Are Your Earlobes Showing Your Age?

While it’s well known that the condition of a woman’s hands and neck can reveal her true age, some might not realize that the appearance of our earlobes is another telltale sign. Oh joy!

Earlobes change because of the natural ageing process and constant exposure to the sun, especially since we forget to put sunscreen on our ears.

As collagen and elasticity decreases, earlobes often become elongated, saggy and thin. Heavy earrings are particularly hard on our ears as they pull the ear downwards and cause the skin to become weaker and stretched.

I noticed some change in my earlobes and particularly my left one. The hole in my left ear is lower than my right one (my ears were pierced when I was around 9 years old by a friend of our family).

Because it’s lower, it pulls more than my right one. At some point I might look into doing a surgery but I’m not there yet.

I recently purchased Lobe Wonder and I can’t believe how much it has helped. This is a clear adhesive patch that is applied to the back of the earlobe.

Ear Lobe WonderIt’s easy to apply and they really help your earrings not pull on your ear. I like to wear big earrings and these let me do that.

These earrings are slightly heavy and I am using the Lobe Wonder. If I weren’t wearing the Lobe Wonder it would have been pulling much worse. You would have seen the hole in my ear without the Lobe Wonder.

Also, when I wear stud earrings they stay up on my ear with Lobe Wonder and before they were hanging down a little.

(This outfit is one of my 25 Days of Winter Fashion and I’ll be sharing it this week.)

Fashion blogger, Cyndi Spivey, shares Baublebar Earrings for the holidays.Tips to Prevent Ear Lobe sagging:

-Never sleep with earrings.

– Don’t wear heavy earrings routinely. Save this for an important event where you will only wear them a few hours.

– Don’t forget your sunscreen!

– Apply your retinol cream to the lower part of the ear when you apply it to your face.

Have you noticed a change in your earlobes?

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this! No one I know is talking about this and I didn’t know what to do about this problem.

  2. Hi Cyndi,
I missed this one yesterday, but it is a very good topic. As a young child I was playing with cousins and sliced my ear at the top of the earlobe, so I’ve never worn any type of heavy earrings after getting my ears pierced and no wearing them to bed and so no sagging ear lobes, as of yet. 🙂 I just turned 49 and kind of looked my body over for signs of aging… LOL It’s getting close to that time. But being a predominately vegan eater has a lot to do with the outer aging on the face and over all body skin. Tip is to keep the body hydrated with foods that contain water.

  3. Get this. I didn’t give today;s blag much attention. I was thinking who has problems with their ear lobes…What are they talking about. Well…went out to diner with a friend of mine and one of my studs fell out of my ear with the back still on it. My friend, who’s a nurse said, ” I think your ear must have split.” It did not. I came home and ordered this product. I will never wear my earrings to bed again. Thank you!

  4. I’d be happy to have the ear lobe problem over my inherited “old turkey neck”. LOL!!! It runs in the women in our family, I’m very self conscience of the wrinkles and deep lines, anyone have any ideas to help that???

  5. Hi Cyndi- I have had ” thick ” ear loves my entire life. I always disliked them since everyone else had thin ear lobes. Once I began aging and seeing all the problems women have with this issue, I am grateful for my ear lobes. I’m so sorry so many have to deal with this. I have seen women with ear loves completely split ;-( I’m glad to see you can offer assistance to so many. God bless you sweet girl 🙂

  6. I couldn’t live without these! I’ve been using them for years now. I usually order mine from ebay. One of my ear lobes has completely split:( I will probably have to go to a plastic surgeon for repair but will have to figure if the cost is in line with my budget!!! The other one is also beginning to show some stretchiness as well. It takes a little learning curve to put these on in the right place and I still sometimes have to take off and reapply, but they are wonderful. Thanks to whomever invented them!!!

  7. I have both of my ear lobes repaired after one of them were ripped completely out and the other was stretched significantly. I wore clip on earrings for about 5 years (which are really hard to find). Finally, I visited a plastic surgeon and had them repaired. Best thing I ever did. Don’t know why I waited so long. I’m very careful about the types of earrings I wear now. Nothing real heavy. Never thought about treating my ears like I do my face. I do put sunscreen on them because my ears always burn.

  8. Same problem! Mine were pierced in my doctor’s office, and he did one too low as well. I’ve been using this product for a few years. They work for me!

  9. I’ve been using the ones from
Kendra Scott and they are wonderful! I’m sure these are the same thing. I can now wear some of my heavier earrings when I want to! 😊

  10. I decided years ago (I turned 50 this year) that I would not get my ears pierced. If the Lord wanted them that way I felt I would have been born with pierced ears. Now with two teenagers, I am so glad I didn’t. I think it would be hard to explain my position on body piercing if I had pierced ears! Don’t get me wrong, I think earrings are pretty but I just won’t do it myself. I tried clip-on earrings once…and that wasn’t for me either! Looking forward to Heaven where our bodies will be perfect!! May we all be faithful.

