Skin Care Routine For Women Over 40 (PM)

In February, I shared my AM skin care routine with you. I’m finally getting around to sharing my PM skin care routine.

Skin Care Routine For Women Over 40 (PM)

I look for products that are cost effective and are free from harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, my products are not all chemical free.

I’m also looking for products that make my skin look like it did in my 20’s and so far I haven’t found that yet {wink}. One area that is starting to bother me is my neck.

I spent too much time in the sun when I was younger and I let my neck burn, and I’m now paying for it. I added the Intensive Anti-Aging Micro firm Neck & Décolleté to my AM and PM skin care routine (purchased through my dermatologist). The verdict is still out on this one. Have you found a neck cream that you think works?

When I shared my AM routine, I was using Algenist eye cream and I wasn’t crazy about it. I went to my dermatologist office and I purchased Lumiere eye cream. I’m not sure about this one either, I’m still searching for a good eye cream.

Skin Care Routine

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser//Timeless 20% vitamin c + e ferulic acid serum//Timeless Matrixyl 3000 Serum//Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream (I accidentally purchased the day one with SPF, I’m using it but I meant to purchase the night one)//Intensive Anti-Aging Micro firm Neck & Décolleté (purchased through my Dermatologist)

Timeless offers $5.00 off the Timeless Products, use discount code Grace5off (qualifying items include the 1 oz and 2 oz sizes only, minimum purchase of $13.95).

I wrote a whole post on the two Timeless products and I still love both of these!

Lastly, I have been asked to try Colleen Rothschild Skin Care Line. I met Colleen at the Rewardstyle conference in April. I do love to try different products and will let you know about this line in the near future.

Beauty For the Heart~~Proverbs 14:30a (NLT) says, A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body.

Stress is one of the worst things for our body. Stress can cause premature aging, and health problems. We all have stress but we need to give our problems to the Lord, he can handle it better than we can.

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22

Have a blessed day!

  1. At the age of 50, I was diagnosed with melanoma, located on my neck. After two procedures for removal, I have a two-inch scar front and center on my neck! This was a wake-up call in many ways, but one was that I needed to take better care of my skin (lots of sun exposure over the years). My research led me to Rodan + Fields and I couldn’t be happier! I am now a consultant for these multi-med products! The regimes are formulated for specific concerns (aging, sensitivity, sun damage, and acne) and the results are amazing. The eye cream is a winner! These are the best products and won’t break your bank! Thanks for letting me rave!

  2. Bobbie Brown eye cream is one of the best and I have used it for years. It also works well under her corrector/conceler which I also think is just great. The best thing for my skin has been Alpha Hydroxy and prescription Retin A…I use Tretinoin. I am 67 and began using it when I was about 59…I wish I had started earlier so you are at a great age to begin…I am amazed at how it really does minimize lines. People often comment that my skin looks younger than my age so I think it really does work. I started noticing a change after about 2 months…I would definitely try it! Good luck!

  3. Bobbie Brown has a wonderful hydrating eye cream. I love it and have used it for years. It is perfect too for making corrector/concealer under the eye go on smoothly too….Good luck finding one you like, and thanks for the great tips as always….

  4. I wasn’t impressed with any eye creams until I recently tried Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Eye Brightening Concentrate. It’s the first time that I’ve noticed any difference. My daughter also gave me their Midnight Recovery Concentrate that I’m going to try. Thank you for sharing your routine.

  5. I’ve tried EVERYTHING, including laser treatments (twice) from my dermatologist! I tried Rodan and Fields last year and fell in love!! I used to “piece meal” products from different brands which didn’t give me very good results, but RF has regimens that work together. I like this line better than the crazy expensive Obagi that I got from my dermatologist!

  6. As we get aged it is good to use skin care products to prevent from aging. I used solvaderm stemuderm to get rid of wrinkles. The solvaderm stemuderm is also anti-acne so it is perfect for my age.

