Makeup Tips For Women Over 40

Today, I want to share some makeup tips for women over 40.

As we age, our skin changes. What might have worked for us in our 20s and 30s may not work for us in our 40s and beyond.

There are several things we can do to help us look fabulous after 40!

  • Moisturize! I can’t tell you how important it is to moisturize. As we age our face usually becomes dry so we need to moisturize to help our makeup go on smoother. There are many moisturizers to choose from so find one that works for you and your skin.
  • Use a primer before applying makeup. A primer helps prevent makeup from seeping into fine lines. I’ve talked about using a primer before. I use Mary Kay’s foundation primer and I love it!
  • I’ve shared this tip before but use cream-based blushes and eyeshadows. Powder eyeshadow and blush will bring more attention to the wrinkles on your face. Cream-based products help hide the fine lines around your eyes and cheeks.
  • Use neutral shades. Dark shades don’t look as good on older women. These women are all over 40 and they’re wearing soft, neutral shades of color on their face. Nothing too bold!

  • Use a lip plumper and lip gloss. (I have not tried a lip plumper yet but I’m going to, so I’ll let you know what I think.) Our lips appear thinner as we get older. Lip plumps and gloss give our lips a fuller appearance. I always wear lip gloss with my lipstick.
  • Fill in your eyebrows. DON’T DRAW YOUR EYEBROWS ON WITH AN EYEBROW PENCIL. This will age you and doesn’t look attractive. You can use a pencil but make sure you just add color, not a line. I personally prefer to use eyeshadow with an eyebrow brush. I think this looks more natural.

I hope these tips will help you to feel and look more beautiful as you age. We’re all aging so we might as well age gracefully, right?

Do you have any other tips to add to my list? I’d love to hear from you!

Beauty For the Heart~~This morning my devotion reminded me that in my weaknesses Christ’s power is perfect. With Christ we can do more than we could ever imagine. Do you have something ahead of you that you know you can’t do on your own? Remember Christ dwells in you and His grace is sufficient! And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”  Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB)

Have a blessed day!

  1. I just discovered you Cyndi and love your tips. Although I update my makeup regularly, I realize by reading this that I need to make some major adjustments. I am getting ready to place a rather large makeup order as my 10 year old got into it and messed up some of it (UUGGHH). I am so glad that I read this article before placing the order. I love dark eyeshadows for the outer v, and was going to order several, now I will have to rethink that. Just my opinion, but I think some women age themselves by not wearing the correct shade of foundation, and not blending it into the neck. I swear by Guerlain Meteroite peals as a finishing powder, was wondering if you have ever tried that? I must say that I feel I am pretty informed about cosmetics, but never thought that now that I am 44, maybe I should tone it down a bit. I guess time does march on!

  2. Great post! What I need to know is what would be the best foundation for me. I am 41 with mildly dry, reddish skin and in the summertime, I sweat a lot always starting at my head (thanks mom!). I’ve always had a problem keeping makeup on and would prefer a lightweight, but somewhat matte finish to cover up the redness on my cheeks. Any suggestions?

  3. Aw, this was a very good post. Taking the
time and actual effort to generate a really good article… but what
can I say… I hesitate a lot and never manage
    to get anything done.

  4. Good information. I haven’t tried the cream eye shadow and blush trick, but have noticed the little lines around my eyes. Think I’ll give it a try.

  5. Hi Cyndi thanks for your useful makeup tips for the women over 40 years old. I want to add a few more things for the readers that the lashes of the aged women start to thin over time. To add fullness to the lashes, wiggle in black powder eye shadow into the roots of the lashes using a flat angle brush. Curl lashes and apply mascara beginning as close to the root as possible and wiggling your brush up and out. Moreover, I like using a cream blush on more mature skin because it’s more hydrating and it looks more natural. If you do decide to use cream blush, remember to do it before you set your foundation with powder. As skin color fades you can change your hair style. When you change your hair style or color, you need to re-think your makeup. Because if you lighten your hair you probably want to soften your makeup.
I am a new makeup artist and still learning at a make up school which is the leader in training makeup artists. So if there are any mistake please advice me.

  6. Cyndi – OK…so is a smokey eye too much for me? I mean, you said that wearing too dark colors don’t look good on older women. I’ve thought about doing a smokey eye cause I go to a lot of fancy events with my hubby and would love like that. Also, I’ve never tried cream eye shadow – haven’t thought much about that before! You gave me some good ideas!

  7. Thanks Cyndi! My daughter is big on makeup especially since she will be turning 30 this year (GAAAAA I have a 30 year old daughter?!?!) And she suggested I retire my eyebrow pencil for the eye shadow tip you have her today and it looks so much more natural then the pencil. I haven’t tried the lip plumper yet but think I’ll just wait for your review on that one too. Love that you are able to share so many wonderful tips with us 40-ish gals that still keep us looking young and fresh not dated and looking like we are trying too hard to keep our youth. Blessings!

    1. I have red hair and invisible eyebrows. I do a soft line underneath, then color into the brow and comb up and out……this blends the line into the color, and strengthens the brow line a bit. I can do this and a bit of a light shadow under the brow with nothing else and it looks fabulous, soft, natural and defining with being all HELLO DOLLY!
