My Word For the Year

Choosing a word for the year can be a wonderful way to set intentions and focus on an area of your life. We don’t have to have a word for the year, but I like the idea of focusing on one.

As I prayed about my word this year, John 15:4 came to my mind. Remain in me, as I also remain in you (NIV). I also love how the Message version says it: Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you.

My word for the year is ABIDE. The dictionary defines abide as to bear patiently, to endure without yielding.

In scripture, the Greek word for abide is menó, meaning to stay, abide, or remain.

At this season of my life, I want to abide, remain faithful, and finish well. Our world may be getting farther and farther from Jesus, but I will continue to believe and trust that Jesus is everything I need.

Scripture talks a lot about being abiding. Here are a few of those scriptures:

  • And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 1 John 2:28
  • Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. 1 John 3:24
  • If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. John 15:10

Did you pick a word for the year? I would love to know your word!

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on FacebookPinterest, and Instagram.

  1. I start every year with a long fast and usually have a theme for my prayers. I do not choose a word so much as a phrase or thought. Mine this year is to be like the angels and Long, not worry. 1 Pet 2:12

  2. My word for 2024 is “Listen”. I need to listen better to God and the Holy Spirit as well as being a better “listener” to others.

  3. I have a word for the year and it is Get Up. I know that is two words but that is what the Lord gave me from Judges chapter 6. When God was speaking to Gideon, who was making excuses why he couldn’t possibly be a Mighty Man of Valor, God told him “I will be with you now Get Up and go defeat the Midinites. I will give you the victory. Gideon’s excuse was he was the weakest in all of Israel. God wouldn’t have it! This is me making excuses and looking back at. my weaknesses. I can’t loose weight. I can’t get healthy. I can’t make changes. I can’t be disciplined. God told me to Get Up and go in victory. He is with me. This year is going to be a year of Get Up Initiative. I can’t wait to see what God is going to do in my life. Thank you for sharing your word Abide. Jen Wilkin has a wonderful Bible Study on this very topic. You should check it out.

  4. My word for the year is confidence. Confidence is something I lack.
Isaiah 40:31 – Hope In The Lord & He Will Carry You Through.
Isaiah 41:10 – Do Not Fear.

  5. God gave me the word ‘WAIT’ this year. The Greek definition is: Earnestly wait (linger, abide); actively wait with rising intensity and clarity about what is hoped for. The ladies in our women’s ministry ‘Salt & Light’ choose a word every year and we dedicate one session when we return from Christmas break to do a craft with our word and share and discussions about our words. I’m excited to see what God shows me what He wants to do in and through me this year with my word.

  6. Hello Cyndi, I have decided on confidence as my word for the year. I want to have more confidence in myself in everything I do. Just curious who your FWTFL coach is. I recently became a FW coach myself, and wondered if maybe I know your coach by name. 🤗

  7. My word for the year is strength. I am striving to be strong in all aspects of my life, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

  8. I think my word for the year will be “TRUST.” We need to trust the Lord more than ever! The world has gone upside down and I need to trust Him that He will take care of all this craziness!! Have a blessed evening!

  9. My word/s for 2024. Intentional and knowledge. I want to continue to gain knowledge of scripture and be intentional in my daily life, to share my knowledge. The Lord has blessed me over the years and i need to share more often.

  10. My word is satisfied. I pray that I can be satisfied with Jesus and his plans for my life. God is God and I am not.

  11. I have chosen a word each year since 2015. (Those who are interested can check out a guideline at John Gordon.com) This year’s word is “core.” What do I believe? What do I value? Is that obvious to others? Looking forward to another year with a new focus. Thanks for sharing your word!

    Diane

  12. My word for the year is Celebrates. I want to celebrate every thing in each day whether it’s good or bad. I’m celebrating life.

  13. Bless you for the reminder!

    Word study for 2024:
    Wisdom

It was thought provoking on why wisdom. However I’m thoroughly enjoying reviewing the Bible concordance on Wisdom scriptures.

