Styling A Maxi Dress From Kohl’s

I was recently asked to style a maxi dress from Kohl’s. I love maxi dresses! I actually like them better on me than I do a maxi skirt. I have a couple and when the weather gets warmer, I’ll be wearing them.

Here’s the dress from Kohl’s. It’s Peter Som for DesigNation Striped Maxi Dress. It has great reviews and is on sale for $54.

Here’s how I styled the dress.

The great thing about a maxi dress is it covers your legs if you don’t like showing them (you don’t need pantyhose!). They’re also very comfortable.

Do you like wearing maxi dresses? Will you be wearing them this summer?

Beauty For the Heart~~ Today is a special day in our house for two reasons. My son, Cory Douglas, is getting sworn in today as an attorney in Kentucky. He is already an attorney in Ohio but can now practice in Ky. too! Yay! If you need a smart and handsome attorney I know one! 🙂

It’s also my daughter Courtney’s birthday!! We are so excited to celebrate with her. We love her so much! She has been through quite a bit this last year but she has persevered. God has been so faithful!!

This is the verse that makes me think of Courtney, she loves the word HOPE!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

Have a blessed day!

  1. Congrats to Cory and happy bday to Courtney! What a blessing all in one day! Maxi dress looks cute. I haven’t worn one in ages. Maybe I’ll give it a try if our weather ever gets warm enough 😉

  2. Happy Birthday to Courtney! Big congrats to Cory! What great things to celebrate in the family today. I hope this coming year holds many blessings and opportunities for both of them.
I love the maxis!! I wore a maxi skirt, with a white t-shirt and scarf to my granddaughter’s band concert last night. It was so comfy and I felt very in style. I have 2 maxi dresses and would like to pick up 1 or 2 more. I just love wearing them in the warmer weather. Loved the way you styled the Kohl’s dress. I picked up a sleeveless denim jacket last year that I love to wear. I’ll give it a try with my maxis. Have a wonderful day, Cyndie! God bless you and your sweet family.

  3. I love maxi dresses, but am always concerned that I may be too short for them – I am 5ft4 so tend to stay clear of patterns and opt for the black maxi with bronze slip on sandals, which team together nicely. And, for cooler times in the day I throw on a 3/4 sleeve black cardi. Congratulations on your son! You deserve to be a proud mom. My son was recently sworn into the RAF and I felt immensly proud of him.

  4. I love the look of a maxi dress, but have generally seen them on younger gals. I’m in my 50s, 5’5′, and a size 6 or 8. Do you think I can wear a maxi dress or skirt gracefully?

  5. Theresa, I am also 5’2 (and 1/2) and I love maxi dresses. A few tricks I have learned are;
    1. Choose a dress that is cut close to the body as opposed to something with a lot of volume.
    2. An empire waist helps visually elongate the body.
    3. Comfy platforms will add height.
    4. Avoid horizontal stripes (except chevron) and large patterns.
    5. A shrug or bolero length jacket/sweater.
Hope this helps; there are a ton of choices out there so give it a shot.

  6. A very special day indeed! 🙂
You styled the maxi dress perfect. I really like maxi dresses and skirts with denim jackets.
    Thank you Cyndi

  7. I want to wish Courtney happy birthday and congrats to Corey. You have beautiful children. I love maxi dresses as it covers many bad places.

  8. I love maxi dresses, they are so cool and comfortable and can be dressed up or go casual. I like how you styled this dress, pulling the coral from the dress into the necklace and bag. keeping the rest of the jewelry minimal since the dress is a little busy to begin with and the nude sandals so as not to create a stopping point for the eye. I do like a denim jacket with maxis; however, with my petite stature of 5’2-1/2″ I prefer a shorter jacket (got mine at F21) as it helps elongate me whereas the waist length jacket visually cuts me in half, making me appear block-y. A shrug is perfect for dressing it up a little or in warmer weather.
    Birthday blessings to your daughter.

  9. Cyndi, I know you’re one proud mom today!! I’m so glad for Cory. He’s worked hard to get to this place! I’m betting your dad is just busting his buttons. I know Cory holds a special place in his heart.

And what a great photo of Courtney! She’s such a beautiful woman (like her mom!). I’m so glad she’s had you and Wayne as she’s walked through this past year.

This maxi dress is cute, I must say! For some reason I just don’t like the maxi style very much, which is odd considering my difficulty with my legs. Maybe it’s because I only ever see younger women wearing them–I tend to think of them as a great style for young moms. I must say, though, that I think maxi dresses are cuter and much more flattering to most women than maxi skirts. Of course you’ve styled this dress well!

  10. I have a few maxi dresses and plan on wearing them this summer. Love the way you styled this one from Kohl’s.

Happy Birthday Courtney, and congrats to Corey. Have a great evening Cyndi! Thanks for sharing.

  11. Love your blog! I am 5’2″. Is there hope for me in wearing a maxi dress? They always seem to be for taller women.

  12. I adore maxi dresses!!! Maxi skirts too. Comfortable, cool, stylish and modest. Love live ’em!!!

  13. I love maxi dresses but not on me. I’m too short and its too much fabric. My legs are my best feature so I don’t want to cover them! lol
    Congratulations to your son!

  14. I love maxi dresses – – they can be so slimming. Plus, they are perfect for those of us who want to wear sandals and don’t want to show our legs.

Also, LOVE that you introduced us to the Charming Charlie’s site. So many choices in so many colors and so reasonable. Thanks.

  15. Happy family celebration day! Love the pixs of the birthday girl…will say a prayer that her new year is blessed! And congrats to your son on his swearing-in today…lots of reasons to smile! 🙂
I just purchased a maxi skirt a month ago because it was on clearance…love the idea of pairing it with my jean jacket…I have avoided maxi lengths until now because they always need hemmed so I can walk, but I am trying to go outside my comfort zone, so thanks for the styling tips!

  16. What a big day for your family! How fun to have a reason to celebrate both children on the same day! Your daughter really has been through a lot and I know with the support of you and your husband along with her faith, that she will succeed in this new chapter of her life! She will learn how strong she really is, something all women need!
I love maxi dresses and long boho skirts for this season and will embrace them with gusto as soon as our weather cooperates…

  17. I have not worn a maxi dress since elementary school in the 70’s (oh my!), but I’m thinking I’m going to give them a try. My legs just aren’t what they used to be! 🙂 I love how you styled that dress and it is definitely something I would wear.

A very happy birthday to Courtney (love the pic!) and congratulations to Cory! May this be a wonderful beginning for both of them!
