How To Overcome Fear-Beauty For the Heart

Fear-and-fatihDo you ever have times when you’re fearful? I sure do! I start thinking about the “what ifs” and my mind can get the best of me.

My husband reminds me all the time not to fear or worry about things that have not happened and may not ever happen. I know he’s right but sometimes it’s easier said than done.

Fear is the opposite of faith. Fear is a tool the devil uses against us to make us miserable and it can destroy our lives.

“God wants us to walk by faith, and Satan wants us to walk by fear.” -Joyce Meyer

I have learned when I start feeling fearful I need to start reading scriptures that can calm my fears and remind me that Jesus is in control. Nothing is a surprise to Him!

So today if you have something that you are fearful about or feeling anxious over, read His word. Know that if Jesus is powerful enough to calm a storm (Mark 4:35-40), He can and will calm our fears.

Here are some scriptures that speak to me when I am fearful:

  • For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2Timothy 1:7
  • So we can say with confidence “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:6
  • Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? Luke 12:25-26
  • Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Today, know that with Jesus we have nothing to fear!

Do you have a scripture that helps you when you are fearful?

This song resonates with me when I have gone through a difficult season. There comes a point when we have to let go and keep on living life!

Have a blessed Sunday!

  1. I can quickly become fearful when I focus on circumstances or “what ifs”. With each difficulty in life, God has taught me more dependance and focus on Him. Now I can look back at all the time’s that He’s been there and trust the circumstances and future to Him.

  2. Hi Cyndi. How appropriate is this post? We are going to start up our Bible study at work after the Christmas break this week and we are starting to study “Fearless” by Max Lucado. I am also fearful of something that is going on in my life right now. Message from God for me? I think yes….. Happy New Year!

  3. In an earlier post from you, you mentioned in a phrase No turning back. Please listen to Brandon Heath’s song titled “No Turning Back” It speaks of faith and has been powerful for me in my walk with God.

  4. Thank you for posting that song! It is such an encouragement!!! It beautifully sums up where I’ve been lately. Today the Lord had me close the door to so many things from the past that would not allow me to step into the bountiful, glorious future He has for me. Stepping into His healing Light. Bless you, Cyndi!!!

  5. This was perfect for today! Within the past hour, I pulled in the driveway after traveling across the state to help my son get his apartment ready for another semester at college. While I love my kids tremendously, I hate driving! It makes me a nervous Nellie being on the interstate and then making the return trip alone. But then I remembered I wasn’t alone–God is my co-pilot. 🙂

My go-to verse to combat anxiety and fear is Joshua 1:9: Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid! For the Lord thy God is with thee wheresoever thou goest. (One of the first verses I memorized as a child.) *smile*

  6. Thank you, Cyndi for today’s reminder about fear. It is a real threat in life and Satan does use it any time he can to get our eyes off of God. One of your verses is my favorite verse now. In 2009 I had breast cancer. Early in the morning on the day of my surgery, I was reading Scripture and asked God to show me something. He led me to Isaiah 41:10. Immediately a sense of peace enveloped me. I even thought it interesting that he said he would hold me by His RIGHT hand, for my surgery was on the left side and He knew I would not be raising that hand for awhile.🙂 God is good like that and I thank him everyday that I have been cancer free for seven years.

I know my comment is lengthy and thanks for letting me brag on our wonderful Heavenly Father!

  7. I noticed so many quoting Joyce Meyer today… I read all her books and listen to her every morning. What a Blessing!

  8. Thank you for this post today. As much as I know I need to have more faith it is difficult for me. I struggle with severe anxiety and it seems especially bad this month. I am making a note of these scripture references (and add to my own).

  9. I have worked many years to overcome fear. In my 20’s it was a daily battle. I would listen to Joyce Meyer’s tapes on the way to work and it helped get me through many days. FEAR “False Evidence Appearing Real” has stuck with me through the years. Could’t be more true.

