Home Update-Exterior

Good morning! Today I’m sharing a home update and show you what we’ve been doing to the exterior of our home. We still have more to do, of course!

(I was editing these pictures at the airport on my way to Cuba and wished I had taken better pictures and more angles of our deck area.)

We have a craftsmen style home with stone and blue and gray siding. It has black shutters and the front door is painted red. I am still not sure if I’m going to keep the front door red or paint it black.

front of our houseWe have been working on the back porch. This was a picture taken before we purchased the home.

back of our house beforeThis is what it looks like now. We have not started on any landscaping in the front or back yet, we are waiting until late summer.

Back of Our HouseThis picture was taken before we stained the deck. The wood had been left untreated so we knew we needed to fix that right away.

porch-0This is a close up of what the deck looks like after we (and when I say we, I mean my husband 🙂 ) stained the deck.

We used Cobat satin in Moonlit Mahogany. I love the way it turned out and as you can imagine we are out on our deck area quite a bit!

We have some amazing sunsets!

  1. Hi Cyndi! Your new home is beautiful and so inviting. My two cents worth is keep the front door red! It’s your focal point and you want people to come to your door. I love it! I actually painted our front door bright yellow, while the shutters are hunter green. Enjoy making the home look like y’all!

    God bless!

  2. Your new home is lovely. You can feel the peacefulness coming through even in a picture. A front door should be the focal point, so I disagree on painting it black to match the shutters. Personally, I like red, as it is a happy color and so welcoming.

  3. Your home is lovely! Congratulations! May you have many happy memories there. I going to go rogue and suggest a wooden front door, though one with a window or a transom, rather than a single slab. It would tie in nicely with the stone on the fascia. Can’t wait to see what you decide.

  4. A lovely home! I vote to keep the red door. Wishing you many happy years there and thanks for sharing your world with us!

  5. It is truly a Beautiful & Happy Home! I grew up always hearing that “Nothing is more welcoming on a house than a Red Front Door”! It seems to fit your loving, giving, & welcoming personality. My oldest daughter is going to college this fall & we are fixing up a little house for her to live in. She actually just mentioned that one of the 1st things she wanted to do was to paint the door red – so everyone would know they are welcome! 😉

  6. Your home is so pretty! I love the craftsman style too. As a Southern California girl (born and raised) it is SO weird to see no fences or neighbors or concrete around your house! LOL! I would love to have all that land around me! Home renovations are a lot of work but so much fun as you work to make it reflect you and your life.

I vote for a black front door. 🙂

  7. Beautiful home! Since you are undecided about keeping your front door red I’d like to make a suggestion that could potentially save you time and money. Since you already have a photo of your home simply print a copy of the photo and cut out the front door, next using paint cards (the samples you get at the hardware/paint store) of the possible options you maybe considering as a new color–slip the color sample behind the photo so the color swatch is in the space where your door is. This allows you to see the door in a variety of color options without having to paint the entire door to see which one you like best. (And since it is a photo of your own home you’ll know exactly what the color will look like on your house). Now all you have to do is decide which of the new color options or the existing red is your choice. Have fun choosing! Blessings to you and yours.

  8. I am surprised by the number of votes for the red door. I vote for a BLACK door, it is much more current and would tie in with the shutters nicely. Your home is beautiful!

  9. Oh my gosh! What a beautiful home!! You will surely set the trend with this color for many women who want their husbands to paint the exterior of their house! Thank you for sharing! You are such a dear person!!

  10. What a beautiful home Cyndi!! I would spend hours sitting sipping tea on your back deck. I LOVE the red door, course red is my favorite color, we painted the door to our last house red. Thanks for sharing your home. Praying for you in Cuba!

  11. Thank you so much for letting us in/and on the outside of your home….it’s beautiful Cyndi. In my opinion…..LEAVE The DOOR RED!! What a statement!
All the best to your and prayers ……looking forward to your return and hearing about your trip.

    In Christ,
    Holly

  12. Just beautiful!!! I can see why you two purchased this beautiful home!! The land around it is incredible – I can envision lots of beautiful flower gardens and seating areas all over the place!! Praying for you both in your time in Cuba. I know the Lord will lead you to where you need to be and the lives that need to be touched by you!!

  13. Love it! I say keep the red door. It’s a great accent color and will look so good around lots of holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and 4th of July). Decorate around the door! I’m picturing lots of neat wreaths!

  14. Beautiful home. Please keep the red door. Gives contrast. You are lucky to have land around you. Summers are the best to be outside. We down sized and live in a 2 bedroom condo. We are able to do our own landscaping. We do not have to mow or put the mulch or shovel snow, we live in Michigan. Prayers are wilth you as you are in Cuba.

  15. The house is lovely – I’m praying you’ll enjoy for years to come.

I moved into a 50’s home that had been renovated inside, but minimal work done outside. I’ve done new storm doors, windows and have worked HARD on the yard as it’s been ignored for several years. Conquering the weeds here in the Texas Panhandle is fun, but starting to get it somewhat under control. I’ve loved bringing life back to the house with the outside flowers, trimming trees, etc. I recently added a metal sign that leads to the back yard that reads “Welcome to my Garden”…..it’s just lovely and charming. I smile every day when I drive into the driveway. New garage door is next!!!

  16. What a beautiful home. Lots of architectural interest! I vote for keeping the door red. It would be a nice pop of color. After you (Wayne) stained the deck, the stonework & lattice really stand out. If you’re into Barn Stars, maybe a nice one to fill in the large gable area on the back of the house. Or if its a bonus room, maybe a nice window can be added. I love that you have such open property, especially around the pool area. I know if you live in most residential areas, you have to keep a fence around the pool, for the safety of the children. But where you live, it has such a nice spacious look. Well done!

  17. Blessings to you and your family in your new home! May your home resound with laughter and be a place of peace and joy.

  18. How beautiful!!!! And I love all that land. It’s funny to me how flat it is. Everything is so hilly here. 🙂 That back porch would have sold me on it, for sure! xo

  19. I absolutely love your house and the land, wow!!! My husband and I are looking to move next year and we have started looking. We both love craftsman, and he would go crazy over the land. Your stain is perfect for your deck and I really love the punch of red color on your front door!!!

  20. Love your home. I can’t believe how lush and green your lawn looks. By now, our yard is burned from this heat we are having in NC. Have a blessed trip.

    1. Hi Susan,
We have had some hot hot weather here in Greensboro NC . I know what you mean about the yard being burned out.

  21. I absolutely love the craftsman style home and yours is gorgeous! I love a pop of color on a front door too, and red is a great color. I would say don’t paint it black , either keep it red or maybe a burnt orange. We are putting our home up for sale next month, and we want to build and downsize to a craftsman style ranch, unless we find one already built that we like. Thanks for sharing the pics, and have a safe trip!

  22. It’s truly gorgeous Cyndi!!
Instead of painting the front door black, have you considered paining the vertical columns of the back porch black (since you have the shutters on the front black & no shutters on the back?)
I love the front door as a punch of color—of course you could do a bright yellow or orange too?
Hope your trip is proving to be a memorable experience!

  23. If my vote counts…..I vote leave the front door red. There is just something welcoming about a red front door.

  24. Really lovely! I would leave the front door red, as black is not something I use often. Red is so much better for Christmas and other front door inspirations. Whatever you do, I know you will enjoy it. Here’s hoping your Cuban trip was wonderful!

  25. Your home is beautiful! I pray God gives you and your family many years there with wonderful memories together.

I like your red door but that may be because my front door is red too. 🙂