  11. Thank you for sharing this product. I will definitely give it a try. For 15 years I worked for the phone company, and I spent 8 hours a day on the phone, so I have one piercing hole that lower than the other ear. I stopped wearing my diamond stud earrings for the reason they didn’t hang evenly. I cant wait to try this product! I also love the earrings you are styling today. I think I need those too! haha

  12. Oh my goodness! That looks exactly like my ear on the box! I will definitely have to try those! I think the same thing happened to my ear… pierced with an ice cube but at a jewelry store! I wore heavier earrings and worked as a receptionist for awhile so always had the phone at my ear and I think it tore. I had no idea there was any such product so thanks for the info! Love your blog and I’m looking forward to your Winter Fashion series with Jo-Lynne. Have a great week!

  13. Also use Lobe Wonder and it works great – one reader says she wears them for several days…I may try that..thanks for the tip!

  14. Cyndi, thank you for showcasing this product. It works! I have the same problem as you – I pierced my own ears at age 16 and the hole in the right earlobe has always been a little lower. After years of wearing heavy earring (the ’80’s!), I was getting very nervous that my hole would rip and require surgery. However, I found this product at Harmon, and it is tremendous. I also find that I can wear one of the patches a few days before I have to replace it. So worth it, and my earrings don’t hang lopsided anymore!

  15. Had my surgery done 20 plus years ago and still going strong!:)….. My stretching got an early head start cause a classmate, who was a boy, tried to pull one earring off ( he thought they were clip-on’s and felt terrible). He didn’t tear right through the earlobe; but he made quite a dent. Big 80’s earrings finished the job he started years before. I live in Canada and naturally cosmetic surgery is not covered under our health care plan unless it is the result of trauma. Little boys yanking on little girls earrings is trauma; so, no charge for me:)!

  16. Have you ever checked out nickelandsuede.com lightweight leather earrings? My daughter & I love them! They are a bit pricey but great quality and customer service. They have an “earring of the month” for $18. They come in all the best, versatile colors and there are a few different styles, including leather cuffs and chokers. You should give them a try if you like to wear bigger earrings. You forget you’re wearing earrings!

    1. Hey Bev, I love her earrings, I don’t know why I haven’t tried them yet. I will definitely style them. I actually did a collabration with her a few years ago. She is super sweet!!

  17. I had never even thought about ear lobes! My ear lobes are very small so I wear mostly wire type posts, but twice recently I have lost the earring out of my right ear, and did not even notice where I lost it! 🙁 Maybe the piercing hole enlarging is the reason! Hmmmm…

  18. Thanks for posting this as never gave thought to my aging ears! Luckily I was told years ago to never wear earring to bed and that has helped me immensely. I have noticed women on TV wearing heavy earrings and honestly it is very distracting to see that love being pulled down. Thanks for the useful hints. Have a blessed day!

  19. My holes have been stretched and sagging for years. I gave up wearing heavy earrings along time ago and just stick with posts. I wear my hair short so I am fine with the posts and I have notice that the weight of a heavier earring bothers me now too. Glad you found something that works for you! Love your blog!

    Blessings,

    Beth

  20. I had the surgery at age 57 when my diamond post earring went through the hole and fell into my lap! I thought it would be an easy fix that my regular MD or dermatoligist could do, but I had to find a plastic surgeon. Shop around as there was a huge variance in cost. I paid $260 for one eat. The entire took about 6 months before I could wear a variety of earrings again.

  21. My story too!!!

My brother & I showed steers through 4-H & FFA for over 10 year and my Dad would only vaccinate, castrate &
dehorn the calves to the sign of the moon from the Farmers Almanac. It was on one of those work days that my Mom & I had our ears pierced with a veterinarian needle, ice & a piece of styrofoam. That was 50 years ago when I was 9 yrs old. I guess we were lucky, neither of us has had any problems, but when I started looking at my earlobes & how my earrings hang, I see they are sagging!

    Amazon has Lobe Wonder . . .1 box (60 ea) for $6.68 or 4 boxes (240) for $17.85.

Thank you Cyndi, I would have never thought to look for something like this!

  22. I never thought about my earlobes. I had mine done at a earring store back in the 70’s. My left one is lower too. Some earring that don’t have backs fall out. I am going to order some of these. I tend to just wear my silver hoop’s. Thanks for this post. I’ll start putting my moisturizer on my lobes.

  23. I’ve used this product for years and I can definitely say they are worth every penny-and btw they are not expensive (a nice added bonus)!

  24. That is exactly my ear piercing story…except my mom pierced mine!! It is the whole in my left ear that is lower too! I have always had to be careful with larger post earrings. I am buying these lobe wonders!!

  25. For some reason, I impulsively let our pediatrician (what was I thinking?) pierce my daughter’s ears. One ear looked good but on the other, he slanted the needle down. She wears only studs so the backer would show on the bad ear. I took her to Claires and the girl (not a doctor but knew what she was doing!) basically re-pierced her ear with the needle going straight back. That’s all we did to fix it. Maybe you don’t need surgery!

  26. I have noticed that on one lobe as well, this could be the answer :). I don’t usually wear heavy or large earring though as my face is small and they tend to over power me. I have worn the larger, plastic circle backs on studs for years and have found that really helps too. Thanks as always for helping to keep us looking as young as we feel on the inside…cuz I’m still 25! 🙂 🙂

  27. Beautiful post… beautiful quote. I’m one of those “upside of 50” who have never had their ears pierced. I have only just recently begun to consider it. Still pondering… the earrings always look so pretty and enhance your look.
