What I Wore for a Headshot Photo Session

Happy Monday! This past weekend, I had a headshot photo session with Kristin Tatem. I am in the process of upgrading my blog design, and I wanted to update my photos.

The first thing I did was pick out my outfit for the photo session. When picking out an outfit go with colors that work with your skin tone. What color do people always compliment you on? That’s the color you want to choose. I chose a lavender lightweight sweater.

Stay away from busy patterns. Patterns can easily become dated and can overwhelm a photo. You want your face to take center stage in a headshot, so keep your colors simple and solid.

Avoid tons of bling. Accent pieces of jewelry are a great way to give your headshot a little personality. But, be careful, you don’t want a massive necklace stealing your thunder.

Kristin had Sara Drury at the photo session to do my makeup. She did a great job of giving me a natural look without overdoing my makeup.

I checked out the final look, and now I’m ready for the pictures.

Kristin showed me how she wanted me to sit for some of the photos.

And then she started shooting. I can’t wait to use these pictures for my new blog design.

I took a few pictures of this outfit after church on Sunday. The tie front sweater comes in several colors, but I’m wearing the purple sheer. The tie sweater would be great to wear to work. I love the sleeve length.

I’m wearing Wit & Wisdom ankle skimmer jeans. They are a fabulous pair of dressier jeans that will dress up casual Friday. They’re dark-washed with a slim, trim fit and an ankle-grazing length.

  1. I love that shade of lavender/purple. I do better in those sort of shades too. Purple is too bold on me and light lavender is too weak on me but that shade is awesome. Long ago when color analysis was the thing I was told I was a summer/winter, In other words could wear summer darker colors and winter lighter colors. I don’t know if they really still go by any of that any longer but I think we all know what looks good with our coloring. I don’t do orange, yellow very much, peach, etc. I love peach & coral but they wash me out…..pink I get compliments on so stick with that. I love your shoes & I bet the photos will be awesome. Can’t wait to see. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I love the sweater; that is my favorite color too! I went ahead and ordered one from Nordstrom but was unsure of size. I got a large; I hope it’s not too big. Thanks for the tip!

  8. Can’t wait to see your updated Blog design! Your photo will be stunning! And that sweater is very pretty! I love the BFTH today! Be Blessed today!

  9. So pretty! Your photo tips are spot on! I used to manage a portrait studio and that is exactly how I advised clients. The best, long lasting portraits you’ll want to look at for a long time DO NOT have your outfit as the feature- they have your face as the feature! Classic and understated is always better than trendy and flashy for professional portraits!

  10. Love your decisions to keep it simple in the new picture for your new blog. Can’t wait to see it. This light purple is a great color on you and I appreciated the tips you gave us when taking a photo. Very enlightening. I can’t wait to see your new blog.

Thanks for BFTH today. A good one to copy and keep where I can see it often.
    Blessings,

  12. I loved the Beauty for the Heart today. I think you headshots will look great. I like how you kept it simple and natural and then purple sweater is very flattering. I have to try those jeans since they come in petite!

  13. Simply Gorgeous! Thanks for the tips can’t wait to see the finished work. Have a Blessed Day!

  14. I agree with your picture taking suggestions 100%. One of the best pictures I’ve ever taken was on Mother’s day a few years ago at our church. I had on a bright pink blouse (good color for me), white jeans and a neutral pair of shoes – my daughter had on a busy pattern blouse and it was so distracting from her pretty face.
I excited to see your new design!

  15. You look fabulous love your hair and makeup the outfit you wore is sooo pretty love the purple can’t wait to see the new photos and your new blog and todays beauty for the heart message is great