  14. One morning on my walk I asked the Lord about a word for 2024. KIND came to me immediately.
Ephesians 4:31-32 says to “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.”

Our world is in a mess and people are hurting. Jesus is the light of the world and we are to spread His light. I purpose to be KIND to all and channel His love to others… and I trust Jesus to help me do that!

  15. My word is read…I started the Bible Recap on January 1st. It will take me through the entire Bible in a year!

Thank you for your insight and words of encouragement! ❤️

  16. I wasn’t sure what my word of the year would be or if I’d even have one! Some years it’s a word or a song or perhaps a phrase! But after our Sunday message this morning it was clear that God was speaking to my heart and leading me to my word!
The word Ready!!! I want to be ready for the demands (problems )dilemmas and developments( changes) that no doubt will come at me this year! I can be ready to face it if I’m in Gods word and strengthening my faith and walk daily!

  17. I very much like your word choice, “abide” and the scripture that relates to it. I would say my word for the year is persevere. I need to keep moving in a positive direction on the path I am on.

  18. My word for 2024, is “healing”. Sadly there is some estrangement in my family but my husband and I are united in prayer, God is good!

  19. Thank you for the encouragement to pick a word for the year, Cyndi. You’ve chosen a good one. May I ask who your /coach is with FWFL? I have really enjoyed the exercises on this program in the past but didn’t have a strong coach. Would like to consider signing up again.

  20. I love the word Abide🥰 All you have to do is say it, and my mind immediately goes to Jesus❤️

My word is STEADFAST: Hebrew meaning – steadfast means “to be fixed or firm in a direction or purpose – unwavering. The the word for steadfast in the original Hebrew is “chesed” (pronounced kheh’-sed) and it refers to God’s devout loving-kindness, mercy, and faithfulness at the very core of His character and actions.”

    Go Blue!!💙💛

  21. My word for 2024 is progress, to take earnest actions along the continuum resulting in significant results. Mainly health related

  22. My word is also abide. The definition that encouraged me to choose abide is to keep in fellowship with Christ so that his life can work in me and through me to product fruit.

  23. Great post, Cyndi. My word is discernment. It’s going be a challenging year as I navigate ongoing unemployment; what does He want me to focus on for my path forward. For our country, helping me to separate the wheat from the shaft. For my friends in tough situations; that I provide helpful support without judgement.

  24. I don’t pick a word. My prayer is God what verse do you want me to know deep within my heart. I believe this is the verse he’s given me to meditate on. Isaiah 43:19 For I am about to do something new.See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?I will make a pathway through the wilderness.I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

  25. I have chosen FIT. It will translate well into all areas of my life. Physical and mental health, spirituality , relationships, boundaries, the possibilities are endless. I’m excited!

Wishing you ALL the very best to have a year filled with intention! 💛🙏💛🍀😉

  26. I have chosen FIT. It will translate well into all areas of my life. Physical and mental health, spirituality , relationships, boundaries, the possibilities are endless. I’m excited!

Wishing you ALL the very best to have a year filled with intention! 💛🙏💛

  27. I don’t pick words. I heard it on QVC. It seems like a new fad. I do like the word abide. That is what Jesus told us to do. If I had to choose a word it would be obey and it wouldn’t be just for this year but always. God wants our obedience. Love the message.

  28. I have been following you for many years and have never commented but this morning as I opened your blog and saw that you choose a word every year, I thought how wonderful is that. I do that too! So for 2024 my word is ESTABLISH. Psalm 90:17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
And also Job 22:28 28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
I also have a verse that has been my life’s verse and that probably won’t change. Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. I am thankful to have wonderful blogs written by Christian women to follow…and I’m especially thankful that they follow and write about their relationship and daily walk with their LORD. Happy 2024 as you ABIDE.

  29. Build

In all aspects of life, build upon the foundation that is present.

I wasn’t going to do a word this year as nothing was coming to mind. Then during my yoga practice Build popped in and wouldn’t leave. So here we are!
