How To Style a Chambray Shirt

You can’t go wrong with a chambray shirt, light and dark shades are popular so today I’m sharing How to Style a Chambray shirt.

A chambray shirt is a basic wardrobe piece that is a good piece to have in your closet. The best part about a chambray shirt, besides the comfort is the number of ways you can style it.

From spring to winter, there’s the possibility of layering it with sweaters, dressing it up with skirts and everything in between. I have styled a chambray shirt several different ways over the last few years.

Here are some more ideas on styling a chambray shirt.

Lastly, this is not a chambray shirt but I snapped a picture of the outfit I wore yesterday to a speaking engagement. I purchased the outfit from Ann Taylor and all the pieces are 40% off online.

Many of you have asked about dress pants and I personally like the Devin Fit pants from Ann Taylor. I’m wearing the Devin denim ankle pant.

  1. Hi Cyndi! Just wanted to let you know that I tried a chambray shirt with a maxi skirt and riding boots today and got lots of compliments at work. Thanks as always for the inspiration! And keep the great photos coming! I so enjoy your blog! – Linn

  2. Beautiful YOU !! Love you sweet little silky scarf!!
It amuses me, and gives me a chuckle, how often that I wear an outfit and then get online in a day or two and find your blog with the same item that I’ve just worn!
Here in south eastern KY our temps are warmer for this time of year so I figured I would get out my “jean” shirt… Chambray blouse and match it up with my dark blue jeans, brown boots and military jacket with leopard scarf… and here today you are talking about the very same blouse and matched up with leopard items also!!! Sooo cool.. I had started out the door with my leopard flats on, but with all our rain and mud, I changed into brown boots!!

  3. I love this post! I have 4 chambray shirts in rotation right now and I love to wear them lots of different ways! Thank you for all of the images- I just added several to my Pinterest board. My teenage daughters laugh that all of my pins have a combination of each of 4 elements: cardigans, white t-shirts, chambray, and distressed denim. For the most part, that is true! Chambray is a winner!

  4. I love my chambray shirt! It is so soft and comfy… But I do tend to wear with the same outfits all the time. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I love chambray shirts! Do you have any brands that are your go to options? I have a large chest and I find that most of them are not flattering in the chest area when buttoned up, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! If they have pockets they lay strangely.

    1. Wear a tank underneath, then leave a couple of buttons undone over the bust area. That way your shirt isn’t pulling. Let us know if that is suitable solution, Christin.

  6. I am going to have to revisit my chambray shirt. Love having some new ideas on how to wear the chambray shirt especially with these milder temps! I also love the neck tie! I think I’m going to have to give that a try!

I also would love to know the color of your bedroom wall!

    Have a blessed day!

  7. Love my chambray shirts-they are so versatile. Lovely outfit you have on, so classic 😍.
On a different subject what is the color on your walls? It is so pretty!
And yes, love is always better than hate

  8. Thanks for posting this I was wondering if these shirts were still in style…. now I know they are 🙂 Also was wondering is the jean vest and jean jacket are still in style for 2017?

  9. I love how much versatility you get out of this shirt. Honestly, I haven’t worn one in years, but I mostly blame that on having a large chest and large middle section so it’s hard to find a shirt that will button up! I agree with Jodie above, the neck scarf look is fabulous!

  10. Cute outfit you wore yesterday, Cyndi! I am petite at 5 ft so Loft, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, & any petite department are my go to stores for shopping . Nude pumps are awesome for everything I believe to look dressed up. I don’t do chambray shirts much as they usually over whelm my stature and end up looking sloppy instead of stylish on me. I did find a peep toe bootie that I loved after I saw yours styled with jeans at DSW and snagged it the other day in a 5.5 – yay! Thanks for all your inspiration! 🙂

      1. No I haven’t tried Christopher & Banks , Genie but thanks for the tip! I always need another Petite shop to try out. 😀

  11. Good Morning Cyndi! The outfit you wore yesterday is so nice! As I begin to modify the clothes in my closet, I am going to consider adding a long chambray top, with a sleeve length I can adjust, now that I’ve seen the various ways it can be styled. The winters in this part of GA are rather mild, so that is a top I can wear all year minus the peak hot summer months.

    Have a blessed day!

  12. Love your outfit!! You been talking about how much you are liking the the smaller neck tie scarves, but I wasn’t so sure myself..I definitely think you’re going to own this trend though!! I just love it on you!

  13. Hey Cyndi…I got you back. I really in enjoy your blog. I am only 5 ft tall, but most of the clothes you style I can wear. I shop at Loft, Talbot’s and some Belks. I usually find a lot of the clothes you style and they look just fine. I am looking for a pink & while stripe long sleeve or 3/4 sleeve like you styled last year. I believe you got yours at Gap. I love the Beauty from the Heart segment of your blog. You alasys inspire. Have a great day. ❤

    1. I remember that top and it was always sold out. Maybe this year! I also never found a pair of mint jeans I liked on myself.

  14. Thanks for showing fun ways to style the chambray shirt. I always feel boring when I wear one but you gave me some great ideas! Blessings to you today!

  15. Not on the subject but what color paint is on your wall?
What color did you paint your kitchen? I’m having a hard time picking paint😁

  16. Hi Cyndi! I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog! I’ve been following it for a year or two now, and I look forward to checking it every day. As a working mom of young kids in my mid-forties, I prefer a classic style with just a little trendy thrown in, but it has to be clean and simple to fit into my crazy schedule. Your ideas strike the perfect balance for me, and then your scriptural Beauty for the Heart are the icing on the cake! Thank you for your daily inspiration and motivation!!!!

  17. The 3 of us did a series on the blog on chambray shirts this fall because I think you’re absolutely right—they are such a wardrobe staple!!
I love the idea of wearing them with a skirt to make it less dressy too (like you did with your maxi, above!)
And I love that you wore a neck scarf to your speaking engagement, Cyndi—you looked positively lovely!
