Maxi Skirt Fashion For Women Over 40

You’ve probably noticed all the maxi skirt fashion for spring and summer. Some of you have emailed me and asked if women over 40 can wear them. Can I just say “Yes!” This is a great trend for women over 40!

The key is knowing how to style them for your body type. If you are thin with slender hips you can wear them with your shirts tucked in or tied at the waist.

But if you’re like me, and you’re curvy in your hip area then it’s better to leave your shirt out (this is my opinion). If I tied a knot at my waist, it would accentuate my hips and they don’t need any accentuating!

You can’t see my shoes but I wore black sandles. I also added my jean jacket because I wore this to church and I felt I needed to cover up a little.

Lastly, if you have some extra weight in your stomach area, you can wear a looser fitting blouse over your maxi skirt.

Have you tried wearing a maxi skirt this spring? How do you wear your skirt?

  1. Hi Cyndi, I really like the diagonal black and tan maxi skirt you’re wearing in this pic and I’m going to try to find the identical skirt by Mossimo. You and I are the same size and body type so I was wondering if you could tell me what size you bought this in. Thanks so much!

  2. Hi miss Cyndi,
I love your maxi skirt and I agree with the shirt not being tucked in.
Sorry to say, I don’t own a maxi skirt. I have always said, that when I get rid of my “spare-tire” at my middle, that I will buy one. HA HA
I am 45yr old and 5′ 5″ tall and at 160 pounds I have a shapely body shape with the weight mostly at my middle that would not look good in a long skirt. But soon I promise that I will buy one and try it on….you are an inspiration to me, miss Cyndi!

  3. Hi Cyndi

Today is my birthday. I’m 56! Last month, I received my first stitch fix box and there was a maxi skirt in it. Black with red horizontal (gasp!) stripes and stretchy cotton to boot (I’m 5’6″ and curvy too). I took one look at it and said ABSOLUTELY NOT!! I was shocked when I tried it on. It was one of the two pieces that I kept from the box.

I wore it the first time for a meet the parents dinner we were hosting at our home. I already had a pair of gold, chunky jeweled, sandal wedges, so I also kept a gold necklace from stitch fix, and bought black and gold hoop earrings. Since it was just past Labor Day and still beautiful and warm in the San Francisco Bay area, I wore it with a v-neck, short sleeved, black ruched tee-shirt that was extra long and covered my belly. When my daughter-in-law walked in, she LOVED it! Always good to get the daughter-in-laws approval. I also got approval from the future daughter-in law. Since then, I have worn it several times and it’s been a life saver.

We were invited last minute, aboard the Acania ( Al Capone’s old restored boat) to watch the final race of the America’s Cup (Oracle won, yea!) but panicked when I had to figure out what to wear. Black and red are great nautical colors, so I wore the maxi skirt, added a white collared dress shirt with tiny black polka dots and a gray, v-neck, boyfriend sweater. My shoes were the only thing I needed to buy. I splurged and bought “Sperry” silver, Maya flats.

For my birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to Lake Tahoe. I packed the maxi skirt and wore it last night for wine out on the deck overlooking the lake and dinner at Sunnyside Resort where we are staying. I wore the silver flats, the black, ruched tee-shirt (it’s still warm in California) and added a gray cardigan for later in the evening.

Sorry this is so long-winded, but I just wanted to say, that older women CAN wear maxi skirts, so don’t be afraid to try it. You just might be pleasantly surprised. I agree, it has to be topped right for your figure type, but it can be done and it’s so comfortable!

Oh, I forgot to add, that I do wear shapewear underneath the skirt, just to keep everything in its proper place, and most especially because it’s a clingy skirt, but they came in handy on the boat and last night in Tahoe, as the shapewear helped to keep my legs warm too.

  4. Love your blog and your tribute to your mom. I am so happy to find a Christian oriented fashion blog. Love maxi skirts. I wear mine several ways to work, church, everywhere. They are so versatile and comfortable.

  5. Thanks for the style advice. I have been wanting to try a maxi skirt for a couple of years. I am 5’4″ and they just drag the ground on me! I am going to try one with wedges and a top tied at the waist. Great idea! Thanks and blessings, Susan

  6. That would have looked bad on me too. Peplum tops are tricky! I’m 5’6″ and curvy!
    🙂
Thanks so much for stopping by and I’m so glad to meet you,
    Blessings,
    Cyndi

  7. I really want a Maxi dress. I actually think they would look better on me. I found one I liked at Gap but it was a little too pricey. I’m still looking!!
    Thanks for stopping by Gina!
    Blessings,
    Cyndi

  8. Becky I forgot to mention where I got the skirt. It was Target, and I think it was &19.99. Perfect for my budget! Thanks so much for stopping by!
    Blessings,
    Cyndi

  9. Love your maxi skirt, the whole outfit is perfect. I think maxi skirts for women over 40 are great as long as the woman is about 5’4 and over. I’m 5’2″ and tried on a maxi skirt; can I just say… “dumpy”? I looked like a gnome! Like the other “to be avoided” styles for the very short woman, I think the maxi skirt should be added to that list.

  10. Cyndi,

You look so cute in the maxi skirt. I have been on the lookout; unfortunately, I haven’t seen one. I just ordered a maxi dress from Old Navy, but I still would like one or two maxi skirts. Did you buy yours from a major retailer?

    Thanks for sharing.
    ~Becky

  11. Hi Cyndi.

Love your maxi skirt! I don’t have a maxi skirt, but I bought two maxi dresses. One is black with a little bit of gold thread on the tie. It is a halter style.

Thanks for sharing. I hope you have a great week!
    Gina

  12. I also wear a long shirt with my maxi. Need to cover the hips! But the maxi is so comfy that I would buy more. I only have 1 right now.

  13. I love your skirt. I am in my early 50’s and I bought a maxi dress that does touch the floor a little bit. Even in a petite size. Mine is low in the front so I wear a cami under it and short sheeve shurg over it. I was surprised to see that it looked very flattering on me.

  14. Hi Cyndi! You look too cute in your maxi! I’m only 5’2″ and curvy. I tried on one at Anne Taylor with a peplum top last week. Let’s just say it was BAD:) So, I pretty much decides the maxi skirt was not for me. I do love maxi dresses and have two of them both of them are petites. I don’t always wear petite sizes and sometimes find the petite fit is just “off” even though I’m short. In maxi dresses, however, only petite will work! Thanks again for your great blog! I read your thoughts and ideas every day and feel almost like I’ve made a new friend:) Blessings! Krista

  15. LOVE maxi skirts!!!!! I wear them all the time and love wearing them with a tank and jean jacket!!!!….so cute!!! BUT…. I like them really long and I’m 5’6 so if it doesn’t touch the ground I feel dorky in them..so they have to drag a bit!!!! 🙂

  16. Your skirt looks good! I have a diagonal black and white stripe but haven’t worn it. Also got a summer dress last year but didn’t get it out. I take them off every time I put it on! Seems like the extra material swishing around mt legs is annoying. Need to actually give it a try! Also, like your cover up in church comment…….I feel the same way! That is what light jackets and sweaters are for. I grew up that it was inappropriate to wear some things to church.
