The Velvet Trend-Winter Fashion

Welcome back to my 25 Days of Winter Fashion! Today I’m styling a velvet skirt from Loft. The velvet trend is everywhere this fall and winter.

Before we talk about my outfit, let me say THANK YOU for all your sweet comments yesterday. I read each one and I wrote down all the styles you wanted to see during this series. I will do my best to get to all of them.

As we celebrate the season of thankfulness, I am thankful for each of you!

Now, let’s talk fashion. Remember yesterday I said I struggle with dresses and skirts being too short for me and this one may be a little short.

I sent a picture to my daughter last night and asked what she thought. She didn’t think it was but I’m still not sure. If you’re petite this skirt is going to be great for you!

I went with an opaque tight because of the skirt being shorter. I added this adorable sweater and a black choker. I’m also wearing these black booties.

They have miles of white fence and they add lights to all of them. It’s absolutely beautiful! Perfect for some holiday pictures.

I have ordered some different chokers and I’m hoping they will fit better.

It’s gold and silver and I love wearing it with my David Yurman bracelet (my bracelet was a gift from  my husband for our 25th wedding anniversary). I know Kate Spade will have a good Black Friday sale. I’ll be sharing all my favorite picks next Friday so stay tuned!

Beauty For the Heart~~“You are the light of the world–like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14

We talk a lot about shining our light here on Grace & Beauty. The Greek word for light in this scripture is phós and it means divine illumination and radiance.

How do we illuminate Christ during the holiday season? A lot of it is how we handle our daily life.

  • We are kind in the midst of a busy holiday season.
  • When we are around a difficult family member we show love even though it might not be easy.
  • We remember that all that we have belongs to Christ and we share what we have with those less fortunate.

Let’s let our light shine so others can see and know Christ.

Have a blessed day!

  1. I’m not receiving your emails regularly either. Nothing for today. Just checking, not complaining… making sure all is well and we can receive them! Thanks

    1. Hi Tara,
I checked your emails and they are being delivered but they are going to your spam or your junk folder.

If you could put cyndi@graceandbeautystyle.com in your address book that will help.

Also, you can try dragging the email from the spam or junk tab to the your inbox at that which will teach your account to prioritize putting those types of emails into your primary inbox in the future.

I hope that helps and thanks so much for subscribing!

  2. Hi. For some reason I am not receiving your emails consistently anymore. For example, I received Tuesday’s but not today’s. i went to your website a couple of days ago and signed up again, and even with that only received one for yesterday and none today. Has this happened to anyone else? Suggestions? Thanks so much.

  3. If the skirt were longer you’d end up looking frumpy, so keep it short with opaque tights. Just love the outfit. Embrace just how great you look! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  4. From years of ultra conservative corporate life, I always told my gal workers, if you are in doubt if your skirt is too short, or slacks too tight, or necklace too low….then it probably is.

I am no longer getting your daily posts, and I had been. How can I fix that, as I love receiving them.

  5. Cyndi, if anyone can pull it off, it’s you! It is cute! I applaud your style – you are always modest AND cute! With the dark tights, it’s doable, but I honestly think it’s too short. I feel women over 40 need to let go of mini skirts and bikinis, no matter how good you look. It’s just my two cents worth, but you asked 🙂 Love the coat, the sweater isn’t my style, but again, looks cute on you. Thank you for asking our opinion, it must be tough to get negative comments sometimes, even though they are not directed at you, just a particular piece of clothing. I sincerely enjoy your blog. PS I’ve picked up some great tips from you, so thanks again! I am a ‘young’ 60, with a slightly older body – LOL!

    1. I agree all around…the tights and the fact it’s monochromatic let you get away with it, but w/o the tights it would be a no-go in my opinion.

  6. I think the whole outfit is so cute on you. I was looking back today in the archives for an outfit you styled earlier. There is something wrong with the archives. It says Not Found, Error on all months I click on. Is this on my side or yours? Thanks, Cyndi

  7. I love this outfit on you!!! I don’t think it is too short with the black opaque tights. How does it look when you sit? I wish Loft offered this skirt in Tall sizes. I’m 5’9″ with long legs so I prefer a 21″ length.

