How I Add Volume To My Hair

Well this post is way overdue! For months I have been asked to talk about How I Add Volume To My Hair so I’m finally sharing all my tips and my favorite products.

First, let’s talk about my hair cut. I have fine hair, but I have a lot of  it. My stylist does long, soft layering with a fairly heavy bang but blends them into the top layers. She also uses texturizing shears after the cut to remove bulk.

Fashion & Beauty blogger, Cyndi Spivey, shares how she adds volume to her hair.I did a video on how I use my velcro rollers. I filmed most of it in my upstairs room and the lighting is not great.

I’m going to try and re-do this at some point but it is what it is and you get the idea. Also my phone rings during the video, of course! Oh and when I put my brush down, it’s so loud. Ugh!

I use Kevin Murphy Hair products. Right now I’m using the plumping wash and plumping rinse. I also use the Kevin Murphy Leave in Plumping treatment. To tame my frizziness I use Daviness All in One Milk.

Okay, I think that’s it. I’ll be glad to answer any questions.

I’m so honored that you have taken time out of your day to stop by my blog. If you don’t want to miss a post, you can sign up to receive my daily emails and you’ll never miss a thing. I’m also on FacebookPinterest and my favorite one, Instagram.

Beauty For the Heart~~We spend money on facial serums, brighteners, moisturizers and anti-aging products. We want our face to look it’s best! We want to have a glow that others will notice.

But there’s a glow all of us can have and I’m going to share about it this weekend when I speak at the conference in Georgia.

Psalm 34:5 says, Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

If you want to glow, spend time with Jesus. You will have a glow that others will notice!

Have a blessed day!

  1. Love your cut! My hair is similar in length. Can you tell me about the back and sides? Are they layered and if so how far up?
    Thank you!!

  2. I have extremely thin hair! I let it grow out to its natural shade which is now grey. 😁 My crown of wisdom! I’ve actually had a bald patch the size of my fist twice after illness. (Being in a coma didn’t help!) my hair goes flat immediately after setting with a curling iron, so I’m excited to try this, as I’m leaving for a week back home to the states and my friends always look so great! Thanks! Blessings!

  3. I love your hair and am going to try the Velcro rollers! I am a 75 year old girl but still love make up, hair and staying in style! You are so classic and classy as well! Thank you for sharing all your tips and fashion!

  4. I just watched your video on using Velcro rollers. I loved it!! Could you please do one blow drying your hair? Thanks, Sherri

  5. Hi Cyndi,
Tried to sign up for your daily news letters, but that page has been removed.
    Have a blessed day.
    Joyce

      1. I have thin and fine hair. I am going to try this product and the Velcro rollers, hopefully this will help. Let me know if you have anymore helpful tips.

  6. I love your hair style and you! I kept seeing your picture pop up and thought, man I know this lady….lol. Anyway, not to sound creepy, I believe I sold your house for you several years ago. I really do love what you do with your hair. I have the same cut but without bangs. My stylist keeps talking me out of them. LOL….so I may have to ask which one you use? Thank you for you post and may God bless you!

  7. Thank you for sharing with us. And thank you even more for sharing Jesus with us.I have watched you for a long time now and it’s wonderful to see you share your faith with us. Keep making your videos and I will keep watching!

  8. Hi Cyndi…thank you for sharing this tutorial…you make it look so easy to achieve. I am currently trying to work towards your style; it is very flattering and always looks so nice. I have naturally wavy hair I struggle to embrace so I’m always on a mission to straighten it. Thanks for all the product information. God Bless

  9. Cyndi, I so enjoy learning from you! Thank you for all you do.

I have attempted numerous times to order Monat products. I was determined today, but it continues to reject my username, although I’ve tried different names. I’m surrendering, but I really wanted some of their products. 😢 I find their entire site very difficult.

    1. I just created an account and for my username put my first initial, last name and date of birth. It worked. Maybe try something like that.

  10. i love this video; it inspires me to try velcro curlers. i am sick of damaging my hair with my iron, but i also use it to create volume, so i look forward to trying this!

    thank you!

  11. Hi,

I see you mention you have a lot of hair. I am 46 and have entered perimenopause. Do you know of any products that help thicken hair?

    Thanks!

    1. Have you tried using the fascia blaster on your head? It worked for me…Ashley Black fascia blaster 5 min in shower. (FYI I am not a rep or any association with he

  12. Yes Cyndi, please please please have someone video you actually getting your hair cut. I’m trying to get my stylist to do my bangs like yours and she watched the video, but still didn’t get it. Maybe if she could see your stylist do it, she would understand. I would just make an appt with your stylist, but I live in Texas! LOL thanks so much for all your tips! You are a blessing!

