Casual Winter Outfit Formulas: Cardigan + Shirt + Jeans + Booties

Happy February! Jo-Lynne and I are continuing our casual winter outfits this week. These are for women who are looking for casual outfits for running errands or working from home (or weekend wear).

Before we get started,  I’m sharing a new trend with one sleeve rolled up and the other sleeve down. Kidding! I did that to see which one I liked and then forgot to pick one. You would think my husband while taking the pictures might notice, but no.

Anyway, this open front cardigan is from Gap and I thought it was a great cardigan for a casual look. It’s perfect for cold winter weather. Gap has 40% off your purchase with code Happy.

\The cardigan has a slight curved hem and is longer in the back.

Beauty for the Heart~~God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. Matthew 5:5

Some versions of this verse use the word meek vs. humble. Meek does not describe weakness. Instead it describes strength under control. As women who are believers we can be strong women but have control with our words and our actions.

We could certainly use some meekness in our world today.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Love the jeans and booties, but don’t like big earrings when there’s a lot going on near the neckline. Usually bigger earrings when the neckline is more open and simpler.

  2. Adorable outfit! I’m just not sure about the earrings…they look good on you but not sure I could get away with ones quite that big…but maybe I’ll go a bit out of my comfort zone and try some just a little bit bigger than my everyday silver hoops!

  3. I had to chuckle when I saw the outfit you were styling today. I wore an outfit over the weekend almost identical to yours. Maybe I follow your blog just a little to close..haha

  4. Great outfit! I think you and your daughter should do a fashion blog together for
Mothers Day this year, I think that would be so sweet seeing you both together.
    Have a wonderful evening!

  5. Cyndi–I didn’t realize your earrings were silver until you said so. I thought they were white and a bit stark. I do prefer your sleeves rolled up but straight down would be good if it’s extremely cold. Have a good day.

  6. Initially I thought you were serious about the sleeve rolling trend. Am I gullible?! Husbands don’t notice these things. He takes great pics of you though.

  7. Love this outfit, and like everyone else I like the rolled cuff. I also like the style and weight of the cardigan, It looks like a good weight, heavy enough to stay in place! And the denim shirt is perfect and I think I can get away with wearing that to work with black pants! Like you I think your daughter would write a great blog, she always looks amazing but it’s her heart that is more beautiful than anything! Thanks for this outfit, perfect for this time of year, and I like how you wore the shirt with the unusual collar on the cardigan.

  8. Like most I like the sleeve rolled and the blouse showing, as for the earrings, I agree with you that the contrast against your hair is stark and a bit distracting. I like the style of the jeans, and when the weather isn’t freezing I think the ankle showing is a good look – of course I could go bare legged most days because my temp runs WAY HOT – most in my office are comfortable and I’m sweating, or I’m comfortable and they’re freezing – Rarely can I wear clothes reflective of the calendar/season – ugh, so frustrating! I love all the pretty sweaters and jackets, but usually can’t wear them. I have so much fun with my daughter and I get a shopping day together – she’s 25, also has a great eye for fashion AND she keeps me age appropriate without being frumpy :). She also follows your blog and loves your style too.

    1. I’m with you Sharon… my temp is on the warm side too.. … i usually don’t even wear a coat to work and I’m in the northeast! ha! my hot flashes seem to be slowing down a bit though … have a blessed day 😉

  9. I read one of your comments about the earrings showing up too much but you liked the other color. I have noticed in Nickel and Suede’s ads that a majority of the time the larger earrings (the ones you’re wearing look like the large to me – I have the small) are worn with tops that don’t have a collar and a more open neckline. Have you tried that with these earrings? It still may be the color as you mentioned. I must confess I’m a bit addicted to their earring of the month sales!

  10. I love the cardigan and shirt. I like the sleeve pushed up better. Don’t feel bad my husband would not have noticed either. Tell your daughter she did great on helping you pick out an outfit.

  11. I hate shopping, but with my daughter I love it. She has such a sense of style (I do not), so she is great to help me pick out clothes. Now that she lives farther way, my husband has stepped in, and he is great. If it weren’t for them, I would never buy any clothes and wear the same thing to work all the time. The big challenge now – find a dress to wear for my daughter’s wedding. Nordstrom has been so helpful with helping me find some possibilities! And my daughter sends me links as well.