  8. I love your blog & have been following since last spring. I’ve also purchased several items that I just love. Thanks for sharing & giving of your self to encourage women. I also use & sell Essential oils. (doTerra essential oils) Love them. Enjoy your day with your friend. God bless from Louisville Ky

  9. I struggle with feeling that some skirts and dresses are too short. During the winter I feel more confident when I have tights on with skirts and dresses. I think the skirt is fine and it looks great on you!

  10. well, I have to chime in on the short skirt. Having sat in the class in the round enjoyed by many Bible study classes, I can say that the length of the skirt would be distracting for other members of the class. Have you seen any of the panelists on news programs and wondered why someone isn’t whispering in their ears to do something about the skirt length ?? the outfit is quite attractive in a standing photo op situation but I think you might be able to assure yourself by sitting, bending etc in front of your full length mirror at home. Then you can feel confident that you not only look your usual attractive self but have all your bases covered.

I too am having to come to the website for my dailies after having found you in the junk mail a few times and now not finding you at all just as a few other readers have mentioned.

  11. I had to look twice when I saw you wearing a “puffin” sweater! I grew up on the east coast of Canada where the puffins live, although they are not a common sight. A few years ago, on a return trip to visit family, we spotted a cliff overhanging the ocean that was covered in puffins! What a beautiful sight. My boys were so excited to see them. During that visit, I bought a hand knit “puffin” sweater.

I have been following your blog for over a year and feel I’ve found a friend! Your style is so similar to my own. I look forward to see what you are wearing each day.

    Hugs, Jean

  12. Hi Cyndi, absolutely love your blog and even though I don’t comment often I do love your daily inspirations on fashion and life. I would like to know more about your thought on the Yoga pant?

  13. if I wonder if something is too short, I always think what would my pastor think about this? Since you are VERY close to your pastor, if he’s OK with it, I wouldn’t worry! LOL
You are so cute, you can pull off things that others can’t.

  14. I’m loving the velvet! I recently purchased two pair of velvet pants from Loft and they have become my favorite pants to wear.

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your post from last Sunday. “God sees the big picture” I’m going through a very difficult time with a relationship ending and I so needed to see this.

    Thanks for all you do.

    Patricia

  15. Hi Cyndi,
Love the whole outfit, I always prefer shorter skirts to long ones and they look super cute with thick opaque tights.
My OH always prefers me in shorter skirts and I’m going to be 53 tomorrow Ha! Going away for a couple of days
Which means packing which I hate, but at least with the car I can load it up,,
    Have a great Wednesday
    Nicky xx

  16. I think the skirt length is really cute with the tights. It really surprises me that at 5’6″ you have trouble finding dresses and skirts long enough, I thought that was an average height. At 5’9″ it’s been a problem I expect and am used to (I always check the hem to see how much I can add to the length with a false hem).

  17. You look fabulous, but I agree about the skirt length. It may look ok when standing, but I never feel comfortable when sitting in a skirt that is too short. The sweater is so fun for the season!

  18. The puffin sweater is adorable….just ordered one! I have wonderful memories of staying at Shakertown when my children were small. I love your , Grace and Beauty and Beauty for the Heart. Thank you for making my days even better!!!!!!

  19. I Love this outfit…it is also me! I think it looks great on you and the length with the opaque tights are perfect.

    Cyndi

  20. Love the shorter skirt with the tights!!! Such a cute sweater!!!! i think this is an out of the park outfit!!!! I’ll be checking out that skirt!!!!

  21. If a skirt feels short, even if you still have great legs, wear a matching opaque tight and heels. The unified color and the heels, elongates the leg and silhouette. You can’t go wrong.

    1. I agree. With the tights and heels the same color, the skirt looks perfect. I am still debating about short boots/booties. Haven’t bought a pair yet, but still thinking about it. At my age (62), I always have to think – is this look too young for me.

