While I love camping in our RV, flying on an airplane anywhere, much less internationally, is a whole different ballgame. As I’ve mentioned before, we are heading to Israel and Egypt in the fall, and I’ve started thinking about what I will need to order for the trip. I decided to tap into my assistant, who has traveled abroad quite a bit and is currently in Europe for two months, to pull together a list of what she considers essential to order for your next trip overseas. Even if you are simply heading on a road trip this summer, these items are still worth a look!

I am so glad I read thru all of these comments, they are very helpful. I am going to Israel the first of Sept with my church for 10 days (first time to travel outside the US). I live in Texas and we were told the weather there would be much like our weather here. I am now thinking about looking for a hat to wear so I can pull up my hair into a ponytail. I don’t blow dry my hair, so that’s not an issue, but I do use a straightener and am not sure what to do about that. I also never thought about air tags, so will need to look into that as well. If anyone has any thoughts on the straightener, I welcome them. Great post and great responses.
You mentioned coming to the UP. Wait until July or August when it’s hot. I live in Sault Ste. Marie and I’ve followed you for a few years. I love your style and your posts. I know you and your husband would love camping and exploring here. So many beautiful and interesting sites to see an explore. The Soo Locks, Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point, Pictures Rocks, Lake Superior, hiking, waterfalls, I could go on and on. And that’s just part of the UP. More to see and do on the western side and in the Keeweenaw Peninsula.
I’m so excited you’re going to Israel! I went March of 2022 and it was life changing. It brought the Word to life! It was unusually cold when we were there but you won’t have to worry about that in August, layers are your friend 😉

I went to Israel in Oct-Nov.weather was very warm. Light shirts, walking pants. Shop REI. Comfy walking Sandals , that won’t slip on brick roads if wet. Tennis shoes. Packable rain coat, camping towel that will dry instantly for Dead Sea and Jordan River.pack plenty of tissues to take to restrooms, you never know if there will be toilet paper. And hand sanitizer. No hair dryers need or hair products, hotel normally has this. Just put your hair in a ponytail. 😏take a hat, scarf for shoulders when entering churches. All very casual dress. Leave all your jewelry at home! Travel size lotion, chapstick for lips, plenty of Advil, bandaids for blisters, we had a wonderful time and I wished I was going back. Chargers for phone. Note book for notes. Just a spiritual experience.
Great suggestions. The other thing I find extremely useful is shoe bags for my shoes. I hate having to mix dirty shoes with my clean clothing in a suitcase.
This is a suggestion because I learned the hard way! If possible, check the fine print/owner’s info on the electric appliance you want to bring. I had the correct adapter for Spain and my Chi straightener does fine there. However, my Revlon brush hair dryer was fried. The replacement clearly says “do not use in Europe”. I have NO idea why that is but it happened. My CPAP machine did fine, tho! 🙂
When I went to Israel in October 2020 I did not take enough short sleeve/sleeve less tops. It was very hot.
I wish I had read comments like these before I went to Israel 3 years ago. I went in January with a church group. I took a light coat and I froze a lot. Their weather is like Texas. Sometimes mild and others times really cold in winter. I would check the weather forecast. I didn’t need a blow dryer. The hotels had them. The other mistake I made was putting too much stuff in my carry on. It was hard going through the big airport in Germany.
Travel Insurance! Travel Insurance! Travel Insurance! We went to Europe in 2017, 1 1/2 hours before we landed British Airways whole system went down worldwide! We were stuck at the airport for 8 hours, missed the first day of our 8 day tour, had no luggage for 8 days. Best trip ever, inspite of no luggage! Lol Best purchase was 3 different types of Insurance, and I will NEVER overpack again going to Europe. You really don’t need as much as you think.
Yes we have travel insurance. It’s a must.

Forget the steamer and take Downy wrinkle release Works great. Only take one suitcase and one carryon. Take garments that do not wrinkle that bad. Packing bags are great and hold a lot. Hat,crossbody bag,and 3 pairs of shoes. Tennis,sandals,and dressy pair. I have been flying for sixty years and never take hairdryer. Hotels always have them and voltage converters Ask at front desk. Ditto the comments made already and here are a few of my own. Nix the blanket and hard backpack. Think pashmina & light weight, packable backpack plus a wide brimmed packable hat. Here is where a coordinating, capsule wardrobe is essential. Use scarves to change them up and better yet, buy scarves in the bazaars you will visit! *Most important- cross pack your husband’s clothes and your clothes that way if 1 suitcase gets lost at least you both have outfits in the other. Then rearrange clothes at the hotel. Apple tags are a must these days!

