{Day 7} Beauty For the Heart~Passing On Our Faith

Today is Sunday so instead of talking about outward beauty, I want to talk about inward beauty.

Last week I shared with a group of bloggers the importance of passing on our faith. I used the example of my Mom, who passed away to gastric cancer in 2009, to share how important it is to leave a legacy of faith.

We all leave a legacy but it’s up to you, what legacy you will leave.

The 4X100 relay is one of the most spectacular sporting events you can watch. Four individuals consecutively make one trip around a quarter mile track at a full sprint in less than forty seconds, and in the process they pass a small metal baton to each other.

It is the consummate team effort. The four fastest individuals in the world can be disqualified if they fail to pass the baton successfully.

Such was the case for both the U.S.A. men’s and women’s relay teams at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. They failed to pass the baton, and it dropped to the track. Consequently, they were disqualified.

The important part of this story for us is: They failed to pass the baton!

Like a runner passing a baton in a relay race, we are responsible for passing along the baton of faith.

Scripture gives us many examples of people who passed the baton well, I’ll share a few:

Moses passed the baton to Joshua.

Deuteronomy 31:7-8, Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Paul passed the baton to Timothy.

2 Timothy 2:1-2, Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. Paul is passing the baton to Timothy and asking Timothy to pass the baton to others.

The perfect example of passing the baton is Jesus to the disciples:

Matthew 28:19-20, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Obviously we can learn from all these examples about how to pass the baton of faith. But I want to share a personal testimony of how Mom passed the baton of faith to me.

Are you striving to pass on the baton of faith to those around you? Join me next Sunday as I share my Mom’s testimony with you!

Have a blessed Sunday!

  1. Hi Cyndi 🙂 Loved your post yesterday… and look forward to hearing about your Mom again! My parents took a courageous step of faith 11 short years ago and because of this we know salvation today and have a life of joy and peace that we could have never had otherwise! Thankful for my parents “passing on the faith”. Makes me very aware as a young parent now to set the standard of Christ in our home and pass it on to your lil sweethearts. (will share my story by email with you some) 🙂 Have a wonderful week… enjoying a warm and cozy day inside today… it’s Thanksgiving here!! 🙂 love you!

  2. Deut. 31:8 has been my life verse for 40+ years and I’ve quoted it to myself many times . . . always a blessing!
