of me in homemade prom dresses, Easter outfits, bridesmaid dresses and my wedding dress. I don’t know how we had the time, but I think instead of wasting all the hours at the mall and online shopping like we do these days, we just sewed. We certainly did not run around to stores on Sundays or online shop at midnight! Yes, there’s a pic of me in a homemade tie blouse and elephant pants….when double knit first came on the scene! I will not be doing the tie again 🙂

  15. Love the white and white and black shirt …I think it brings elegance to a regular outfit.
Thank you for sharing your pics with us ! Your moms up do is beautiful!

  16. So far what I am learning about fall fashion from your blog is that I will mostly be wearing what I wore last year!

  17. another great beauty for the heart. I wonder what the hairstyles are going to be trending toward with the 70s revisit..???????

there does seem to be a nice balance to ones look with the tie necklines AND great for ams when one does not have time for the necklace etc.

thanks for sharing the great photo. I still wonder how we seamstresses found time for all the things we did.

  18. Love the picture today friend! How did our moms have time to sew? My mom made all 6 girls dresses too! Truly amazing!
I didn’t like the tie necks back in the day so I’ll prob skip this trend. I really prefer a V neck or scoop neck these days.

  19. Love the 70s look! Bright colors and fun prints! I like the lower tie neck best. What a special picture of your mom, sis and you. Your mom is rocking those boots and the big hair. Love it!

  20. I love the photo of y’all! My mom used to sew our clothes as well. I am not real crazy about the tie blouses. As always, thanks for sharing the scripture. God bless!

  21. I’m not so sure about the tie neck blouse for me, I definitely would prefer the tie below the neck for sure. Thank you for Beauty for the Heart today, definitely needed to hear this! Have a great afternoon! 🙂

  22. Tie blouses make me think of Dustin Hoffman in the movie, “Tootsie!” LOL I won’t say that I’ll never try one, but it would have to be the right one. I don’t want to look too buttoned up but don’t need to add volume to the “girls” either.

  23. I never say never, but will have to see…I don’t really like them tight on the neck, so if lower maybe.
Love the family pic! so cute! I can remember my mom wearing her hair that way 🙂 and she would sew clothes for the two of us too. She never made anything for my brother or dad that I recall.

  24. I will certainly be buying some neck tie blouses. I am a 70’s girl too! Your Mom was rockin in the 70’s. Very pretty lady!

  25. Amazing that she was able to make all 3 outfits with a newborn! My mom sewed my clothes as well as many for herself. How did they do it? Thanks for sharing the sweet picture. I’m not a big fan of the bow neck shirts/blouses. I just don’t like the extra fussiness. 🙂 Thanks for your blog, I LOVE it! Looking forward the the 26 days of fall fashion!!

  26. I like the tie neck on other people but don’t know that I’ll try it. Not a fan of something to “tight” on my neck–can’t stand a turtleneck!! Plus, I agree with Jodie, they seem old ladyish–I was very young in the 70’s so, to me, it was old ladies wearing them! 🙂 Seems very grandma to me. I’m not quite 40 yet. been married 10 years and I frequently get called kiddo, miss and young lady. I don’t think I”d get those comments in a tie neck blouse. 🙂

  27. I love a tie neck blouse because I don’t like to always wear a necklace…so It gives
my shirt some dimension without the added weight of a necklace…..As far as the other 70’s trends…”been there done that”…won’t do again:D

  28. Didn’t wear tie blouses before and don’t plan on wearing them now. As for jeans, I think I will stick with bootcut or skinny. No flare for me

  29. No tie blouses for me! I felt like a little kid playing dress-up the first time around and I don’t care to revisit this particular trend. Same for flare jeans. Lovely picture!

  30. I don’t personally care for tie neck blouses…but I don’t care for anything up that far – no turtlenecks for me, no crew neck sweaters, etc. just bothers me to have something up so high on my neck – don’t even care for scarfs really. choose to do a pretty necklace instead but maybe a loose lower hanging like the leopard shirt sorta was.

  31. I love the this look. I am a 70’s girl so it bring it on!! Especially the second picture, white wrap blouse, love!! Have a great day.

  32. I lived the 70″s once, don’t want to do the tie blouses! Once was enough! I don’t like those flare pants either! I most I would do is boot leg, no wider! Love your throwback photo!

  33. I love that picture! Not so much the tie neck blouses. Did that the first time around. I “think” I will pass this time but never say never! 🙂

  34. Cyndi, Your picture is so sweet. Your mom looks like a Marica. Brady with those cool clothes on. My mom could sew too and I just wonder where she found the time. I love tie blouses. I have several in all colors. They offer a dress look with jean and heels. Thanks for all your time you share with us. Keep looking up!

  35. I don’t care for the tie blouses. Never really did. Then or now. #2 and 3 were my favorite though. Thanks for keeping us on trend.

  36. What a precious picture and memory of you and your sister with your mom! I’m a fan of the bow neck blouses, especially the animal print one! I remember wearing this trend back in the day. If you keep it long enough, it’ll come back in style!

  37. I love today’s beauty for the heart! Lord, help me to have a heart of contentment and not grumbling. Have a blessed Monday Cyndi!

  38. If I try this trend, I think I’m going to have to do it tone on tone to ease myself into it. 🙂 I adore the picture of your mom, sister, and you. I remember my mom made herself and me long maxi dresses out of the Hawaiian print way back in ’73 or something like that. She was a marble with the sewing machine. I can barely sew a straight seam. 🙂