  13. Cyndi,

Thanks for the video! I saw a couple questions about whether you wash your hair every day and if not, how do you refresh your hair? Dry shampoo?

  14. Cindi, would you mind listing the products (hairspray, etc) at the end of your post with a link to the product? It’s hard to see exactly which products you used as you held them up so quickly and didn’t hold them facing the front so we could see each item.

    Thank you!

  15. Greetings from Germany, I am 48years “young” and like, what you share and how you style your clothes too.
I found your site on Pinterest…

    Sincerely,
    Heidi

  16. Cyndi,
Thanks for the update on the hair tutorial with the Velcro rollers. You make it look very easy. You are very inspirational and I look forward to your daily blog. You are a breath of fresh air!

  17. I love your blog Cyndi. It’s always interesting and I especially love the Beauty for the Heart section… I do have a question about the hair tutorial. My hair is like yours – thick but fine. And I have been using the velcro rollers for several years now and I like the effect it has. I was wondering what heat setting you use on your blow-dryer? Thanks so much for helping us girls keep putting our best foot forward!!

  18. Cyndi, I feel like we are kindred spirits 🙂
My husband is a preacher, we are from the south, I love big hair, the latest fashions, and based on your home decor pictures, we have the same taste in home decor. I love your site. It is perfect to keep my in touch with the latest styles as well as encouraging to see we all have the same issues and struggles in life and we are in this life together. Thanks for the scripture and encouragement. Two quick question about you hair. Do you put anything on it while wet before drying like volumizing spray or foam? Also what texturizing most do you like? Many thanks!

  19. Great info, you are so pretty and glowing. I have gone to monat web not very user friendly. not really wanting to sign up for vip just yet, so is it pretty easy to order under you. no one in my area sells it. really wanted some samples etc to try first but customer service said you can’t get them.

    1. Hey Mary I love my monat products, they have a 30 day money back guarantee so its completely risk free, youll love them and theyre super concentrated so they last a while! Vip program is the best bang for your buck!

  20. Thanks for the video, Cyndi! I tried some of your tips this morning and my hair turned out so cute. I got so many compliments. Of course, it rained today! LOL
    Thanks again!

  21. What a great and easy to follow video!!! Don’t change a thing!!! I will be purchasing some velcro rollers today!!!!

  22. What an awesome video tutorial!!!!So nice to actually put a voice to a face. Your hair does always look fabulous, now we know why and how to do ours as well. Thanks so much!

  23. Question: Do you wash your hair every day? And if not, what methods do you do to freshen the style in between? (Re-rolling?) Do you use dry shampoo at all?

  24. Great video! I love my Monat Products, they’re so amazing! It’s done wonders for my curly hair and hair loss! No more clogging up the shower drain!

      1. I love the Let it grow system. But you’ll need a conditioner! My hair is curly and my ends are ombré and need the moisture so I use the leave in conditioner, if your hair is normal to fine I would say the volume which is the revitalize conditioner!

  25. I also love your voice. The tutorial was great-no need to re-do!! I love reading all your posts. Thank you.

  26. Hi Cyndi,
I enjoyed your video, thank you. I remember you were a fan of Aquage foam, are you still using it?

    1. Lindy I love Aquage but since I started using the Monat, I have stuck with it. I do like that they are free of chemicals.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  27. Video is perfect. No need for a redo. Thanks so much for the styling tips. I was curious about the teasing brush. Where did you get it?

  28. Listening to you I felt like I have known you for ever. I can tell you have a kind sprit love your accent. I thought you did agreat job. My hair is thin looking for something new maybe I will try the rollers. Thank you!!!

  29. How do you blow dry your hair – meaning – do you hold your head over and dry it, do you part it before drying or after, do you do anything to your bangs before you dry them – comb them forward, etc.?

    1. I do blow dry my hair with my head turned over. I don’t part it before I blow dry it, I have a natural side part. I blow dry my bangs straight down, kind of like I do with the flat iron.
      Hope that helps!
      Cyndi

  30. You are a beautiful lady. I appreciate you and your blog, especially, “Beauty for the Heart”. Will your talk this weekend be recorded? I’d love to hear it. I’m sure other ladies who follow you would love to hear it too! God blessings to you.

  31. Love your hair it’s so cute!!!
I have used these for years I have baby fine hair that can’t take to much heat these work great! I actually put them in hair spray and heat them with my hair dryer. Works awesome!! Thanks for all your great tips and love your style!!!

