Eye Makeup Tips – Women Over 40

Happy Monday, ladies! The snow is melting, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a new week. Our daytime temperatures are going to be above freezing all week!

Today I’m sharing eye makeup tips for women over 40. Doing our makeup as we age is always an evolving process, and we want to allow our natural beauty to shine through.

It’s best to think less is more as we age. We want to create a soft look, never harsh.

Here are my eye makeup tips for women over 40:

1. Magnifying Mirror

The first thing I would say is to make sure you have a good mirror with plenty of light. If you’re like me and your eyes aren’t as good as they use to be, you might try a magnifying mirror.

I recently purchased this one, and I love it! The 10x magnification allows me to put my eyeliner and eyeshadow on so much better.

2. Use a good concealer.

Next is to make sure you use a good concealer. I have dark circles, so I want to cover those up as much as possible.

I use Tarte Shape Tape because it gives me full coverage. A small amount goes a long way (I also use a color corrector before applying my concealer.)

I’ve recently been introduced to PAT McGRATH LABS – Sublime Perfection Concealer. I’ve ordered it and will let you know how I like it. I also really like Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer.

3. Always Prime your eyelids.

A primer will smooth and correct the color of your lids, making them look younger. Primer also prevents creasing and will make your eyeshadow last longer.

It’s great to wear all by itself when you don’t want to wear eyeshadow too!

4. Use matte or satin eyeshadow.

As we age, we have more lines and wrinkles, and too much sparkle in our eyeshadow can accentuate those lines and wrinkles. I’ve also read that warmer hues are better as we age.

5. Bump up your brow game.

We’ve talked about this many times, but brows are a game-changer. Gone are the days of plucking our eyebrows; we now know we NEED our eyebrows.

To make your eyes stand out, you need to pay attention to your brows—they frame your face.

6. Use an eyelash serum to help grow your lashes.

There are all kinds of lash serums, and I’ve shared some different serums at various price points.

7. Use eyeliner but don’t overdo it.

I typically use a dark brown eyeliner and tightline my upper lashline.

Some experts say you don’t put anything on your lower lash line, but I use a brown eyeshadow and line just under my lower lashes and then smudge it. Then, I follow with mascara.

8. Use Mascara

No question about it, mascara makes our eyes pop, and there’s plenty of good ones out there.

What eye makeup tips do you have for women over 40?

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on FacebookPinterest, and Instagram.

Beauty For The Heart~~ For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

I read this verse this morning, and it really spoke to me. God is a God of new things and new beginnings.

We may be in the wilderness or a dry wasteland, but he’s going to do something to make it new and better. He can’t take all the bad and make it into something we can’t even imagine.

I know because he has done it in my life, and He will do it for you.

Have a blessed day!

  1. I’ve been thinking about getting a magnifying mirror. Thanks for the recommendation. I have to touch up my roots about once a month now with the Clairol root touch up. I do my eyebrows at the same time but for only 5 minutes. It makes them pop more. And I really like your hair straight with your bangs pulled back. Shows how beautiful you are!

  2. I love all your tips! I think what would be helpful is to have an eyeshadow tutorial. I never know what looks good. Thank you for your daily encouragement!

  3. My favorite tips that I’ve started recently are getting my lashes done! After chemo I had sparse, thin lashes. I did use R & F but when your lashes are so sparse to begin with it didn’t help as much–I don’t even use top eyeliner with my fake lashes. It can be pricey because I get a fill every 3 weeks, but it’s worth it to me! I would also liked to recommend Thrive eyebrow gel! Alsok, I only use a tiny bit of eyeliner in the crevice of my eyes and just a little mascara on bottom—they can’t do your bottom lashes. Everytime I get a fill, I get compliments on my makeup!

  4. Thank you for the BFTH. I really was encouraged as I’m going through such a rough time with my chronic migraines. I’ve been dealing with these for over 30 yrs and just so exhausted from the roller coaster. I just found out I’m loosing my naturopath and have to start a new one…… my doctors can’t help anymore. I’ve tried it all. Praying God will work through this new beginning. Just would like to live the rest of my life migraine free. You just covered all the aging make up
Tip I could think of. I’ve tried going without lower liner but I feel bare and my eyes look tired. I want to stop it though. I never have done upper and won’t start. Less is more.

  5. I didn’t receive your insiders email this morning. I notice a pop-up to sign up every time I log on to your site over the past couple of weeks. Should I subscribe again?

  6. Thanx Cyndi…Would love to see you do a post on how we can achieve a natural eye look with our makeup. Mine never turns out right and ends up being too dark. I’ve found as I’ve gotten older I can’t wear as much eye makeup as I used to. Thank you!!

      1. How long have you used the lash serum, did it work and if so what brand worked best for you? Have a blessed day 🥰

  7. Thank you for the tips! You are my go to for beauty advice! Now I just need to get my hair to have more volume! Any new tips? I use Aveda Thickening tonic and I recently bought the Revlon blow dry brush. I like it!

  8. such a great post!!! I also have had my eyelashes and eyebrows professionally dyed and that has helped cover the gray brows and lashes so much!! I have very wrinkly eyelids any suggestions for products to help with that??? Thank you so much!!!

  9. Hi Cyndi – Great tips on fixing up our eyes. Have you tried lash Boost by Rodan and Fields? I’ve heard that they make the very best. It is pricy but I just wonder if it is really that good since so many other companies make it too at much much less.
In the BFTH,” He CAN take all the bad” is what I think you meant to say?

    1. Hi Penny Jo, I think I tried it a long time ago. I don’t sell it so I don’t share it if that makes sense.
Most everyone knows a R& F consultant so it’s pretty easy to purchase if you want to try it.

  10. Thank you SOMUCH for your tips on eye makeup for women over 40.
VERY HELPFUL! I am 60 and I feel like my eyes are disappearing. I am going to try one of the Lash Serum you suggested.

    Blessings,
