5 Winter Skin Care Tips

The weather outside may be unsightly, but your skin doesn’t have to be. Winter weather is not fun for skin so let’s talk winter skin care tips.

As soon as you turn the heat on indoors, the skin starts to dry out which steals moisture away from the skin every second of every day.

5 Winter Skin Care Tips Here are 5 Winter Skin Care Tips

1.  Exfoliate your skin.

We often forget to help the skin by sloughing off dead cells in the winter. Yet moisture can’t get in if the dead cells are too plentiful. It’s important to get rid of those dead cells by exfoliating.

I use a coconut oil body scrub, you can find the recipe here (I use Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil). This is an great inexpensive body scrub! Follow immediately with moisture to see a smoother difference.

2. Wash in Lukewarm Water

Hot showers and baths always feel good in the winter, but when you can, particularly when just washing your face or hands, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping as many oils away from the skin.

3. Moisturize

Your skin not only needs more moisture, but moisture right after you shower. Applying moisture to damp skin helps seal that dampness into the skin. Keep a bottle near the shower and at every sink and use liberally every time you wash.

I’m using this Nourish Organic Argan Body Butter. (This has a thick texture, more like coconut oil.)

4. Don’t neglect your home’s air

Heating systems dry out the air, so consider using a humidifier in your home, particularly in your bedroom, to put moisture back into the air and help prevent your skin from drying out.

I have been wanting to add this to our bedroom and I recently ordered this humidifier.

5. Drink Water

We tend to drink less water in the winter because we turn to hot drinks like coffee and tea, but don’t forget that your skin needs hydration from the inside, out. (Some debate whether drinking more water in the winter helps hydrate your skin but water helps with your overall health so it can’t hurt).

A little warm water with lemon (I use lemon essential oil everyday!) can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

6. Bonus! bareMinerals bareSkin Sheer Sun Serum Bronzer

If you feel like you need a little summer glow on your face this bareminerals sun serum is amazing! I recently added it to my foundation and it has helped add a warm wash of color to my skin. It is sunshine in a bottle!

I put my iT foundation on and then add couple of drops of this serum over my foundation.

  1. Cyndi, I have loved & followed your “fashion” blog. I respectfully challenge you to try one line of skin care. I know that you get payed to advertise and it looks like you have a treasure trove of products.

    1. I will always show and share different products with my readers to allow them to choose what they want to use. I try new products and share my opinions.

  2. I love my Rodan+Fields products for premium skincare. Anti-aging products by the Stanford trained dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, the same doctors that created the award winning Proactiv for the acne market.
I had sun damage and the Reverse product line literally cleaned the slate. There are options for many of the skincare concerns and essential products that include sunless tanner, moisturizers, patented AMP MD roller to help erase the lines/wrnkles of aging and so much more. Ya’ll can check out my website for more information! https://tracywelch.myrandf.com/

  3. These are all great skincare tips. I just recently made my own coconut oil body scrub and it was amazing! My skin gets so dry in the winter that it actually hurts, but using the scrub makes my skin smooth as silk. I think it would be good to use in the summer too, when we need smooth legs.

  4. I use my Clairsonic to wash my face everyday and I think it makes a huge difference in how my skin absorbs my skin care products and makeup application too. My skin feel fabulous!

  5. I’m 50+ and just received “Toss The Gloss” by Andrea Q. Robinson. Beauty Tips, Trcks &Truths for women 50+. Lots of product recommendations that don’t break the bank!

  6. Is anyone else getting overwhelmed? Ha Ha I can’t seem to narrow down products to use. I have never spent a lot of money on skin care, but know I need to add more to what I’m doing or just start all over. 🙂 Thanks Cyndi for starting the conversations.

  7. I live in a climate that can reach -20 and -30 C on a regular basis….I know dry skin.

I have started adding one drop of Frankincense oil to my serum and it has made a world of difference

  8. I have such terribly dry skin (am 50+), and I am a convert to the IT CC cream you recommend. Love the spf 50, but I find I use it even our dark, rainy days!