  32. I don’t understand…….does just leaving the rollers in for a few minutes style your hair without heat or hair spray?

  33. Hey! Love your blog. Good for the body and great for the soul!!! Do you get the renew shampoo & restore and the tousled texturizing mist from the same company? Praying for your speaking conference this weekend.

  34. Cyndi, Thank you so much for the great tutorial on your hair styling. I agree with everyone else, you did an awesome job! I was surprised about the rollers, I never thought I could get volume just using those, but I am going to try them, since your hair looks so cute all of the time. I so enjoy your blog, so thankful that I found it.

  35. Tina, you’re so right! Cyndi’s voice was not what I expected, but I must admit it was cool to hear her instead of just seeing her. I, too, love all the styling tips and I especially love “Beauty for the Heart”. Cyndi, keep up the good work and I would love to see you come out to the west coast. We love you in Cali!

  36. Your hair always looks great-do you mind sharing the name of your stylist? I live in Lexington and am on the hunt for someone good!!

    1. Hi Darla, Here is where I go to get my hair cut. Genesis Hair Salon 430 W Main St #101, Danville, KY
      (859) 239-0040
      My stylist is Mary Belle.
      Hope that helps!!
      Cyndi

  37. Well I followed your advice on how to look 10 years younger with getting some side bangs…let’s say I probably need more of a fuller bang like your hair.

Thanks for the styling tips on the bangs…I have been learning to work the new bangs the last 2 days.. I am going to try your technique. Maybe mine will look more natural!

Would love to see the haircut in the salon video. Looks like quite a few of us ladies would too!

  38. Very helpful video. I don’t see any need to redo it. 🙂

In the video, it was hard to tell specifically which Tresseme hair spray you used. Would you mind specifying?

  39. WOW!!! We use the same method except I always use the flat iron first. I really need to try to cut that out because I can tell it is damaging my hair but I have a TON of hair and it’s HEAVY so I’m not sure I could get away without it. (but I think I’ll try…thanks for the inspiration) Sally is a great place to find the velcro rollers as well. I’ve been doing my hair like this for as long as I can remember and whenever people happen to see me in all my huge rollers its always good for a laugh!

  40. WOW so much work Cindy!! But it does look great!! My hair is really thick and I have a lot…. so no rollers for me! 🙂

  41. Thank you for the very helpful video. You have great hair. I would love to see a video of your haircut at the salon sometime. I just love watching those on YouTube. Hope you have an awesome day!

  42. Thank you for the video. It was well done and helpful. Could you please list the specific products you use? Please excuse me if you have already covered that. I enjoy your daily posts. Have a great day!

  43. Thanks for your video instructions. I too, use Velcro rollers but never thought of spraying them. I will try this next time..
Do you wash your hair daily? If not, what is your routine between shampoos?
I have a lot of fine hair like you, but mine is naturally platinum and won’t tolerate daily washing. I shampoo every other day. Any suggestion is appreciated for my crazy hair. Love your blog and look forward to your daily offering.

  44. Nice video. No need to re-do it that I can see. Could you specify which Tressomme hairspray you use? Does the hairspray leave your hair with a matte finish?

  45. Thank you for the video and for allowing so many of us to be a part of your life. It is more than outward beauty. Thanks for the inspirational hearings too. I will try the rollers.my hair is thick but about the same length. Thanks again.

  46. Thanks so much for posting the hair video. That really helps a lot. You’re the BEST!!! Love your blog and emails. I read them everyday. Thanks so much. Have an AMAZING day!!!!! 🙂

  47. LOve this – and the video is good IMO. Thanks for sharing, and don’t be too critical – you did this yourself, and that in itself is a feat! You have the BEST hair – thank you for sharing your tips, tricks, and products.

  48. Great video. No need for a redo. I did laugh out loud when you put the brush down. But, had you not mentioned it, I never would have noticed it.

      1. The brush made me laugh out loud as well!
Too funny! Thanks for posting! I might have
To try the products, my hair is fine and straight but I have a
lot of it like you do as well so people always think I have thick hair but I don’t 😁

  49. Hi Cyndi,

I enjoy looking for your post daily. I have often wondered how you did your hair. You have great day and great style. I too was a little surprised by your accent. Sweet!!

    Kim

  50. So sweet of you to make a video for all of us with hair challenges. You are making all your followers so pretty on the inside and out. Blessings to you today…..

  51. Awesome tutorial and as usual you look fabulous! You inspired me to put some bangs/fringe in again but I think I was too hesitant and now they barely show up…I might have to do more hair. Keep up the great inspiration!!!

