5 Best Face Sunscreens to Try

Let’s talk sunscreen! I get lots of questions this time of year from my readers about the best face sunscreens. What SPF? Does it leave a white cast? Do I need to wear it if my makeup already has it in it?

I’m sharing my favorites with you below, along with tips on how to choose the right sunscreen!

PS-If you’re looking to achieve a healthy glow, I highly recommend using one of the self-tanners I shared here!

Tips for Choosing a Sunscreen

One of the top reasons I wear sunscreen, especially as I’ve gotten older, is to prevent sun damage and wrinkles!

The sun’s UV rays are responsible for an estimated 90 percent of visible signs of aging. With that in mind, I’m sharing a few helpful reminders below!

  1. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, protecting you from UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). It should be at least SPF 30.
  2. If you have sunscreen from last year, check its expiration date! Note that if the sunscreen has been exposed to high temperatures (like being left in your car) its shelf life can be shorter.
  3. Most dermatologists will tell you that the best sunscreen is one that you will actually wear! Find what works best for you.

Best Face Sunscreens

You may be thinking that you don’t need face sunscreen if there is SPF in your makeup! I recently learned that’s not the case.

Many of these combo products require a heavy application to deliver the protection your skin needs. I’ve been told to think of them as the icing on the cake!

They are helpful but shouldn’t be the primary source of sun protection. In all reality, you should be applying a nickel-sized dollop of sunscreen to your face.

This is why I wanted to share some of the ones I use, along with ones that have come highly recommended from both my assistant, who is very fair, and the Cyndi Spivey Insider Facebook group.

1. Skin Medica Essential Defense

This is the one that I use daily! It is a mineral sunscreen that is very lightweight and ideal for anti-aging.

2. Elta MD

So many of you recommended this face sunscreen in my Facebook group! It was designed initially for people with rosacea and acne, and it also comes in a tinted version that dermatologists highly favor. I’m sharing some of your reviews below.

“It soaks in well and gives good coverage while looking dewy.”

“It’s sheer & lightweight also moisturizing, great for sensitive skin.”

3. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

My assistant loves this invisible, weightless, and scentless sunscreen. She’s used it for about 2 years now and hasn’t looked back. It’s the perfect primer for your makeup and doesn’t break you out. Plus, it goes on super smooth and is water and sweat-resistant for 40 minutes.

4. Colorescience Brush On Sunscreen

Reapplication is key, and this brush on sunscreen makes it so easy to do so! Throw in your bag, and you won’t have any excuse for getting burnt.

5. Unsun Tinted Sunscreen

This option is a 100% mineral sunscreen primer and color-corrector in one. I love that it comes in two tints: Light/Medium or Medium/Dark.

Do you have a favorite sunscreen you use? I’d love to hear what it is!

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on FacebookPinterest, and Instagram.

Beauty For the Heart~~

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not ’til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned

He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

  1. I use Skincuticals physical fusion UV defense. It’s tinted, has 50spf, and is non greasy. My dermatologist recommended it years ago and I still love it.

  2. Cyndi this is great information at this time. I’m starting with #1 Skin Medica & probably try them all til I feel I have the perfect one for me.

  3. I have had a great sunscreen I have used for years….It is Kiss My Face spf 30 sensitive side 3 in 1 face. Fragrance free…only a slight white cast. Not to greasy not to drying. My skin is dry and sensitive. This also is a great primer. And….it is cheap. Can pick it up at Walgreens too

  4. Having sensitive skin the only one I’ve found that I can wear is Neutrogena, their fragrance free one. Growing up in California there wasn’t any sunscreen I wasn’t allergic too so I have wrinkles now. Doing my best to prevent more.

  5. Cyndi, I love your blog!!

I’ve been using Australian Gold Botanical sunscreen that’s tinted and I love it. It goes on very smooth, doesn’t make me look oily, and the tint has pretty good coverage. I would highly recommend it!

  6. I get so frustrated trying to find one that feels good and not heavy and greasy. I hate to wear it but know I need to. I should use even in the Winter but haven’t. I think I’ll try the one you use daily. Thanks for sharing this post. I use to rely on my foundation, but now the CLEAN one I use doesn’t have SPF and from what you say, it should not be the only thing we use. I just wonder what all the ingredients in these sunscreens over time is doing to our skin. But, I know the sun is damaging. I wish I would have known more when I was younger and laying in the sun, boating, lifeguarding……just getting too much sun. My neck shows it as I have short hair and have all my life.

  7. Cyndi. My favs are SkinMedica tinted and Solbar Shield. Many times I use the SkinMedica instead of foundation. Use the Solbar Shield when working in yard and garden and walking. Both of these were recommended by my dermatologist. Have a beautiful day. God bless you.

  8. I have used sunscreen and foundation with sunscreen for several years. My biggest problem is it gets in my eyes if I am not careful and oh boy, it takes forever for the tears and burning to stop. I know this is a self answered question for me in that I have to be more careful , but just how close under the eyes and to the side do you go?
Always admired Corrie Ten Boom and her courage- the poem reflects her faith and is so encouraging.

  9. I enjoy your daily blog. I am having trouble when clicking on the quick links for Discount Codes. The other quick links work fine, but I can’t get the Discount Code to open.

  10. I started using ELTA tinted sunscreen last year when my granddaughter said it was recommended to her by her dermatologist. It does leave a light sheen, but I love it and only need to wear it on days when I will be at home.

    Love the poem. Thanks.

    1. Obagi sunscreen 50 Matte is great under makeup and will not weigh your face down. Sometimes if you have multiple products on your face it just seems to droop! My dermatologist recommends it.

  11. Thank you for that beautiful poem, life has been so hard, and I’m clinging to “all things work together for good” , but this was so precious.

  12. My favorite summer time facial sunscreen is Paula’s choice Resist Super-LIght Wrinkle Defense spf 30. It has a great matte finish so I don’t look greasy Where as the Elta md has a sheen.