  12. Like it. I am trying to figure out why having the earrings show up is a negative.?? Isn’t that why they are worn ?
This has to be one of the best outfits. Blue will get me every time.

Have a great day and what a great Momma to be lending some good mommy daughter time while she and her hsb are dealing with their disappointment.

  13. I’m with everyone else, I like the sleeve that is rolled up. Just a nice, extra pop of color. I found myself closing one eye and holding my hand up in front of my computer to see which one actually worked better. LOL!
Thanks for taking time for us Cyndi with your blog and scripture! I look forward to it every morning.

  14. Love the cardigan and shirt. Not a fan of the jeans but think it is just my age. Cute on you but I would not wear. We never had winter in Savannah. Most days have been 70’s which is even warm for us in winter. But it has been nice. Just mostly transitional clothes.

  15. Cyndi, At least all men are alike – mine would not notice one sleeve cuffed up either, and he worked at a woman’s botique many years ago. But, it does let us see the difference a small change can make, so it is all good. I too, like the cuff of the top showing at your wrists, and I agree that different earrings would have improved the look.

    Have a blessed day!

  16. I have to agree with others who posted that I like this look with the sleeves rolled up the best. It adds that little extra bit of blue to the outfit, and it looks comfortable and casual. My daughter is still little, but I love times when we have our mother/daughter days, shopping or cooking together. Cherish these times with your precious daughter.

  17. For the record, Cyndi, I actually love that these pictures show the one-sleeve-rolled look, because it lets us see how much difference one detail makes. It gives us two posts in one!

  18. I like the sleeve rolled up the best. So fun when we get mother daughter time. I love shopping with my girls. Enjoy your day!

  19. I pick rolled up, definitely pulls the blue down to the midline and makes it come together. Not a fan of those earrings, they just contrast to much against your hair. I find I’m looking at those and not that beautiful face or gorgeous outfit, love the sweater. Have a wonderful day Cyndi, so glad you had time with you daughter.

  20. Hi Cyndi……….I thoroughly enjoy time with my daughter too.(and my sons) I like the sleeve rolled up as it shows more contrast to the sweater. ~Lisa~

  21. I have been subscribed to your blog for quite a while now, but have never commented. As much as I love the fashion, I love reading your mini devotional every day even more. I agree with the others that the turned up sleeve looks best. My husband lost his job of many years just before Christmas due to a company buyout, so clothes shopping isn’t happening for me any time soon. Please add our family to your prayers as we wait for God to provide a new job. Praying for you and yours.

    1. I would be honored to add your family to my prayer list. May God show up in a big way as he provides a job for your husband. Please keep my posted!!
      Be blessed,
      Cyndi

  22. You look great in most everything you wear, but the ankle area and earrings look distracting. I’d like to see this outfit with knee high boots and smaller earrings.

    1. Sher I agree. I told my daughter I have tried twice to wear these earrings and the color does not work for me. I have a gold pair and I love them but the silver is too contrasting against my hair.
The jeans and boots,,,I was trying to wear a less expensive jean. The ones I actually wore with this outfit were more expensive and I feel looked better with the boots. My daughter agreed but I was trying to show a less expensive pair and I don’t think they worked as well. 🙂

  23. LOL sounds like most hubby’s…mine included!
Our daughters keep us young. I love shopping with mine and getting her opinion on my choices because she tells me like it is, “No, mom that looks too old for you.” I like to hear that… LOL
I love the cardigan,it’s perfect for our weather here in KY.
My daughter is getting married!!! and she wants her mommy to be her wedding planner, as long as I do what she wants… LOL I’m loving it!!
    God Bless
    You look lovely today!!

  24. Cute on you! I do the sleeve roll too. Looks more jazzy I think. Still warmer here…….not complaining though , I love it!

  25. Love this outfit! I really like the sleeve rolled over the sweater. Seems to tie the look together even more.
    Have a blessed day!

  26. Bwaha! Hilarious about the sleeves. I guess that tops my blush debacle. You can’t fix sleeves in PicMonkey!

  27. I’m glad I’m not the only one that does that kind of thing with the rolled up cuffs, Cyndi! LOL
Since you’re showing it both ways, I’ll give my two cents—I like it rolled up. It gives a little more color to the outfit, I think!!
We’ve had warmer weather here this week, so I could wear my jeans & ankle boots without tights underneath! Otherwise I get way too cold!!