  22. Hi Cyndi. I have subscribed to your blog for a couple years and as of a week or two ago, I no longer get it in my email. I have re-subscribed quite a few times and it still doesn’t show up. Any suggestions? I really miss it and I google it but it’s so much easier on e-mail. Thanks

  23. You look adorable. I know that might not be the description you’re looking for, but you do. I think the skirt is perfect with the tights and very appropriate. You look “merry, cheerful & bright”! But if you’re not comfortable that will make you self-conscious. Deets on the bag please?!?!?!? Happy Holidays!

  24. I agree with you that the skirt is too short especially since you are feeling uncertain about it. Maybe you can find a longer one in velvet. Velvet is beautiful.

  25. Cute outfit. I love black too. I wish we could wear sweaters in Texas. But it’s still somewhat spring here. Thanks for the message and passage. Bless you.

  26. This is such a cute outfit. I don’t think the skirt is too short with the tights and boots, looks great on you! Have a great day!😊

  27. I will definitely be going to Loft in the next few days to try this on. I love it… Home run! You look Great! Thanks for the post and the devotional! Praying for you, I don’t know how you get it all done

  28. Cyndi, This outfit looks great on you! Wearing the opaque tights since the skirt is shorter than you prefer, is the perfect touch. What a cute sweater. The scenery is beautiful. My Tapered black top arrived yesterday. I tried it on last night, and I am very happy to report that it fits and I really do like it. I am looking forward to wearing it!

    Have a blessed day!

  29. I don’t think the skirt is too short, it perfect. How tall are you? I am 5’5 and feel I’m too short to pull it off. I do like the tights the same color. The sweater is so FUN. I am getting brave maybe I could pull this off.

Have fun having coffee. All my girlfriends work, so no coffee dates for me.

  30. I like the skirt. I think since you have tights on it’s perfectly fine. I always find that if I put a skirt on and feel uncomfortable in it, it’s too short. I love your coat too. I’m not sure I could pull off a choker necklace but it looks great on you. I think the last time I wore one it was the 70s and I was about 12 years old.

  31. This is such a fun outfit! I love it! The skirt is definitely not too short with those tights. ( I have an almost 13 yr old who’s 5’7″ so I’ve gotten good at saying “Nope, too short!” lol!)
    Tammy

  32. I ordered the outfit yesterday except the dress in red. I’m a Nurse Practitioner and it is hard to find comfortable yet professional attire. I started following your blog 2-3 months ago, mostly for fashion sense over 40 (closer to 50, yikes), but realized I need God more in the blog. I love the uplift it gives me every morning. Thank you!

  33. I think the length is fine, esp. with the black tights and boots – such a cute, fun outfit. Love that black coat too! I’m struggling with my “light” right now :-(…I’m working on it but feel like I’m fighting an uphill battle.

  34. I like shorter skirts! With the tights, this is pure perfection! I may have to run up to my Loft today and get this outfit! 😉

  35. I don’t think it’s too short and esp with the tights….for ME and this is just me….if I feel something is too short on me (since I’m 5 ft 7 1/2) I would tend to wear flats so….I would wear this skirt with the tights but I would add riding/flat boots instead but this combination looks great on you!

  36. Love everything about this outfit! The skirt is pretty short but with the tights, it looks amazing! Love the puffins and once again, looks much better on you than the model!

  37. I also think the length of the skirt is fine! Love that you wore it with the black tights. I got the same sweater a few weeks back. It’s still too hot to wear it in Texas, but thanks for the ideas of how to wear it? You look darling!

  38. I think the skirt looks fine, since everything is black. Cute outfit!
BTW I ordered those boots, in anticipation of them looking nice with the Glamour Farms dress. (Fingers and toes crossed!)

  39. I think the skirt looks great with the opaque leggings. Thanks for posting early too…..I love reading your blog with my morning coffee!

  40. My two cents worth: the skirt is adorable on you! It might have looked short with bare legs but the black tights are perfect!

  41. You look adorable. I think the opaque tights make the skirt length just fine 😉 and your puffin sweater… SO CUTE!
Have a blessed day. P.S. love your pics at this location!