  52. Hi Cyndi! Have you tried the Voloom volumizing iron? I have fine hair (but a good amount of it) also, and it is the best thing I have found.
Your hair always looks wonderful, by the way! Have a blessed day. 🙂

  53. Great video. Thanks for posting. I use the velcro rollers also but never added spray before taking them out. Will need to try.
    btw, love your southern accent!

  54. Thanks so much for sharing video. You gave me some really great ideas for styling my hair. Have to get some of those Velcro rollers. I worry about heat damage from flat iron too. I already use the Tresemme. Love it. I want to try the shampoo you recommended. Thanks again.

  55. Awesome video! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am also trying not to use too much heat on my hair, so this was perfect.

      1. I’m curious, do you do this everyday? I don’t usually wash my hair everyday and wondered if the second day hair could be rolled as well after using some dry shampoo?

  56. Hi Cyndi! Great video!! This was a lot of help for me as well. I too use the flat iron way too much and want to get away from it so looking forward to trying this. I used to hot-roll my hair a lot a few years back and got pretty good at it. I was impressed with your technique on that. But like that you used plastic rollers instead of heat. Letting it cool or set is the key for sure.
You inspire me every day with your encouraging words and fashion advice.
And you’re an Alto too 🙂
Thanks and have a great day!
    Carole

  57. The video is great…..I don’t think you need to redo. But can you give us a link to that little brush/comb you used for doing a little teasing? I have never seen one.

Thanks again for sharing! Off to get some velcro rollers.

    1. One more question….about how long do you leave the velcro rollers in? I know you said while you do your make up…but wasn’t sure if it was also while you were doing things around the house…eating breakfast, etc. 5-10 minutes? Or longer?

      1. Hey Kim, I leave them in for at least 20 minutes. That is long enough but if I’m doing a few things around the house after I put my makeup on I will leave them in a little longer.
        cyndi

  58. My hair is very similar to yours Cyndi so I’ve been looking forward to seeing how you style yours using Velcro rollers. I normally use a hot styling brush on mine but am going to try the rollers. I agree that it damages the hair and going to give the rollers a try. You make it look pretty easy. Thanks for the tutorial, I always love reading your blog!

  59. Hi Cyndi ! I have been using Velcro rollers for years, really like them. What size are the ones you use ? I have green ones but they look about the same as your pink ones. Maybe 1 1/4 inch. Thanks for all your posts they are so fun and helpful !

  60. Hi, Which Tresemme hair spray do you use ? I like a good/ strong hold that will last all day. I’m sure your like me, fix it, done !! ha Thank’s !!!

  61. Thx Cyndi, I have been thinking of trying these products after my beautician advised me to try. My hair has thinned so much since trouble with thyroid and meds. Hope I have as much success. I too use Velcro rollers even with my short gray hair. Not so damaging. Thx again and God Bless, Belinda

  62. Cyndi,
What texturing mist do you use?
Love your blog! I appreciate that everything is so cute and doesn’t cost a fortune.

  63. Thanks Cyndi for your video tutorial. I’m always trying to figure out how to get the volume on top and also not to overheat my hair!

  64. This video was super helpful. I struggle with my hair all the time. I love big hair also, but I’m constantly trying to make sure my hair doesn’t look too 80’s. I’m also putting Tresseme hairspray on my shopping list. I hope we’ll see more videos like this in the future.
    Aimee

  65. Could you share your speaking schedule? I would love to come hear you if you are ever within driving distance for me.

  66. Could you share your speaking schedule? I would love to come hear you if you are ever within driving distance for me.

  67. Great Job, Cyndi! You are too hard on yourself. I thought you did a great job!!! Thanks for doing this video. I love your blog.

  68. Great video
    Simple and easy to follow
I too have fine hair but a lot of it but mine is wavy/curly
I always flat iron it after blowing it out but I’m going to try the Velcro rollers and see if I can give my poor hair a break from all that damaging heat and get some much needed volume on the top too
Thanks again for the video I know you were kinda dreading it but you did a great job

  69. When I first heard your voice, I was shocked! I knew you were from the south, but I didn’t imagine you with the southern accent you have! I love it! You hair is really pretty, and I use you outfit posts all of the time as inspiration! Keep doing what you’re doing! It’s great!

      1. Hi Cyndi::

Love your blog and all your tips. A few weeks ago you mentioned a devotional book you are reading. Would you mind telling me again what the title of that was? I’ve been looking for a good one for myself. Thanks!
