5 Ways to Wear a Black Cardigan

Happy 2019!! I love beginnings, and I love that we have a blank slate. I’m ready to get this year started!

Today, I’m sharing 5 Ways to Wear a Black Cardigan. I shared a casual outfit with this black cardigan last week, but it can be worn lots of different ways.

Everyday Casual #1

This is the way I styled the cardigan last week. This is an outfit I’d typically wear during the weekday in my very casual work environment. I styled it with leggings and a white t-shirt. Since our weather is cold, I added a black infinity scarf.

Everyday Casual #2

This second outfit is something I would wear to a lunch date with friends. I love adding a touch of leopard to my outfits, and I added it with a belt. I also love a tall boot, and I’ve shared the ones I’m wearing a lot over the last few months.

Casual Office #1

This could be another everyday casual look or something you could wear to a business casual office. I love to mix black and olive green. I added my favorite short booties.

Casual Office #2

This is another business casual outfit. I love wearing velvet pants in the winter, and these from LOFT are really comfortable. The plaid blouse is from Old Navy and is on sale.

Date Night Outfit

Lastly, I’m sharing a more dressy look with faux leather leggings and black pumps. My floral blouse is sold out at Macy’s, but I did find it on the Vince Camuto website.

As I was planning, I was reminded of the scripture, Proverbs 16:9, We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.

  1. Love the floral blouse. I bought it last year when you paired it with black skirt and purple cardigan. On the lookout for the faux leather leggings and black cardigan.

    1. Very easy and simple.
Most of us have black cardigans, a pair of black leggings or pants a white T-shirt …those 3 items can be accessorized sooooo many different ways and always look great.

  2. Thank you for sharing pretty and
simple outfit ideas! And the scriptures are always great… taking care of the inside and outside.. 💐🌞🌼

  3. Great post! Excited to see more posts like this to help get the creativity flowing on how to better utilize our pieces we own. Thanks for doing this as I’m sure it’s more effort to come up with multiple images!

  4. Love this post! All the outfits are great, plus it inspires me to create new outfit combos from my closet (vs just buying new stuff!)

  5. Great post! I can replicate all of these looks with clothes I have in my closet. 🙂 I’d love to see 5 ways to wear a plaid shirt (so you don’t look like a lumberjack). 😉

  6. Terrific post, great outfits! I especially like the cardigan with the olive green. Would love to know your favorite items to get at Trader Joe’s.

  7. I like this post but can’t believe I don’t own a black cardigan🤔
What kind of healthy food option do you buy at Trader Joe’s? I have one near me but never think to go there.

  8. A black cardigan is so versatile. I love the ways you have styled it and I love these types of posts. I try to incorporate these types of post into my blog as well. Today I shared two ways to wear a JCrew turtleneck, one for work and one for weekend. Pinning your post!

  9. I love a black cardigan with leggings and tennishoes. Just feels so comfortable but put together. Great post.

  10. I love this post, Cyndi! These are looks I can shop for in my own closet to get a fresh look. Thanks for the new ideas!

  11. I love these types of posts! All of the styles with the cardigan look great! I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year! I love reading your posts every day!

  12. This is a very useful post. I love wearing a black cardigan. Thank you!

I read your blog and JoLynn’s everyday (even when I don’t read any other email)!!

  13. Cyndi, thanks so much for the outfit inspirations! I save so many of your posts and it helps me pack for trips! I have signed up for the 2nd time with Faster way ti Fat Loss. I had a hard time with the app and finding appropriate foods. Could you share what you purchased at Trader Joe’s? Thanks so much!

  14. My daughter thought I’d like your style & she was right. You do a great job w being in style wo breaking the bank & using items in multiple looks. Also, your site is user friendly. Keep up the great job!

  15. Great post! I especially enjoy these where you show us different ways to style the same basic wardrobe pieces…ideas to expand our wardrobe in a budget friendly way. Thanks!!!

  16. I have to let my style-ignorance show, so I beg everyone’s forgiveness. This is exactly why I’m following you, Cyndi! In the outfit with the jeans and tall boots, I see it as the belt tying all the colors together : black sweater, tan boots, white top. But my past “styling” doesn’t understand the black-white-green-gray with the leopard belt. Is there a rule-of-thumb or a lesson I can carry from here on out? My eyes like the look but my brain is fighting me. Please help! And thank you in advance also.

  17. Love the black sweater and I do these looks all the time – it is definitely a staple in my closet. So, how did the celery juice thing go? I made some too and did drink it – very interesting. Not sure how long one is supposed to drink this. Your thoughts??

    1. Well…I don’t love it but I am going to keep doing it. I need a juicer, I Have a Bullet and I don’t think it juices it well enough.

So, I’m looking for a good inexpensive juicer!

  18. I joined the FWTFL. I know you have shared some of your favorite recipes that go with this program but I can’t find them on your blog. Where do you post them?

    1. Linda, I don’t think I’ve posted them but I do use Skinnytaste.com a lot to get recipes. She has a great website and I don’t have her cookbook but I have heard it is great too.

