THE 3 MOST COMMON TOXINS IN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

Happy Saturday! Today, I’m going to share about the three most common toxins in household cleaners. You know I’m on a mission to remove toxins in my home. It’s a passion for me, and while I’m not perfect, I’m slowly getting there.

Household cleaners are the BIGGEST contributor to toxins in our homes! We CAN control what we used inside of our homes. We touch the cleaning products we use; we breathe in the cleaning products we use and in worse case scenarios, sometimes those cleaners accidentally get ingested.

The three most common toxins in household cleaners are:

1. 2-Butoxyethanol (window and multipurpose cleaners)

Risks: sore throats when inhaled. At high levels can also contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema, and severe liver and kidney damage.

2. Ammonia (bathroom and window cleaners, jewelry cleaners)

Risks: Can trigger asthma, chronic bronchitis with regular to frequent exposure.

3. Bleach & Chlorine (scouring powders, toilet bowl cleaners, mildew removers and laundry whiteners)

Risks: Respiratory and skin irritant(acute), can be hormone disruptor (chronic)

What To Use Instead: THIEVES HOUSEHOLD CLEANER – THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m on FacebookPinterest, and my favorite one, Instagram.

Beauty For the Heart~~For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

God does not expect perfection from us. Why else did Jesus come to save us? What God asks from us is a reliance on Him who is perfect and to strive to be more like Him.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Thanks for the quick link to Natuve Deodorant! Just made a little fun purchase for mysel with free shipping!

  2. Cyndi, I’m just beginning in my learning and use of essential oils. I appreciate the info, and I enjoy the videos when I can catch them. I received a dew drop diffuser with my starter kit and really like it. Although, I wish it ran for longer than 4 hours at a time! The diffusers on YL seem limited in choice and expensive. Is it ok to use other brands of diffusers? Thanks!

  3. Hi Cyndi, thank you for your post on YL oils. I love them and love getting ideas on new ways to try them. I wish you would add in more post on your organic journey (if your regular readers don’t like these post maybe you could do two different post in a day). I’m looking for an organic deodorant recommendation plus other organic products for every day living, including foods. When I need to get new items I have been trying to replace with organic when possible. Thanks again for a great blog. Have a great day

  5. Thanks for the response. I think it’s the five large graphics advertising products that has me worried. Thanks for giving me the reassuring info.

  6. Curious if these cleaning products kill the bacteria and viruses? Any studies done by microbiologist? Just wondering, as I don’t want to spend time cleaning and just be wiping lemon smell over everything. I know chemicals are bad and I’m trying to find some new alternatives that don’t have strong smells. I think I’m addicted to my clorox wipes though. 🙂 LOL Just seems they do such a good job of cleaning when you wipe things down,(like toilets), but probably not so good. 🙁 Thanks for sharing infor. on your products you recommend. Enjoy your Sat. Its beautiful and sunny and warm here in the Northwest.

  7. I am very interested in essential oils and have lots of questions. Are there any independent studies on the Thieves cleaning products about their ability to kill bacteria and viruses? I know many people like to use vinegar, but I read a study that a microbiologist did and it did not kill the germs, just a superficial clean. Just hoping essential oils actually kill the germs. I would love less toxins in my home. Thanks!

    1. Debbie, you can google the ingredients in Thieves and see if there are any independent studies. I don’t know of any myself. I had to laugh a little, I’ve used lots of cleaning products but I’ve never checked for independent studies on them. 🙂

  8. Cyndi, Have you ever tried the Melaleuca products if so, how do they compare to theirs? I use the laundry and dish soap. Ive tried a few cleaning products but didn’t feel like it got my shower as shiny and clean as I wanted. Thanks, Teresa

  9. Cyndi, How would you compare YL to Melaleuca products? I love their laundry and dish soap but not the cleaning products. I just don’t think they leave the shower and tub and sinks shiny and clean looking. Thanks for your input. Teresa

  10. How do the cleaning products work on stains in the sink or toilet? We have very hard water and it makes it difficult to remove some stains when cleaning. That’s usually the reason I use products that contains bleach. Also, do you burn scented candles in your home Cyndi? I’ve been curious about that adding toxins to the air in our house. Thx

  11. Cyndi , I love these post along with the fashion and beauty, please don’t stop doing them . I am now using Theives cleaner , hand soap and I am working on getting the laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent. I am also diligently working on the ditch and switch on all products, I wander if YL could make a hairspray Lol because that is the one thing that is going to be hard to give up . Thank you so much again for introducing me to YL , it has changed my life
    Blessings!!!

  12. Love, Love, Love my Thieves cleaner! Can’t live without it. Makes me feel so good to know that I am not harming my kiddos or pets with these cleaning products. 🙂

  13. I love thieves products. Slowly ridding our house of the toxic chemicals!
I appreciate that you share other products/ solutions that we may not know about !!

  14. I’ve been using Thieves cleaner for a little over a year now and LOVE it. We have 2 new puppies who are still learning and it cleans their accidents fantastically. They do not go back and mark.

  15. Caring critique from a fan! I’ve always appreciated your blog for your pressure-free, ad-free posts about inner and outer beauty, life for the over 40 set, and products you are curious to try. Hoping the increased ads, product placement and sales rep feel reviews so prevalent in this post are not permanent. klb

    1. Kelly, I always appreciate a caring critique. Is it because I’m talking about Young Living? I share about fashion and beauty but I also share my passion for healthy living.

I typically share Young Living once a month, on a Saturday, which is when I don’t typically post about fashion and beauty. If it bothers you, I would skip these posts but there are a lot of women who love Young Living that read my blog and I’m committed to helping them.

      Blessings,
      Cyndi