  7. As we get aged it is good to use skin care products to prevent from aging. I used solvaderm stemuderm to get rid of wrinkles. The solvaderm stemuderm is also anti-acne so it is perfect for my age. I have been using solvaderm for a year and it makes me to look young and bright.

  8. Cyndi, there is a website- Beautypedia.com – that rates practically every skin care and makeup product on the market. This site is headed by Paula Begoun, aka, the Cosmetics Cop. She also has a product line called Paula’s Choice. She sells several products on QVC now so you can see the ratings there, too. Her Clinical 1% Retinol is highly rated. I have not used this product but do use the 2% BHA which is a pore minimizer.

  9. Ever considered making your own facial oil? I started gradually about 3 years ago;first using clarins lotus face oil, then adding a few drops of frankincense….now i just make my own mix w jojoba oil, rosehip oil, argan and add EO’s like frank and myrrh geranium, etc 🙂 just a thought…but i could never use commercia creams etc now…it just feels wonderful :)!!

  10. I just changed to a new dermatologist that came highly recommended and she and her entire office use Johnson’s baby shampoo to cleanse/wash their faces every morning and evening. I just started, and have been very pleased…and you can’t get any cheaper that baby shampoo!

    1. I have rosacea and baby shampoo is exactly what I use!! (Most people cannot even tell I have it.) I found the baby shampoo tip when researching blogs/forums after being diagnosed. I’m a Clinique/Estee Lauder fan for most (but not all) else.

  11. Cyndi.
I just found Beautycounter, a chemical-free skin care line that so far I really really like!! I bought the foundation, eyebrow pencil, blush, cover stick and lip gloss and love them all. The best part is every ingredient rates no higher than a 2 on EWG.com (environmental working group) which is excellent!!! My next purchase is going to be their skin care ptoducts. You should check them out!

    1. Diane,
I too use Beautycounter and have been for over 6 months. I use their Countertime skin care line and am very happy with it (It’s for mature skin!!) I also use their tint skin complexion coverage and LOVE it. This goes on so smooth using just 2 small drops and looks so natural! Also their sunscreen is wonderful! It’s zinc oxide but goes on so nice and without that white residue look – love that!!

  12. I am a Mary Kay consultant & have faithfully used Mary Kay products for over 30 years. The newer Time Repair System is fabulous, and has a complete line of products for us “vintage girls.” The eye cream products are wonderful, as well as the eye mask referred to in an earlier comment.

  13. Cyndi😊 I love Mary Kay eye mask. It’s a tiny jar of cooling gel that I would not be without, especially in the mornings! At night…I really like their Age-defying eye cream. Thought I’d share.

  14. If you and your sis go to Cincy, let me know so I can “stalk” you and “accidentally” run into you. Seriously, I’d love to say hi to you both and thank you for all you’ve provided over the past few years.
I use Curel Itchy skin, Dermapro, Concha de Nacar. I used to use Burt’s Bess carrot seed lotion and their royal Jelly decolletee cream. Both were AMAZING products, but now sadly discontinued. Maybe we should start a campaign to reinstated them.

  15. You will love Coleen Rothschild’s products. I think my favorite is their cleansing balm! AND if you try it and don’t like it, you can send it to me!😜

  16. I too am in search of a good pm eye cream. I’ve tried several of the $100+ for a tiny little jar – some work but nothing I’m overly excited about. I see many have mentioned Boots #7, and I have a friend who swears by it. I have been on and off Retin-A for years – need to be more on than off – HA! I suppose my problem was always…do I use a moisturizer over it? ANd then the peeling was always unattractive. I was lucky I suppose, my mother drilled in my head starting at about 12 years of age, the importance of cleansing my face thoroughly at night AND in the morning, using moisturizer and eye cream. I didn’t start with cosmetics until I was about 15-16 – and very little then, but my momma was a stickler about washing my face at night :). I’m thankful now as I’ve read how bad it is to sleep in make up. As I’ve gotten older I’m sometimes amazed how much “dirt” comes off in the morning when I cleanse my face.

