Best Sunscreens for Women Over 40

The cold, dreary days of winter are long gone, which means most of us will be spending more time outdoors. Whether you like to spend your time outside gardening, golfing, entertaining friends by the pool, or chasing grandkids at the playground, protecting your skin from the harsh summer sun and harmful UV rays is important. Today, I’m chatting about the best sunscreens for women over 40, including my recommendations for your face, scalp, body, and lips!

Another way that I protect my skin is by skipping the tanning bed in favor of a glowing faux tan. You can read about my favorite self-tanners and how I get a great at-home tan here.

2. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

My assistant loves this invisible, weightless, and scentless sunscreen. She’s used it for about 3 years and hasn’t looked back. It’s the perfect primer for your makeup and doesn’t break you out. Plus, it goes on super smooth and is water and sweat-resistant for 40 minutes. The other one she also recommends is the Glow Screen. She mentioned that she likes the shimmer and tint to this one for the days she isn’t wearing makeup. Although you can layer it under your foundation.

3. Skin Medica Essential Defense

This is one of my favorites! It is a mineral sunscreen that is very lightweight and ideal for anti-aging.

4. Elta MD

So many of you recommended this face sunscreen in my Facebook group! It was designed initially for people with rosacea and acne, and it also comes in a tinted version that dermatologists highly favor. I’m sharing some of your reviews below.

“It soaks in well and gives good coverage while looking dewy.”

“It’s sheer & lightweight also moisturizing, great for sensitive skin.”

Best Sunscreen for Your Body for Women Over 40

I know there are a lot of options out there for sunscreen to use on your body! At the end of the day, the best sunscreen is the one that you will actually use. I’ve included a few favorites below that I use or have heard really good things about. Many of them you can pick up at your local stores like Target or even Whole Foods.

Best Sunscreen for Your Scalp for Women Over 40

One of the spots that I always forget to protect is my scalp. Now, the easiest way to ensure it doesn’t get burned is to wear a baseball hat or sun hat with UPF 50+ in it. But if you prefer to go without a hat for long periods in the sun, I recommend grabbing one of the scalp sunscreens below. The ones that I found supposedly don’t make your scalp greasy. I’m going to give them a try and report back!

Best SPF Lip Balms

Another area I forget that can burn is my lips. There are many lip balms out there that have SPF in them, making it easy to apply. It really comes down to a personal preference of what you like! I’ve included a few of the most popular ones below:

What to Use if You Get a Sunburn

While no one ever plans on getting burnt, it does happen! I like to keep something on hand, just in case. Here are some of the top items out there to help keep your skin moisturized and relieve some of the pain.

Best Sunscreen Tool for Your Grandkids

Now, I know this may not be relevant for everyone, but I had to share. Since we have a pool in our backyard, the grandkids come over and love spending time in it and running around outside. But, that also means that I have to endure the fight of putting sunscreen on them if Courtney isn’t there. If you’ve ever had to do that, you know hard it can be when they are squirming around. I’ve been seeing this sunscreen applicator going around, and I think I’m going to order it to try! All you do is add your own sunscreen lotion into it and then use the refillable roll on sponge applicator to apply. You can even give them one to hold while you use are applying. Genius!

  1. I’m looking forward to trying some of these sunblock options. I also wanted to let you know that I’m having trouble opening up some of the latest Friday Five posts. I don’t see a link and when I click on the post it doesn’t open. I’ve tried on several computers.

Thank you and love your blog!!

  2. I live where the sun shines all year but it’s especially intense in the summer months.I toss any products that sit for more then a year. With 4 grandkids we don’t make sunscreen an option; they know they need to lather up before hitting the pool. I find sprays especially good for that but make sure to apply cream on noses and shoulders. I like Sun Bum products and always keep the Cool Down on hand for a husband who burns quickly.

  3. This was a great post, Cyndi! One of my favorite sunscreens is by Alba Botanica and it has lavender in it . The lavender actually helps propel mosquitoes away from me as well as protect my skin. I would love to hear your opinion on the scalp sunscreen since this is a product I haven’t tried yet but should since I’m not much of a hat wearer.

  4. PS Yes, please report back on the scalp sunscreens. I have short hair and don’t like wearing a hat and then getting flat hat hair, so never wear a hat and should be protecting my scalp. I would also like to hear how you like the sunscreen sponge to apply sunscreen on kids.

  5. You didn’t even list my absolute favor sunscreen for my face!! It is Neutrogena Dry touch 50+. Doesn’t break you out, easy to wear under make-up and wears all day!!! Anti-aging because it protects against UVA & UVB rays!!!

  6. I can attest to the importance of sunscreen. During my 20’s and 30’s I often skipped sunscreen. Now I use it religiously, but the damage is already done. I’ve had a Moh’s surgery for a small basil cell on my nose & another spot under my eye scheduled for next month. Now I’m a huge fan of sunscreen and full body checks at the dermatologist!

  7. I use the Elta MD brand….. the face and the body one. I like how its not greasy or leave a white cast. You can get the face one in tinted or non. I use the tinted one most the time, so in the Summer, I don’t have to wear foundation everyday if just hanging at home.

  8. In the Summer Trader Joe’s has an amazing face sunscreen that sells out really fast. Also a trick I started with my first child is putting aloe vera gel in the refrigerator, then it is so cool and refreshing when applied to sunburns! My kids love it. And for my boys I’ve alwsys been so strict about not forgetting the ears and back of the neck! For that we use a spray sunscreen. Yes the scalp is so important, my dear sister has been battling scalp skin cancer!

  9. As I get older I realize how important sunscreen really is. Unfortunately I didn’t know that in my younger years, so I have sun and age spots on my face. I don’t go out of the house without sunscreen now! I definitely want to try the R & R!!
    Thanks Cyndi!!

  10. Thank you for the great information on sunscreens ❤️ Love the sunscreen with dewy primer in it and especially the sunscreen for acne prone skin ❤️ You are such a beautiful inspiration, Thank You, Lorna Vanderkaay, Prince Edward Island, Canada 🇨🇦

  11. I really appreciate this post. I’m always on the hunt for a better sunscreen.
Question, Does a product exist to protect our colored hair from the sun? Besides a hat? LOL

  12. I’ve tried the R & R but returned to my favorite, tinted Elta MD. Angie is also my source! Thanks for the suggestions for lips.

  13. Wanted to share that my husband has stage 1 melanoma (controlled by a very good dermatologist) and MUST wear sunscreen.
I got him La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 melt-in sunscreen milk SPF60. He loves it. Uses every day. Dermatologist so impresssed she switched from recommending elta to La Roche products.