Israel tip—weather can vary greatly in different parts of the country. Cool in the Galilee and very hot & dry in the south. Be prepared for a variety of conditions….even in one day. And of course, comfortable shoes!

Downy Wrinkle Release Spray ! Lifesaver ! Pack a couple of travel size ones and you can leave the steamer home.
I travel a lot and have learned quite a few lessons. You don’t need a blow dryer. Steamer is questionable, too. Two suitcases is overkill. You will not be happy dragging those around. Every piece of clothing should be able to be worn 2 or 3 times, but in different ways. Capsule packing. I second the Apple Air Tag. A hanging toiletry bag is necessary. The combo power adaptors with USB plugs is also a must. You’d be surprised how many hotels still do not have USB plugs.
It’s best to buy a dual voltage hair dryer and a plug adapter. An adapter alone won’t work, you need a converter for heated appliances which are too big and heavy for travel. For your computer and phone all you need is a plug adapter and no need to spend a lot on those. Around $10 for a pack of three. Since I travel a lot to Europe I bought a good hair dryer and a curling iron from a store there a few years back. Best thing I ever did as hair dryers in hotel rooms are usually not that good.
That’s my issue with the hair dryers. I know hotels have them but I’m so picky about the hair dryer I use. We leave on Octer 27th and wont be back until November 10th, That’s a long time using bad hair dryers. 🙁
95% of the dryers are fine. I promise you’ll want that room for something else.
Fully agree! They take so much longer to dry and leave my hair frizzy. I’ve never had a problem fitting a full size one in my suitcase. I travel for work a good bit and have learned to “pack tight”! Packing cubes help with this. I also agree with the shoe bag comment. I always add a scented kitchen garbage bag for dirty clothes so they aren’t touching the clean ones. Those tiny bags in the hotel are never big enough and I don’t plan to do laundry on vacation!
Cyndi, If you would really like to take your own, I would recommend buying a couple of dual voltage hair dryers from Amazon and trying them out to see which you like and works best for your hair. Then you won’t have to worry about burning yours up or buying an expensive converter but can still have one you like and gives you good results.
I have difficult hair (long and very thick). 99% of the time the hotel hairdryers have worked fine for me. We just got back from 3 weeks in Europe and I didn’t pack a hairdryer. I needed the space for other things!
Just be careful with the blow dryer and using an adapter. You would need a voltage converter (and a good one) to use it in Israel (or anywhere in Europe) not just an adapter. Or you would need to buy a dual voltage one otherwise it will start a fire. Same with curling irons from the US. Most hotels have blow dryers so it’s easier to just use theirs.

The best thing I did when I went to Europe is I limited my clothes to three colors. I had black, white, and green. And I brought two scarfs. I was able to interchange and layer my clothes and the scarfs added a little variety.

We went to Israel 3 years ago and it was a spiritual awakening. We look at Christmas, Easter and the scriptures differently now that we’ve seen the actual places. We went in October too. Take a notebook and write down what you learn when you get back on the bus, so you won’t forget. We took the pants that zip at the knee to shorts. As it was hot after we went into the area that we had to cover up. Don’t worry about your hair, it will be pulled up a lot and you will be in a hat all day. The hair dryers were great in the hotels. Take snacks to eat during the day, like peanut butter crackers, or nut packs. I always take medical items overseas like pepto, advil …. things you don’t use everyday but might need. Good walking shoes too. Have a wonderful time!!! Can’t wait to go back.
We went to Europe last summer . Our luggage was lost-thankfully it was on the flight home but we now have Apple Air tags to track our luggage for this years vacation. Wish we had them last year because it took 3 weeks to get our luggage back. 😳

I suggest a belt bag. Lululemon smallest one is $38 and perfect for a day of sightseeing. If getting dressed for upscale dinners, take a small evening bag. I would not take a purse.
Limit yourself to 3 pairs of shoes. Make your wardrobe interchangeable.