  17. The Rodan+Fields skincare products are wonderful! I use the Redefine regimen. The basic line is a simple 3-step process used morning and night. Other products, such as the eyecream, can be added to it. I’ll turn 70 this year (yikes!) and I have never been one to spend much time on my skincare routine until the last few years. These products are amazing!

  18. I’m 54 and use the Boots No. 7 line is what I use. It came highly recommended by The Doctors. Their research showed that it is as or more effective as the very high priced products, but is very affordable. It is available at ULTA, Target, Walgreens etc. It is GOOD stuff!

  19. I have never been one to visit a dermatologist or spend a lot of dollars on skin care products. I know we are all going to age……that’s how God designed us. That being said, I do still try to take care of myself, my skin and my hair – within reason. I don’t want to spend my retirement fund on cosmetics. LOL Fortunately, I’ve never had a lot of problems with acne or blemishes but I do enjoy being in the sun. As I’ve gotten older, I always make sure I use sunscreen on my face and I’ve become more diligent about washing my face at night (I never did than until recently). I have used Bare Minerals make-up for several years, which is supposed to be more natural but I have never used their skin care products. I have been using L’Oreal Revitalift cleanser for a few years and then a couple of times a week, I use my Clarisonic – on my face and neck. For a moisterizer, I use Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar (LOVE this stuff!) and for eye cream, I use L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler. I have always had dark circles under my eyes and not only has this helped fade them, it has helped with the beginnings of the dry, crepey skin under the eyes. It ranges from $20-$25, depending on where you buy it but I love it! I know you have mentioned problems with under eye circles before, so you may want to give it a try. Mine aren’t gonemind you, but they do seem to be not quite so dark. And I’ve only used one tube…..getting ready to start on my 2nd so maybe that will do the trick! 😉

  20. Mary Kay Timewise Repair is excellent and not nearly as expensive as the dermatologist brands.

  21. I always wear sunglasses every time I step outside and when I’m in the car even when it’s raining. If my eyes squint I have my glasses on.

  22. I’m a skincare junkie and love trying new products. A year ago I used the same eye cream you’re using and after I ran out, I ordered a few different ones to try. After using a few others (Kiehls, 100% Pure, & Lancôme) I realized that one works best. I am reordering Lumiere now. Hopefully you find good results with it. Thanks also to a few comments that suggested Retin A. I used to use Retin A and got out of the routine of it. Time to get another prescription!

  23. I have been using Lancôme eye and I love that. I also use Serious Skin Care from HSN. It has a cream for crepe skin under the eyes and I have had great success with that. Eye areas are sensitive so you must be careful. Serious Skin Care also has a cream you put directly on the lids which is hard to find.

  24. I have always loved trying new products and hoping to find the magic bullet. So far, no such luck but I’ve recently started a new PM routine that makes my facial skin smooth, soft and almost glows. I’m 56 and last week the woman sitting next to me at church commented on my skin! I recently read about cleaning facial skin with a dry oil like Argon so I thought I’d try it.

This is my PM routine – rinse off makeup with warm water, apply 1-2 drops of Argon oil to my face & neck, clean with Clarisonic brush. After that I apply my Retin A, then 1 drop of Rose Hip oil and a few drops of YL Frankincense oil. I swear by dry oils from mature skin!!

    1. Be careful with the oils in the daytime, however, as they make your skin phot-sensitive. This is especially true if you;re also using Retin-A.

    2. Terri that sounds like a good PM routine!! I love the oils too and use them all the time but sometimes forget to put them on my face.
      Thanks for the info.

  25. I love the products from Become Beauty. They are only available through a consultant. Become Beauty products work from the inside out and are all natural without harsh chemicals. If you would like any samples to try, let me know. Here is their website so you can check out their products. http://www.becomebeauty.com/

  26. Cyndi,

Recently, I began using Murad skin care products and I love them! My skin is very sensitive so many products can be irritating, but Murad is working for me with no problems. If you are interested you might try Murad Resurgence Rejuvenating Lift for Neck and Decollete. The Murad website offers 15% off your first purchase. Ulta stores often have samples so you can try before you buy. Thank you for all your great suggestions!
Blessings to you during your move!

