Layering Pieces For Fall

Happy hump day ladies! Well, no matter how much we love summer — the warm weather, relaxing vacations, longer days, many of us still welcome fall.

There’s something about crisp fresh air, hot apple cider, and pumpkins, that make fall a favorite season for so many of us.

Fall allows us more options to think about with our wardrobe, the return to warmer fabrics, and of course, layering. How can we wear some of the pieces in our closet a little longer?

Today I’m sharing a few of my very favorite layering pieces. None of these are new ideas, but I’m sharing the pieces I’ll wear over and over again this fall and winter.

First up, this faux leather jacket has been something I wear every fall. I’ve had it for several years, and it’s a great option for chilly fall days. You can add it to blouses, dresses and even a lightweight sweater.

Another fall layering piece is a denim jacket. I wear a denim jacket year-round, but in the fall, it gets even more wear. I have tried a lot of denim jackets, but this Kut from the Kloth is my favorite. The length is perfect, and it isn’t too bulky.

I purchased mine from Evereve, but Zappos has the same one, and it ships free.

If you need some warm layering pieces for fall, a long cardigan is a favorite of mine. One of my favorite brands is Peyton Jensen because it’s lightweight and sturdy and looks great with a tee or a cami.

This brand is a little more expensive, but I like to have a few nicer ones in my wardrobe. This Leith brand cardigan is another favorite of mine for longer cardigans.

This fall I’m giving my denim jacket a modern update with this animal print and raw hem jacket. This one will be fun to add to my outfits!

This is the time to check your wardrobe and make sure you have some layering pieces to add to your outfits. Fall will be here before we know it!

  1. Love this post, I would never have thought to put a striped cardigan with leopard flats. Now I how have another way to wear my leopard flats this fall.

  2. Great post Cyndi. Love the long cardigans also, but will have to be careful at 5ft 4 in. to try on to get the right length. Appreciate you helpful ideas to carry some of the summer things into fall. All great looks. Liked the use of the cami. I love my jean jacket and also have to cover up with a jacket when I get in air conditioned places.

  3. I love layering, especially with denim or similar style jackets. I’d love to know what you and other readers do when when layering a denim jacket with a cami and it’s a bit warm or uncomfortable for the jacket indoors. I’d feel a bit under dressed to remove the jacket and wear a cami at a restaurant or an office. It is my biggest obstacle to wearing this look. Thoughts?

  4. Have had a denim jacket from Target for eons now; it’s without debate 1 of the oldest articles of clothing I own and also the most versatile. It can be worn with almost anything! Love the animal print jacket you styled today. I wear jackets and cardigans pretty much year round b/c the AC in my workplace feels like it is set to about 60.
Since I started reading your and JoLynne’s posts, I feel like I’ve become a much better dresser and am proud of myself for not going out to buy a lot of new stuff. (I already had plenty!) You help me look at what I have in new and different ways.

  5. Love this Cyndi. FYI the animal print jean jacket links to shoes, not the jacket. Thx for all your time & effort with your blog. We greatly appreciate you! 😘

  6. Love all these looks! I too wear cardigans often (and love them!) and am able to wear jean jackets as a layering piece to work – I appreciate working in an office with a more casual approach to dressing. I found a great leopard print jean jacket at Walmart last week for under $20. It is really soft and will wear well. I appreciate finding more affordable options on extremely trendy pieces. Walmart has really stepped up their game IMO. Have a great day!

  7. Love these looks! I wear cardigans all the time. I also love to throw on a jean jacket for a different look. Fortunately our office is pretty casual so jean jackets are ok. I found a great leopard print jacket at Walmart for under $20. Its really soft and will wear well. Its a great affordable option for an extremely trendy piece. IMO Walmart has really stepped up their game!

  8. Love all these looks. I am looking to add a plaid blazer this fall as I do have lots of long cardigans already. I’m like you too – I always have a sweater on! 🙂

  9. The animal print jacket is super cute! I love a short cardi layered with a graphic T, a chunky necklace and crop jeans. Keep the fall trends coming’! 🙂

  10. So looking forward to weather when I can layer. Unlike most women I know, I LOVE the A/C because I’m very hot natured – and this isn’t just “flashing” – it’s all the time, all my life. It has to be pretty chilly for me to even wear a sweater.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I love the longer sweaters, but at 5’2″ many of those just don’t work for me.

    1. We have a cool mornings already here in Manitoba, Canada so I am already getting to layer. I love denim jackets, cardigans and basically everything you have shown but I do have to watch the length of those long cardigans. They aren’t all generous in the way they show my extra pounds. I was wondering about Kimonos in the fall in the rich jewel tones. Does that work? I am also wondering about scarves this fall. I am not seeing much of them, are they on the way out?

    2. I agree with you, Sharon. I’m 5’2” and a size 6. The long sweaters are so lovely, but unless the come in petite sizes, I can’t wear them.

  11. Love all! I was just looking at that motto jacket at Nordstrom’s yesterday! I think I’ll order it. Thank you for styling it.

  12. Good morning Cyndi!
I love all these looks but especially the Kut from the Cloth Jean jacket. I really like the more fitted look of this jacket and find it to be such a flattering look. I especially like it with the green Target dress and would style it with sneakers for a more casual look. I love your blog and look forward to seeing what you give us each day. Thank you for being a positive ray of God’s love every day❤️😇

  13. This post couldn’t be better timed:) I’ve been picking up transitional pieces as our falls are staying warm… I rely on my denim jacket now and moving forward; however if wearing blue jeans I don’t wear my denim jacket so I picked up some cardigans ( I like the longer ones too but have to be careful as I’m only 5’3) I ordered a nice one from amazon essentials very soft. I also just bought a cute light weight black jacket with a draw string waist it’s cute with jeans.. I got a black leather jacket last Christmas so I see wearing that a lot too especially once it turns cold… Thanks for these suggestions. I love them all:)
    Blessings ❤️