  9. Hi Cyndi. I wanted to mention how much I love Monat’s Rejuveniqe oil especially in the winter months. I add a drop of oil to my foundation and it provides lasting moisture throughout the day without feeling greasy. (I love my skin to look slightly dewy but not greasy.) Additionally, I use the Rejuveniqe oil under my eyes before bed and rub a drop on my eyelashes. I actually think it’s helping my eyelashes look thicker! Honestly the uses and benefits of the oil are endless. There are 101 uses listed on the Monat website (graceandbeauty.mymonat.com). The Rejuveniqe oil contains 11 unique molecular ingredients including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids which mimic the body’s natural oils. I could go on and on about how much I love this product! The oil is $99 retail, $84 for VIP customers, and $69 for market partners. One bottle will last forever! A bottle contains 650 drops!

  10. I am in love with Paula’s Choice skin care line and have used it for decades now. She has great moisturizers and I LOVE her face oil. It is a must for winter and keeps my skin glowing for travel!

    1. Thanks for sharing, Jenifer; I have been on the fence about going all in with Paula’s skin care line, but I am fond of what I have tried so far. I think it’s just bothering me that aging well costs so much. LOL. I mean her products aren’t terribly high, but when you add this moisturizer to that one and this serum to that exfoliator, it’s just a lot of maintenance to keep our skin nice. I’m writing this tongue in cheek – mostly. 😛

    1. It does come in one shade and you can mix it with your foundation. if you want lighter use one drop and then add drops if you want it darker.
      Hope that helps!
      Cyndi

      1. I was in Sephora yesterday and picked up a sample of liquid bronzer to add to foundation to make a pale one darker. I have a foundation from Lancôme that is too light but expensive and didn’t want to throw in trash so hopefully this will fix that mistake. Thanks for reminding me about products out there to keep us from looking pale, Cyndi!

  11. Thanks for all the great tips! It has been rainy and gray here in Knoxville too, and not really cold enough for the heat to run – what a difference a week made…a little over a week ago we had snow and very cold temps.
I do use a humidifer in my bedroom, and I have a humidistat too so I know what the humidity level is – inexpensive little device I purchased at Walmart I believe. Too much humidity is not good either. I do tend to use a bronzer year-round – it warms up my face. I can tell the days I forget to use it – invariably someone will ask me if I’m feeling ok – HA! I may have to give this one a try.

  12. Hi Cyndi………..I have added the big jar of CeraVe moisturizer to my skin care for the body at night to sleep in and my legs feel so much smoother. I also had the It – Feel The Moment serum primer in my drawer from summer that was too slick & made my skin oily looking in the heat. So I am adding one little drop of that with moisturizer or as the last step before Estee Lauder Illuminating primer. I have also been adding a tiny amount of cream moisturizer to my double wear foundation before applying with a brush to my face. I want to try your foundation because if it can do 7 things at once……..I want it! ha! I also like your idea of the sunshine in the bottle trick! Thanks for sharing your skin care tips!

      1. I love CeraVe Moisturizing Cream as a body moisturizer. It’s been recommended to me by a couple of Dermatologists and I’m sold! It goes on smoothly and locks in moisture while maintaining a protective skin barrier. Highly recommend this product especially in the Winter.

        1. Another fan of Cerave for dry itchy skin. Don’t just use it on your body; it’s an amazing face cream that helps with dryness and also wrinkles due to the ceramides. I use the thick cream as a night cream, especially under my eyes.

          1. I use the Cera Ve in the PM also for the face. I have sensitive skin from using retinol products so try to not push my luck , ha! I actually burned my skin from retinol one time last year and was horrified. I did read that also if you used a retinol product to use a product crème that contained ceremides for dryness after research. I use the Cera Ve eyecream also. Glad you liking this crème also Teresa and thanks for replying friend

      2. That would be the crème that would be called CeraVe PM for face and also have tried the night time restoring crème for face that is CeraVe also just to be clear as others may have sensitive skin like me too.

        1. Glad you all like the CeraVe also. I first heard of this fab crème in a tub from one of my walking buddies & she passed the tip on to me. It seems to be a favorite of a lot of people!

  13. Thanks for all of the reminders Cyndi! I humidify my home and drink lots of water. I’m also addicted to chapstick in the winter! The extreme cold of a couple of winters ago really took a toll on my hands so I’m actually more careful with them than my face!
