3 Ways To Wear Leggings

3-Ways-To-Wear-LeggingsI get asked about leggings quite a bit. Can I wear leggings? Am I too old to wear leggings? How do I wear them? Today I’m sharing 3 Ways To Wear Leggings.

We seem to have a fascination with leggings! They’re a versatile and comfy wardrobe staple.

Can women over 40 wear them? Of course we can, the key is wearing them the right way (Younger ladies need to wear them the right way too!).

Here are three ways to wear this comfy and soft staple and still look polished.

1. Wear them with a skirt. For a more casual look with your black skirt add leggings and a denim jacket.

3-Ways-To-Wear-Leggings2. Wear them with a longer tunic. I love wearing leggings with a tunic but the key is to make sure the tunic is long enough. Check your back area in the mirror before heading out!

3-Ways-To-Wear-Leggings3. Wear them with a dress. If I have a dress that’s several inches above my knee, I love to add leggings.

3-Ways-To-Wear-LeggingsWhat are the best leggings to wear? I hear a lot of women love the hue leggings from Nordstrom. Although right now they only have brown. Another pair of leggings with great reviews is Lou & Grey ponte leggings.

I was given tummy tuck leggings from Glamour Farms (use Spivey211 for $10 off your Glamour Farms purchase). I love them because they have the tummy tuck but they’re still comfortable. They are one size fits most so if you’re unsure, you can call them to see if they will work for you!

Do you wear leggings? What is your favorite brand?

  1. My favorite brand are Buskins! They are extremely soft, not see through, high quality and come in a variety of styles, from solids to fun prints & jeggings. (Starting around $17)

You can get more info on Buskins at:

I would love to send you a pair to get your feedback on!

  2. My favorite brand of leggings is Buskins. They are the most amazingly soft leggings I never want to take off! I sell them on a website and get 25% off the already low prices. Can’t go wrong.

  3. Hi Cindi,

I just came across you blog today. I am a leggings freak. Just bought the pair you suggested from The Loft. I think having a thicker fabric is essential. So many are too transparent and it really takes away from the look. My rule of thumb is to wear something that completely covers the hips. The leggings have to be constructed really well for me to wear something higher than that, which can be a really great look if pulled off well.

  4. Love all your fashion advice! I pulled together an outfit with leggings that I saw you wearing and got so many compliments! You truly mix Grace and Beauty by sharing your faith!

  5. Hi Cyndi!

I found your blog just before Christmas and love it! I love my leggings. LuLaRoe are my favorite. I’m curious, when you wear with a skirt do you have to wear a slip? My leggings and tights always cause my skirts to stick and bunch. Wondering how you solve that. Thanks!

  6. Hi Cyndi!
I look forward to your posts every day, and have followed many of your suggestions this season-thank you! I wear the HUE leggings with the wide waistband and found them at BON TON and Younker’s online in black. I love the blue polka dot dress and wonder where it was purchased? Thanks for your help!

  7. Love your outfits 🙂 Thanks for the advice on leggings. I like to use them to take some of my dresses and shorts into cooler weather. Being short, I have trouble finding ones that are not too long. I just got some at JC Penny which are working so far. I’ll have to see how they hold up.

  8. Cyndi, you look super cute in all the outfits! I particularly like the 3rd with the blue dress. I was curious, where did you get the necklace you wore with that outfit? It’s really cute! 😊

  9. I love leggings, my favorite ones are some fleece lined ones I bought from an online botique. These are like wearing your pjs all day, I am over 40 and I agree you can wear them, but in addition to making sure your backside is covered you need to make sure its long enough in the front to cover you crotch (for lack of a better word). I’m a teacher so I wear them all winter with boots and long sweaters and tunics. Love your site!,

  10. I ordered the ah-mazing leggings from glamour farms in October. They came, but they are too wrinkly around my knees and too long so wrinkly around my ankles. I can’t return them but would love to wear them if I could figure out how to make them work. Any suggestions? They were $27 each so I don’t want to wait that! Please help!

  11. Cyndi
I’ve been looking for a black knit skirt and wondering where you got the one in your first photo. BTW, I am wearing the Wit & Wisdom jeans you had on the other day and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. The best jeans I have had in a long time. And you were right on the sizing, the 6 fit me perfectly. Thanks again.

  12. The leggings look great. I haven’t worn them for decades but you are inspiring me to try them again!

    Blessings,

    Beth

  13. At 5’7″ tunics are rarely long enough for me to feel comfortable in leggings. I think they are appropriate at any age as long as they are worn appropriately – and boy is there a wide range on what’s appropriate! I tend to wear dresses with tights as you have shown the dresses with leggings in your blog. I love black on black printed tights. This year I’ve started wearing booties more with my tights. Merry Christmas!

  14. cute cute outfits. Just when I am feeling like venturing into the leggings I see what is clearly someone trying to use some too small pantyhose for a pair of leggings with a bright pink puffy jacket. fortunately she was wearing her granny undies under them.

  15. I love them! and wear mostly on the weekends since they aren’t work appropriate. (occasionally I’ll wear on a Friday when most people aren’t at work :)). They are comfy! I like the ones from White House Black Market – although pricey, they hold up well and are thicker fabric. I will say though, I have found several pair for my daughter at TJ Maxx for under $15 and the fabric was nice and thicker on those too – she loves them and wears them all the time with boots this time of year (she’s 24). I have a pair of the Hue brand, and they are comfy, but tend to stretch out at the knees and the black has faded on them some even though I don’t ever dry them in the dryer – hang to dry only.

