Building Your Fall Wardrobe {Little Black Dress}

31 Days of Fall Fashion & Beauty Tips

It’s Day 8 of my 31 day series and we’re Building our Fall Wardrobe. Today, it’s all about the little black dress!

Building Your Fall Wardrobe {little black dress}

The “little black dress” is a closet staple, and should be made of a sturdy but lightweight fabric . Avoid heavy wool fabrics that counteract the slimming effects of the color and limit wear during the warmer seasons.

This dress from Jessica Quirk from What I Wore is a great little black dress. It’s light enough to wear during the warmer months but in cooler months could be layered with a cardigan or blazer.

I have a little black dress I wear in the winter months but because it has a puffy sleeve it’s hard to layer with a cardigan. I’m going to purchase another little black dress that will work better for layering during the cold winter months

Here are some little black dresses that I like. Some have a shorter length but would work with black tights. (There’s a brown one in there, but it comes in black :-))

I’m wanting to organize my closet and I’ve found a couple of apps that I like and I think they would help organize my outfits. Have you tried any apps that you like?

1. Closet App-Access your closet on the go! Plan ahead and create outfits for events and day to day life. Use the calendar to keep track of WHAT you wore WHEN and WHERE. Prepare a packing list for your next trip from anywhere!

2. My Fashion Closet-My Fashion Closet to make picking outfits more fun, easy and organized! Start by taking a picture of all the clothes in your closet including tops, skirts, pants, dresses and shoes. My Fashion Closet then organizes your clothes such that you can easily scroll through all your clothes while mixing and matching different pieces.

Beauty For the Heart~~I saw this verse on a friends fb page. It’s a promise that is so sweet from the Lord. “In the same way I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born,” says the Lord. Isaiah 66:9. If you’re going through something difficult, there are blessings just around the corner!!

Have a blessed day!

  1. I finally found my “little black dress” this summer, and it’s the exact same one as Jessica’s in the first pic you posted! 😀 (Only I found mine at Goodwill!) Just found your series through the #31Days hashtag on Facebook… (I’m blogging for #31Days as well, on #31daysofcoastalstyle (http://www.aheartfulhome.blogspot.com). Now following your blog, and reading through all of your posts 🙂 Love your focus on honoring Christ through classy dress! God bless!

  2. Try Chicos! You’ll love the look and the styles are truly one of a kind
    Thanks for all the suggestions. Love them!

  3. I have a knee length black travel dress that I wear frequently. It doesn’t wrinkle easily, so I can cram it in my suitcase or bag. It is easy to dress up or down. The only bad thing is that it has long sleeves, and I wish I had gone with 3/4 lengths sleeves.

  4. too hard a decision…I love them all. OK, maybe I REALLY love the wrap style; it’s a good look for my frame. I have a few LBDs all of which are short sleeved except one.. One is a stretch cotton and the others are wool jersey or wool challis. I really like the lightweight wool as it’s three season. It’s also a wonderful fabric if you go from hot/sweaty to cold and chilled as it wicks away moisture and still insulates when wet, unlike cotton and most synthetics. I also love charcoal and navy, but sometimes only black will do! The sleeves on you dress are charming.

  5. Hi Cindy, I’m loving your series this month. I’m working on my closet basics after losing more than 40 pounds last year. I pretty much need everything. My LBD was an awesome find at a consignment clothing store this summer. It’s a designer name, sleeveless, versatile- and only $14. I wore it to church a couple of times this summer, but I think I’ll get more use from it now that it’s cooler.
    Looking forward to the rest of your series. I need to stay focused when shopping.
    God Bless,
    Kris

  6. Hi Cyndi.

    I love LBD dress #6 in the group. I’ve been looking at some online lately. I don’t like dresses that hit below the knee of me, as they then seem to much for my frame. Since I love boots, I’ll probably be wearing a lot of black dresses with tights and boots…both knee and ankle types. I’m also looking at over the knee boots. Are you going to do a post for us that are over 45 and whether or not we can wear the over the knee boots? 🙂

    Thanks for sharing. You always look beautiful.

    Gina

  7. I love your black dress and tights! Would you be able to wear “ankle shoes” with dresses and black tights or would that look weird or frumpy? I love your outfits and think “you” should be my Stitch Fix person and just send me whatever you buy for yourself !! I’m not good at putting things together. Love the photos and suggestions, this helps a lot.

  8. You looks so pretty in that dress Cyndi. It’s very flattering on you. I don’t have a little black dress because I really don’t enjoy wearing black on top. I do have a navy dress that works the same way.

    Question – have you noticed all the faux leather jackets that are out this year? They are so reasonably priced and I’m thinking of getting one.

  9. I have a casual one that I got this summer and wore with shrugs/cardigans but I need a more dressy one. I’ll be looking. I like the really simple ones but I would want three quarter length sleeves. I love yours but I get that the puffy sleeves hinder layering. I want to try one of those apps for sure!

    Love all your suggestions!

  10. My little black dress is actually navy! Navy is a better color on me and it’s the dress I wore for my daughter’s wedding. I keep my eyes open for another less dressy black dress. Because I have a warm skin tone I wear gold jewelry and warm colored accessories with black and also with my white shirt. I’m going to check out these apps, they sound like a fun way to make outfits.

  11. You are doing a great job with this series Cyndi! So true about the LBD! Love adding a pinch of color with accessories like you did!! Blessings

  12. First, that Bible verse is such a blessing! I can look back & see where that very thing is so true! God is so great! Second, great little black dresses! I just received mine in the mail yesterday- I purchased one online from Target. I had really gotten away from wearing dresses (some weight gain) but you’ve helped me see ways I can wear them again. This series is so fun…I look forward to it every day!

  13. Nope… but I’ll be watching to see what you come up with. Oh, I have two LBDs… one is an old workhorse that is too big and outdated and the other is embossed with gold and sooooo not me… but it fit off the rack and was on sale.

    I need time to purge my closet of just those kinds of burdens and only keep what I love, but I do have a life that requires at least one LBD at the ready…

  14. The Closet app is amazing! It’s easy to catalogue your clothes & outfits, plus it’s easier to come up with new outfit ideas. Love your website!! 🙂 I’m enjoying this series!

  15. Love your little black dress…..You look gorgeous in it!!! Love how you paired it with black hosiery and shoes and some color in the necklace!
    I have three little black dresses myself. Two are sleeveless, and one a 1/4 sleeve. One is a little heavy, slinky material and one of cotton and one with a little spandex. The sleeveless dresses I love to pair with a shrug and tall black heel boots in the winter.
    Can’t wait till day 9 !