  27. I’ve never been a very loyal skin care customer and maybe it’s because I’m like you…I’m not sure about the products. Of course nothing is probably going to make our skin as good as it was—I was a huge sun worshipper, so I feel like I need to try to make up for it now!

  28. Dear Cyndi: I use, and love, StriVectin-TL! It isn’t too pricey and a little goes a fairly long way, but it does tighten the skin on my neck, the bane of my existence. Am still thinking of a neck-lift next winter, but for now, I’m happy with Stri-Vectin-TL and recommend it. Love and blessings💕💗💕. PS. Heading for Ireland tomorrow, and my neck cream is certainly making the trip with me.

  29. I have used Retin A 3 times a week for the past 13 years. I started out using it for acne but have found it works for wrinkles too. I started out on the 0.025% cream in my 30’s and my doctor recently increased my prescription to the next higher strength 0.05%. I’m in my mid-40’s now and the Retin A is the one product I can’t do without. It really makes a difference, once you get past the initial redness and peeling stage. Just start slow, be patient, and always wear sunscreen. I love the way it makes my skin look and feel. It’s not for everybody, but it sure works for me.

    1. I have retin a sitting in my cabinet that I am going to try. my neck is beginning to remind me of my mothers so I must reverse this process lol…. Do you use a moisturizer as well or what is your procedure?

      1. I have always had very oily, acne prone skin and have seen a dermatologist since age 12. I had painful cystic acne as a teen which thankfully left in my early 20’s. My skin is still very oily, even after Retin A all these years. I have never used a moisturizer due to my excessive oil and even eye creams break me out. I just use Cetaphil cleanser in the morning and nothing else. I use a Clarisonic and either Clinique foaming cleanser or Mario Badescu enzyme cleanser at night followed by Retin A and that’s it. If I add anything else I break out. I would love to have back all the money I’ve spent over the years trying everything under the sun. I think skin care is very individualized and the key is to find what works for you, which is unfortunately trial and error. My dermatologist says my Retin A,along with my sunscreen and that darn natural oil is what is keeping my skin looking young. I guess the oily skin is finally working somewhat in my favor!

  30. Cindy,

At night do you use your Retin A every night? If so do you put the night cream over it? Do you switch every other night?

  31. You might want to try a more non toxic line of products, I sell Pure Haven Essentials (formerly known as Ava Anderson Non Toxic). I love this product and it was really the first 100 % organic product I was introduced to. Since I started selling it, I have found other similar products but they are either a much higher price or they still have chemicals. I feel much better about putting this product on my skin! Check it out if you are interested! Thanks!

  32. There is a line of products this I use that I find @ Yes 😢Target .. It’s called # 7 it’s awesome , all their skincare is amazing and cheap .. Really works great !! Try it

  33. I’m sorry to say I wasn’t a face washer. Not until I turned 60 did I make begin a skincare routine. When I began using Redefine (dermatologists that created ProActiv) every morning and evening I was sold. I was amazed at the changes. These practicing dermatologists know what they are doing!

  34. If you are headed to Cincinnati for IKEA, you should make a full day and go to Jungle Jim’s too! That’s a fun & crazy experience too.

  35. I have always been a skin care “freak”! Even when I was a young teenager I loved taking care of my skin. I don’t think I have ever slept in my makeup, and I truly enjoy the evening ritual of removing my makeup and applying my nighttime products. While I use some of the same products you do, Cyndi, (CeraVe and Timeless 20% serum), I find the one thing that really makes a difference is my Retin A prescription from my dermatologist. She has prescribed an emollient Retin A for me and it truly does make my skin look more youthful.

    1. Liz I have an appointment on June 1st with my dermatologist and that’s one thing I’m going to ask her about.
      Thanks!!
      Cyndi