    1. Clarification…they aren’t work appropriate in my office most days. :-), even with a longer tunic. Maybe with a dress…I’ve never tried that, so thanks for that suggestion.

  16. Cyndi, I just found your blog recently and I just love it and you! Your outfits are so cute and inspire me. I’m 46, married and 2 kids. My son is 12 and my daughter is 10. I want to be cute and stylish again. I was always dressed well and then kind of lost myself when i had my kids. All along I’ve kept cute hair and pretty makeup but got in the rut of jeans and a tshirt. It’s time to bring style back to my wardrobe and you are leading my way. 😄 And most importantly I love the Beauty for the Heart. God bless you and your family. And can you tell me where the brown boots are from in outfit 1? ❤️

    1. Hi Stacy!! So nice to meet you!! Thank you for stopping by. The boots I’m wearing in the first picture are sold out. :-(. Sorry about that!!
      Merry Christmas,
      cyndi

  17. I am starting to love leggings (now that I have dressy boots). I found some more at JCPenney a couple of weeks ago so now I have black, dark brown and dark gray.

  18. Cyndi –

You are so adorable that you look great in everything you wear and post on your website. I get very inspired when I check out what you are wearing in your daily posts. As we age, there is no reason to stop looking cute or feeling good about ourselves! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and please continue providing us “older” gals suggestions and tips for helping us stay vibrant, fashionable, and current. God bless you and yours this holiday season.

  19. Zella from Nordstrom. They’re actually active wear. In my third season with my original pair. They still look and wear like new. Just wash and air dry. Wear them, tunics and boots everyday!

  20. Little ones are so adorable Cyndi! Yesterday during our 16 year old granddaughters ballet studios performance of The Nutcracker, one little girl waved to the audience as they danced by on the stage.
I really like all of your outfits! Yes, I have black leggings that I enjoy wearing, with a longer top for sure! I like the Vera Wang brand from Kohl’s. I saw one older female yesterday at the performance that had on black leggings, a regular fitting long sleeve t-shirt for the ballet company, and knee high Nutcracker socks, over the bottom of her leggings. Not a pretty sight, to say the least.
    Have a blessed day!

  21. I purchased my first leggings at Target and they are Spanx brand and love them. The fit is great and they support my tummy. 🙂 I am 5/4″ and they are long but I just have them go all the way to my toes because I wear them usually with boots!

  22. I bought my first and only purchase (so far) of leggings from glamour Farms that Cyndi suggested and I absolutely love them! They are very comfortable and have that nice tummy control in them. I have only worn them with a tunic, but I hope to shop for more tunics/dresses. Thanks for the cute ideas, Cyndi!

  23. I think this is a great opportunity when we find a cute dress but it’s too short to wear leggings under them as a nice long tunic…..a win-win!

  24. I just bought a pair for the Loft Anna i love them! They are very soft and so comfortable! I struggle to find leggings long enough as I’m 6’0. So I was super excited to find these!

    1. Donielle, I am 5’11”, so I’m very interested in your comment. I googled Loft Anna leggings and came up with Ann Taylor leggings. Are they the ones you mentioned? I saw some came in tall, but the sizes are very limited as to what they have left. Thanks for any help you can give me in directing me to the right ones.

      1. I’m hopping in here since I’m a tall gal too. Soma has some great leggings with slimming waist. They are very long. My length is in my legs AND waist and these look great with ballet flats, boots or wedges. I got denim blue, plum paisley and black.

  25. I recently bought the leggings Cyndi talks about from Glamour Farms and I really like them.
    Comfortable and snug…..

  26. Love the tunic you show in #2. Where is it from? I recall seeing you style it earlier in the year.
    Many thanks ! Merry Christmas1

    Cyndi M.

  27. Thank you for this post! I struggle with my comfort level and leggings. I’ve worn them around the house for years but always feel so exposed when I try to venture out (even when all my basics are covered!). Seeing you in them looking fabulous and confident really helps. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

  28. Thanks for the great tips Cyndi! I love Lysse’ leggings! They are a bit more expensive but are thick and have some spandex to give a bit of control. It seems to me there are different styles of leggings to be worn different ways…. some are for the gym…. some are more like tights….some are more dressy…. some are more casual…. and some are more like jammies! It seems to depend on the thickness and the fabrics used to make them! I seem to have one pair at least in each of these categories😊 Thanks! Krista

  29. Thanks so much for your postings, Cyndi! I love how you have outfits for ‘normal’ women over the age of 40 (or so)! Merry Christmas!

  30. I am 60+ and wear leggings all the time! I love to layer long tops of different lengths with vests and sweaters over them. I tried the Hue wide band leggings from Nordstrom and love them! I wear boots, both long and short, with my leggings in winter and flats in warmer weather. Sometimes I will add boots socks for warmth and variety. You can wear leggings if you use good sense at almost any age.

    1. Thank you Sandy for your reply!!! I’m 55 and unsure at times how I’m pulling something off. Great positive input (common sense too!).
      Merry Christmas!

  31. Cyndi,
I too struggle with leggings. I love them, but worry if they are appropriate. I usually go with a tunic length top. (Actually wearing such today). I just bought a pair of leggings at Costco. Not sure of the brand, but I love them. Firm enough fabric to hold everything tight, yet comfortable. Bought them in black, but plan on going back for grey and navy. Have a great day. Merry Christmas.