  10. Thank you so much for the post today! The scriptures I needed for sure. And the song I shared the link to my Facebook page. I have some friends that have lost 22 year old son and another 58 year old mother. I hope this will ease some of their pain.

    Thank you again 🙂

  11. Dear Cyndi, Due to my depression/anxiety condition, fear can worm its way into me at without much trouble at all. I, like you, can do the “what-ifs” like a professional until I get myself into a state. Then I start thinking about how I have sinned by letting worry take over me instead of relying on God and knowing He is always with me.
When I get overwhelmed, my husband always recites 2Timothy 1:7 to me and tells me to keep repeating that to myself. God shows himself and His goodness to me through my husband during all of these times. Be Blessed!

  12. Cyndi thank you for this post. I say down to have a cup of tea and put together my thoughts to teach religious ed tonight to high school sophomores. I usually teach with someone else and I am always the quieter teacher – I just have a hard time with articulating what I want to say in a way that sounds good and I’m just not a wordy person. But tonight, I have to teach by myself and I’m so scared it will be horrible. My son is in my class and I don’t want him to be embarrassed that his mom is a horrible teacher. So thank you for these words. First I am going to read some scripture and then figure out what else to say. I know God will be with me.

  13. Cyndi,
Thank you for these passages and this song. They spoke to me. Looking forwatd to starting the Bible study with you.

  14. Definite needed words in this day and age……I remember when I was a single parent and the fear that would consume me, always in the middle of the night, then I’d wake exhausted to start my day at work. I lived in dread and fear, daily, for years……I don’t like thinking back on those days, they were so painful……Thank God…..that’s all I can say, THANK GOD, THANK GOD….I no longer live with that <3

  15. What a great post Cyndi! Two of the scriptures I like to help conquer fear are: Philippians 4 & 19, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.; But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (KJ Open Bible version).
As I read your post, the very first thoughts that ca,e to my mind are of Rory and Joey Feek. They are a very popular Christian/Country duo. As of last night, Joey’s time on earth is coming to an end. She has told her husband that she told Jesus she is ready to come home. Joey has had a tough battle with cancer, and since last October has been enjoying life to the best of her abilities since medically, nothing else could be done. Joey does not fear death and Rory knows that she will still be with him, but in a different way until he goes to his heavenly home.
    Have a blessed day!

  16. Thank you for posting this. My husband goes this week for scans to see if they can help fight this cancer inside of him. My stomach has been in knots and I am fearful. This reminds me that I have to trust God. He has His hands on it and is in control.

  17. I love this post, Cyndi ~ my word for the year is TRUST because I often let fear creep in and wreak havoc (despite my best efforts!). I’m especially drawn to Psalm 56:3… When I am afraid I will put my trust in you.
    Have a blessed weekend!

  18. My husband and I started going to the gym a year ago. The weight room can be a very intimidating place. Especially for beginners and being the only female in there sometimes. Sometimes I would get all the way there and not want to go in. I was afraid of being to weak or the only female and what others would think of me. As time has passed I have overcome that fear, but occasionally fear would try to creep back in and tell me lies…so I often remind myself that “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” Phil 4:13! For me it’s perfect!!!

    1. Good for you Christina! I like that verse also. Congrats on going for a year now! I’m back this month after being away for awhile. And experiencing the consequences of not exercising…..
Some gyms are more intimidating than others. I have found one that has a fair number of over 40 folks and women just trying to stay heathy. 😊

  19. Perfect timing Cyndi! I needed that this morning – One of the things I want to get a better handle on in 2016 is fear. I have printed out the list of scriptures to study and reflect. Thank you for sharing – I have enjoyed your blog for over 2 years now. Have a great Sunday.

  20. Just beautiful. I love how you quote Joyce and include a Danny Goeke song. They both are uplifting and speak volumes when it comes to the topic of fear Thank you for the verses on fear as well. You have a beautiful gift. Thank you for sharing. God bless.