  19. Loved this post. Great options. Considering ordering the black cardigan but at 5’ 4” I’m wondering if I to should order the petite or regular length?

  20. Thank you so much. The inspiration is helpful.
Many times I have most of the pieces of an outfit you post and I just don’t think to put them together. Thank you for making me more stylish.
    Happy New Year!

  21. Hi Cyndi,
Love the different options for styling the black cardigan.
I have the same olive pants and would love to see some options for styling them different ways. I feel like I get in a rut with them and only wear the same top every time.

  22. I could really use a closet staple like a black cardigan. Is this one TTS? I see they offer it in petite, which is great for my 5’4” frame. I plan on purchasing through your link, just need your recommendation on how the sizing is. Thanks for another awesome post and have a blessed day!

    1. Deborah, Gibson sent me the small but I think the XS would fit me a little better. I would say it runs TTS and you definitely need the petite size.

  23. Happy New Year to you Cyndi!

Love all 5 looks!! This post is very helpful…. Its nice to see how to use one piece multiple different ways.

Would also love a post on what your fav items are at Trader Joe’s.

  24. All of these looks are great. I have a question about the sizing of the velvet pants. The size e charts show measurements and then sizes like 4, 6, etc…but the size options to chose from are 26, 27, 28, etc…I don’t know how to convert the sizes. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Susan. I wear a size 4 and when I order by number it is a 27. At least for LOFT its how it is. Hope this helps if Cyndi doesn’t answer back.

    2. Susan, the 26 is a size 2, the 27, is a size 4 and the 28 is a size 6. I do LOFT pants run big. I usually wear a size 28 but in these I wore a size 27. Hope that helps!

  25. Love this, and thank you! I have two new Gibson pieces (ordered that v-neck top you had on the other day from your link!!) I noticed that it says to hand wash… I’m so glad you mentioned that you have washed them on delicate- I was starting to be frustrated about that! LOL! 🙂 I also got a pair of faux leather leggings at Nordstrom Rack while doing my Christmas shopping… and now I’m wondering how I will actually wear them! So thanks for showing this again as well!
Blessings on the new year to you!

  26. I love these posts… I think I’d wear anyone of them. Is there a rule of thumb for the length of a cardigan with a skirt or dress? I’m starting back to my exercises today and doing the same things with my to do list for the house… I just have to remember to pace myself…
    Thanks for the BFTH

    1. I don’t think there is any rule, you can wear a cardigan that is shorter than your dress or a little longer, either way works and it’s a personal preference.

  27. This post is so great. I tend to get stuck in a rut with the things I tend to pair together, and posts like this help me to think outside of my usual. My favorite is #2 with the white t-shirt and camel boots. I would never think to do the camel boots–my usual thought process would have me wearing black ones. But this outfit looks so fresh! Well done, Cyndi!

  28. I LOVE THE WAY YOU SHOWED VARIOUS LOOKS WITH A SINGLE MAIN ELEMENT. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE OF THIS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THANK YOU! I CANNOT PICK A FAV AS I LOVE THEM ALL.

  29. All of them look great so no way to decide a favorite. I love post like this. I have several of these pieces but never think to style them together like this, so thank you! I started FWTFL for the first time ever and am excited. Please share some of your healthy food choices on your instastories.

  30. I’m planning a big healthy stock up at trader joes as soon as I’m over this sinus infection. Could you post or send me what you buy there?

  31. I’m on board with one item several ways, because let’s be honest…we have to make the items we purchase stretch – at least I do anyway. Pieces that can cover a multitude of occasions are great! Thank you for this post, I’m looking forward to these!

  32. Love this post. I like it when you can see how many outfits you can make with clothes you might have or not have. Using a black cardigan is great it gives me a lot of ideas on how to put things together. Thank you for this blog. And it certainly helps when you can’t think of what to wear! Hope you can do this more often, thank you.

  33. Do you advise the long cardigan for those of us who are short(5’1”). Looks as if I have no legs😁 even in a petite size.

  34. I love all these looks and I love cardigans! I noticed that you tuck your shirts in and wear belts now that you are a size XS what about the ladies like me who weigh 20 pounds more than you do can we even wear these looks? A black cardigan is my go to piece! Have a great day!

    1. Just my opinion, but I think anyone would look good in all of these. The cardigan with a tucked in top creates a great image.

    2. Tuck your shirt in then reach up to release some. It still gives you some definition ( shape) under your cardigan. The long cardigan will then hide extra pounds. Just make sure it skims your body, not clinging. Hope this helps!

    3. Rhonda…..you don’t have to tuck your shirts in. Just have them fit properly and not too long and with the cardigan over it, you will look great. :

  35. This is my favorite type of post- where you show multiple ways to wear the same piece. I love everything you styled with the black cardigan. I’m looking forward to seeing your hair styling post in 2019. You always have great hair!

Your Instastories have inspired me to declutter. My son helped me take a whole SUV-load of stuff to Goodwill and I’m currently working on my second load!

    Have a great 2019, Cyndi!
