5 Best Face Sunscreens to Try

Let’s talk sunscreen! I get lots of questions this time of year from my readers about the best face sunscreens. What SPF? Does it leave a white cast? Do I need to wear it if my makeup already has it?

I’m sharing my favorites with you below, along with tips on how to choose the right sunscreen!

PS-If you’re looking to achieve a healthy glow, I highly recommend using one of the self-tanners I shared here!

Tips for Choosing a Sunscreen

One of the top reasons I wear sunscreen, especially as I’ve gotten older, is to prevent sun damage and wrinkles!

The sun’s UV rays are responsible for an estimated 90 percent of visible signs of aging. With that in mind, I’m sharing a few helpful reminders below!

  1. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen protecting you from UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). It should be at least SPF 30.
  2. If you have sunscreen from last year, check its expiration date! Note that if the sunscreen has been exposed to high temperatures (like being left in your car), its shelf life can be shorter.
  3. Most dermatologists will tell you that the best sunscreen is one that you will actually wear! Find what works best for you.

Best Face Sunscreens

You may be thinking that you don’t need face sunscreen if there is SPF in your makeup! I recently learned that’s not the case.

Many of these combo products require a heavy application to deliver the protection your skin needs. I’ve been told to think of them as the icing on the cake!

They are helpful but shouldn’t be the primary source of sun protection. In all reality, you should be applying a nickel-sized dollop of sunscreen to your face.

I wanted to share some of the ones I use and those that have come highly recommended from both my assistant, who is very fair, and the Cyndi Spivey Insider Facebook group.

1. Unsun Tinted Sunscreen

This option is a 100% mineral sunscreen primer and color-corrector in one. I love that it comes in two tints: Light/Medium or Medium/Dark.

2. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

My assistant loves this invisible, weightless, and scentless sunscreen. She’s used it for about 2 years now and hasn’t looked back. It’s the perfect primer for your makeup and doesn’t break you out. Plus, it goes on super smooth and is water and sweat-resistant for 40 minutes.

3. Skin Medica Essential Defense

This is one of my favorites! It is a mineral sunscreen that is very lightweight and ideal for anti-aging.

4. Elta MD

So many of you recommended this face sunscreen in my Facebook group! It was designed initially for people with rosacea and acne, and it also comes in a tinted version that dermatologists highly favor. I’m sharing some of your reviews below.

“It soaks in well and gives good coverage while looking dewy.”

“It’s sheer & lightweight also moisturizing, great for sensitive skin.”

5. Kinship Self Reflect Probiotic Sunscreen

This is a new to me brand. Allure Best of Beauty Award 2021 awarded it the best SPF. It’s a sheer, reef-safe, benzene-free mineral sunscreen for blemish-prone skin.

Do you have a favorite sunscreen you use? I’d love to hear what it is!

Beauty For the Heart™– You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. Genesis 50:20-21

Truth: Joseph had been through a lot, and he could have easily given into fear and worry throughout his life. He also could have been angry at God for allowing so many bad things to happen to him.

Instead, Joseph chose to see the good. He knew God was with him even when bad things happened.

Do you look for the good? Are you choosing to trust God more and worry less?

  1. Cindy-Do you know how any of these score on the YUKA app? I’m loving that app, thank you for sharing it!

  2. If you haven’t tried Tula I highly recommend giving it a try! It has easily become my favorite facial sunscreen.

  3. I use Elta MD and love how it feels. I don’t like feeling like your face is greasy and this doesn’t at all. I have been using the tinted one but I might try the non tinted, as sometimes I think its too much with foundation over it, color wise, but I like using it for a tinted moisturizer if I just want to have a light look in the Summer if not going anywhere. The tinted does have a very light coverage. For my body I use Tizo sheer botanicals non tinted SPF 45. Its plant based and a mineral sunscreen. It says on it you can use for face and body but I like the feel of Elta MD on my face better. Tizo can go on at first a little white, but rubs in good. I’m thinking of trying the Supergoop sometime to see the difference and check which is cheaper.

  4. Thank you for the suggestions. I have been wondering what to use every day this summer on my face. Sure dont want any more sun damage!
