What Is Your Life Built On?

If you grew up in church, you’ve probably heard the song, The wise man built his house upon the rock, The wise man built his house upon the rock, The wise man built his house upon the rock, And the rain came tumbling down….

I sang this song many times as a young child, and then I taught it to my children, and now I sing it with my grandchildren.

It’s a song, I sang as a child, but I didn’t understand the full meaning. As an adult, I understand that building my house on a strong foundation means building my life on Jesus Christ.

What Is Your Life Built On?

We find these verses in scripture (Matt.7:24-27), Everyone who hears my teaching and applies it to his life can be compared to a wise man who built his house on an unshakable foundation.

When the rains fell, and the flood came, with fierce winds beating upon his house, it stood firm because of its strong foundation.

But everyone who hears my teaching and does not apply it to his life can be compared to a foolish man who built his house on sand.

When it rained and rained, and the flood came, with wind and waves beating upon his house, it collapsed and was swept away.

What I know is this, life is hard, troubles will come, but Jesus is my HOPE, He is my strong foundation. Without Him, I would be lost.

Pat Barrett says, “If I’ve learned anything, it’s that life rarely behaves with our plans. And, it’s usually in the uncertainty, and in the not knowing and in the trials that reveals what we’ve been standing on the whole time.”

So I guess my question for you today is, “What is your life built on?”  Do you have a strong foundation (Jesus) or have you built your house on the sand? It’s never too late to run to Jesus.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on FacebookPinterest, and, Instagram.

  1. Excellent – I needed to hear this right now in my life. I am now 78 and you would think I had it all together – but worry has become strong in my life and I don’t like it. I have never been a negative person – but worry seems to be a bigger part of my life than I want it to. I stress a lot over a precious granddaughter – do not like her lifestyle the last few months – please pray with me for Robin!!!! Thank you and God Bless – love your posts!!!

  2. Love this song and post. I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in November. I’m 51, non smoker, no family history and very active, so it’s been quite a blow. Like you said, our plans don’t always align with Gods. So thankful I’ve built a firm foundation in my life and the life of my children.

  3. Thank you so much for reminding me of my plum line and my foundation. My family has had one nonstop trial after another since 2005. Some of these trials worse than others. A fire in 2009 where I mentally have not recovered from, a heart surgery this past year, and now am faced with an aging parent in a nursing facility 250 miles away, 2 adult children 2-3 hours away in opposite directions and I have recently lost both of our beloved dogs within 4 months of each other. We had to kenneled them while a trip to care for my mother. We came home picked them up and one of them died within 22 days of trying to save her and the other one just died on January 2nd. 2019. I feel very lonely and am not going out much these days. I’m struggling for answers even though I know “Our Godis Able”.
I would never post anything like this and have never done it before because I am a private person, but God is making me transparent through my trials and Authentic.

    1. Janiene, I will be praying for you. Sometimes life comes at us so fast and we feel like we just can’t keep up. Remember you are not alone, the lord is always with us.

  4. I love this song and Pat Barrett has a beautiful

  5. Cyndi- Thanks so much. For me this is a confirming encouragement. I am on the worship team we sang Build My Life for the first time today. Thanks so much for your devotional. When everything and everyone is shaking, Christ is my foundation. Blessings

  6. Love the truth of scripture and always think of…”My Hope is built on Jesus blood and righteousness”. Anyone who may read this post, please pray for a job for my hubby. Prayers for one that will not require a move, but God’s will.
    Thank you Cyndi and all

    1. I will be praying Sally. My husband has also been searching for a job and I also pray it won’t require a move, Hope is essential. We all must remain grounded in the Truth and not give in to endless worry and discouragement. Easier said than done some days. But God always provides and knows what is best for us.
